Subject: RE: Research as Practice
Dear DP,
Thanks for remembering our discussion and sending information on the new
journal.
The journal looks promising. I even came to think that I would myself
submit a text (or two). For instance, the following unpublished conference
papers might fit to your editorial policy, or how?
1) Räsänen, K. (1998) 'Learning and natural disasters in academic context:
normal re-actions to non-normal conditions?` Paper presented to the 14th
EGOS Colloquium, Theme-Group on "Environmental Issues in Organisations",
Maastricht July 9-11.
This paper suggests provocatively that academics (studying environmental
issues) use the same forms of 'survival learning' as victims of ecolocical
crises or inmates in total institutions (e.g. depersonalization,
conversion, colonization - and resistance).
2)Räsänen, K. (2000) 'Working practices in academic conferences: A
co-convenor's letter to the members of a theme-group'. Paper presented to
the 16th EGOS Colloquium, Theme-Group on "Academics at Work", Helsinki 2-4
July.
This paper describes standard and alternative conference practices, and
draws conclusions as to the way participants in a particular conference
stream could collaborate. The form of the text is not 'standard'(a letter
and series of appendices), and this makes publishing it as an article
difficult.
3) Herbert, A. & Räsänen, K. (2001) Exploring 'switching' practices in the
borderlands of action and research. Paper presented to the 17th EGOS
Colloquium, "The Odyssey of Organizing", Sub Theme 11: Mapping Action
Research Practices, Lyon July 5-7.
The title tells the contents. The paper is perhaps too long (in its current
form) in respect to your limit of 6000 words.
As I have experimented with new styles of writing (i.e. deviating on
purpose from the norms and standards), I have not really pushed the texts
towards publication - assuming that editors are not reaaly interested in
'odd' papers. (However, the third paper is closer to the ordinary forms of
academic writing).
Whatever you think about the topics above, I look forward to reading your
new journal. Our group is studying (various) academic practices (in a
practice studies/theory and AR perspective), and Research as Practice is a
great name for a journal - from our perspective.
Kind regards,
Keijo

Dear Keijo,
Greetings to you! Kindly remember our old interaction, which still appears
on the Web at:
http://www.scu.edu.au/lists/armnet-l/0442.html
Meanwhile, I would like to draw your kind attention to an academic
initiative some of us have launched. It is an academic journal called the
'Journal of Research Practice'. It focuses on how research is actually
carried out in different areas. I think, this perspective is synergetic
with your work. Kindly spare a few minutes to have a look at our Web site.
We will be honoured to be visited by scholars like you.
Sincerely,
DP
