run together, you can get the voltage for the batteries. if you have excess heat,they are cost effective.but creating heat just to run them,no. like a chimney...

Most likely the bulb contains mercury. It wouldn't be a good idea to shorten the "wire" which is a hollow tube. Instead of shortening it you could coil it...
