I recently had a problem with my RL 500. Not sure how similar it is
to the 850, but the mower kept saying Charging Problem when the
charger was not connected to the cradle. The problem was the socket
where the charger cable plugs into the cradle. I took the cradle
apart and replaced the socket (All electronics # DCJ-1 $0.35 @
allelectronics.com) and that solved the problem.

Hope this helps
Terry

This is when recharging via the cradle plug. I had this happen to a
model 800 before and Tyler said I needed a new cradle, which I got
and it worked. Does anyone else know about this? Cause (power hit?)
and if replacing the cradle is the best first step? If so, what is
best source?

Winter is finally here which means most of our Robomowers go into hibernation.
Here are a few tips to keep your mower fresh and ready for spring:
- Charged Battery: Keep the battery charged but not constantly plugged in or it
will burn out. Top off the charge once a month.
- Cleaned: Clean the shell and remove grass from the controller/battery bay.
Remove shell and use compressed air to clean dirt from the motherboard, sensors,
and gears
- Sharpened: Sharpen the blades via do-it-yourself, local mower repair, or buy
new blades
- Horizontal: Don't lean the mower on it's side or it will damage the bumper.
Hooks through the nose will work, but make sure the bumper isn't compressed.
- Fresh: Apply silicone lube to rubber bumper to keep it soft and flexible
- Lubed: Lube the center wheel stock and other points throughout the gear
assembly (suggestion points???)

Any other suggestions?

I'm getting the idea that Friendly Robotics broadcasts simultaneous
"malfunction now" orders wirelessly to the mowers.

I've got the same problem! On the lawn, I put in the batt, and the
battery level starts going up, back to nothing, up again, like it does
when it's charging. Charger's not even hooked up here! Then it says
"Charging Problem". I can't get the mower to start. Tried to remove
the batt and start over numerous times and no luck.

I've never even used the charger, I have the external fast charger.

Are you saying the DC power plug on the hand controller? (cradle is
what the controller sits in so I don't think that's right)

The DC power plug is actually located on the bottom of the cradle the manual
controller sits in. When I had the problem you are describing I
disassembled the wiring node located under the gray cover at the bottom of
the well where the controller, charging connector and all other external
wires come out. Take the cover off remove all the connectors and let it dry
very well. I then reconnected everything and made sure the cover was on
tight. I have not had any issues since then. This was simply a case of
shorting though water buildup. Hope this helps.

Austin Morgan.

P.S. if you have a frayed yellow/orange wire going to the DC charging node
on your cradle you will have to replace the cradle because it will have the
same symptoms and will not go away so easily.

Yeah I see now. I forgot where the charging plug was.

Actually I just fixed it awhile ago. I tried unplugging the cradle's
3-pin connector and got the same charging error. I plugged it in and
unplugged it a few times to clean the connector and bam! works fine.
Actually I played with it a lot before that and that "charging..." error
was unavoidable so it looks like this was definitely the problem.

Did anyone see a video overview of the DARPA urban robot car challenge?

According to the web site Melon won with Stanford in a close second (Stanford
actually won the race but finished 2nd due to traffic violations.) There was a
nice video of the desert race a few years back but I haven't seen anything on
the urban race.

I installed the new cradle today and all works fine again. I noted that the
yellow wire/cable by the charger plug in (black) was VERY frayed. In fact almost
fell off. How it got frayed is beyond me?? Ideas? I placed some duct tape around
it in that area to help protect it so I'll let you know how that works.
And Lord!!! reaching in and down to plug this into 3 wires is crazy! Why
didn't they do a more "friendly" male/female coupler? Once 1 wire gets bent, it
becomes difficult especially if you are far sighted! But for about $15 it is
fixed. I got it from Probotics. also attached are the install instructions in
case anyone needs then

I see they now include a 'Winter' charger with the new 2007 Robo Mowers.
Guess they had too many returns for dead batteries that didn't do well during
storage!

