Dear Peter,
Many thanks for your kind offer to assist in finding
more institutional support for JRP. The following
announcement may kindly be used by you for this
purpose.

JOURNAL OF RESEARCH PRACTICE:
Innovations and Challenges in Multiple Domains
Aims and Scope
The Journal of Research Practice (JRP) seeks to
develop our understanding of research as a type of
practice, so as to extend and enhance that practice in
the future. The Journal aims to highlight the dynamics
of research practice, as it unfolds in the life of a
researcher, in the growth and decline of a field, and
in relation to a changing social and institutional
environment. The Journal welcomes deliberation on the
basic issues and challenges encountered by researchers
in any specific domain. The Journal aims to explore
why and how different activities, criteria, methods,
and languages become part of research practice in any
domain. This is expected to trigger inter-disciplinary
dialogue, mutual learning, facilitate research
education, and promote innovations in different
fields.
The Journal's scope is not defined in terms of
academic disciplines. It cuts across disciplines and
fields by drawing out the living dimensions of
research unfolding through history, culture, research
communities, professions, and of course the lives of
individual researchers. The Journal seeks to study the
evolving patterns of thinking and practice that
underlie open inquiry in any domain. The scope also
includes topics such as research training, research
design, research utilisation, research policy, and
innovative forms of research. The Journal targets all
researchers, scholars, research-inclined
professionals, and research students, irrespective of
their disciplinary background. It seeks to attract
reflective articles on the dynamics and challenges of
research practice in context, as well as articles
presenting experiences and learning from research
carried out in an innovative way.
In order to promote wider participation in these
deliberations, JRP will be published electronically in
the open-access mode.

INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT TO THE JOURNAL OF RESEARCH
PRACTICE (JRP)
This is a proposal requesting research-oriented
institutions and scholarly associations around the
world to commit USD 100-1000 per annum, as an annual
support for the free online publication of the Journal
of Research Practice (JRP).
We want this to be a truly global initiative,
providing an online platform for researchers to relate
to each other at the level of thinking and practice
that underlie various academic and professional
disciplines.
JRP is scheduled to be launched in early 2005, as a
scholarly and peer-reviewed publication, following the
spirit of free online scholarship. A publisher of
electronic journals (
http://www.bepress.com) has
agreed to publish it provided we pay a certain amount
of money every year (currently, USD 3500 p.a.) to meet
their costs. We are trying to raise this amount
through institutional tie-ups. The following
institutions have shown interest in supporting the
Journal:
Center for Science in Society, Bryn Mawr College,
Pennsylvania ($1000 for one year, pending some
clarifications)
Nokia Research Center, Beijing ($500 for one year, may
continue)
Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Santiago, Chile
($1000 per annum)
Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar, India
($500 per annum, can go up)
BENEFITS FOR SUPPORTING INSTITUTIONS
(i) Free online publication of the Journal of Research
Practice (JRP).
(ii) We will of course carry the names of all
supporting institutions in the Journal Web site and
other literature. Therefore, the institutions will
enjoy the visibility and the reputation of promoting
an international scholarly journal in the open access
mode.
(iii) The institutions will also be seen as pioneering
an online platform for researchers to relate to each
other at the level of thinking and practice that
underlie all disciplines.
(iv) The institutions will gain a voice in shaping the
future of this initiative. This may be facilitated by
organising global or local academic events, special
issues of the Journal, special features, etc.
(v) Finally, the act of supporting this Journal will
motivate their members, research staff, and students
to participate in a global scholarly medium in which
their institution is a partner.
I will be happy to answer any queries you may have on
this. I look forward to your commitment for an annual
contribution to JRP.
Yours sincerely,
DP

Subject: Re: Journal of Research Practice (JRP)
Dear DP,
My apologies for the delay in replying. I've been
caught up in
holiday visits and the need to finish the January
issue of my newsletter.
I'm glad to hear that Bepress can meet your needs.
Unfortunately I
don't know of other institutions that could help you
pay the Bepress annual
fee. It's possible that if you issue a public
announcement of your
forthcoming launch, and include a brief description of
your willingness to
accommodate more institutional partners, you might
attract the support you
need. If you take this route, I can help you
publicize the announcement.
Happy new year,
Peter
