Perhaps a manufacturing defect? It is not something that
I would easily detect, since that buffer of the Max232 is
not used (i.e. pin 14 is NC.)

microcom is obviously resetting the baud rate, which is not an
unreasonable thing for it to do.

Interesting. I have never gotten /dev/tts/1 to work
on my or Bill's router, just /dev/tts/0. Everytime I
turn on /dev/tts/1, the whole system crashes.