Winter is finally here which means most of our Robomowers go into hibernation.
Here are a few tips to keep your mower fresh and ready for spring:- Charged
Battery: Keep the battery charged but not constantly plugged in or it will burn
out. Top off the charge once a month.- Cleaned: Clean the shell and remove grass
from the controller/battery bay. Remove shell and use compressed air to clean
dirt from the motherboard, sensors, and gears- Sharpened: Sharpen the blades via
do-it-yourself, local mower repair, or buy new blades- Horizontal: Don't lean
the mower on it's side or it will damage the bumper. Hooks through the nose will
work, but make sure the bumper isn't compressed.- Fresh: Apply silicone lube to
rubber bumper to keep it soft and flexible - Lubed: Lube the center wheel stock
and other points throughout the gear assembly (suggestion points???)Any other

I just drove my mower over to the shed for winter storage. I'm going to
plug the batteries into my solar charger once a month till spring to
keep them peaked.

We'll see what happens.

What's so special about this 'Winter' charger?
Is it a stand-alone charger or does it plug into the
RoboMower like the standard charger?
What are the specs?....Charging voltage & current?
A constant trickle charger?
If it's a stand-alone charger, is it a "smart charger".

The Robomower “Winter” Charger is the same as the power supply provided with
an RL-500 through RL-850 for battery charging. It gives RL-1000 users to the
option to charge while out of the dock and connects to the manual controller
cradle. This usually occurs during winter storage, hence the term “winter
charger”.

I hope this clears things up.

Well, lead-acid batteries are supposed to be floated at a lower voltage
than the charging voltage. Also that voltage is really supposed to be
temp compensated.

The problem is the float voltage yields low currents near the end of
charge and it could take a very long time to get the last 15% or so of
charge into a battery. But the normal charging voltage is a problem
because it continues to charge the batt a little bit even when it's 100%
full and this overcharge degrades the batt over weeks or months.

Some good chargers have a float stage built in when they stop charging.
The external fast charger I have has a "charging" LED, and it does of
course stop charging for the most part when the charging cycle is done,
but it does NOT have a float mode to drop the voltage to a float level.

Where can we get a truly SMART charger for our 24 volt batt packs?

Looks like Costco dropped RoboMower – it’s not on their site anymore and
deleted from the FR site, only Costco Canada is left.

RM400 and RM200 are priced at $1,500 and $1,100 or so (from memory)

The new LawnBott L50 seems to be a cool looking machine – like a Batmobile
and a spider crossed.

I am afraid that if L500 has a bigger coverage than RM400 and 200 and/or if
iRobot enters the scene with their mower the days of Robomower maybe
numbered in America.

Well, it has been a good ride :o)

Funny....

http://www.friendlyrobotics.com/videos/robomow/

The video's start out with the yellow RL500 complete with slick wheels. To make
it more compatible with their green line, they simpy photo-shopped the yellow to
green so it has this funny green glow. I hope they get some RM400/RM200 videos
soon.

If anyone buys a RM400/RM200 please give us your feedback.

They do have an affiliate selling them, but Amazon not selling them directly
anymore. I believe recently they sold off battery packs directly from Amazon
for $60-70 or so. I understand there is a shortage of lead that I've read
about, so the prices will go up shortly if not already.

Costco would not pull the product if they were making money with it - either
it was a high fault and return (one or both) or not enough was selling, but
since I take STC would drop ship from their NYC warehouse and Costco would
not stock them it is not the matter of not selling enough. I'd say that the
high return rate is the problem - either people did not like the set up,
complexity of the mower operation and programming, layout of wire, whatever
or they had a high failure rate.

Sam's club still carries 850.

Also, check out the "Forum" photos of the new L50 LawnBott at
http://www.bamabots.com <http://www.bamabots.com/> - the manual drop and go
version will cover 8,000 sq. ft for $1,300 or so. Twice the coverage of the
RM400 and RM200 at minimum if not more. Also, there is no need for a wire
anymore.

I've discovered this link to two videos - the mower is the smaller European
prototype, American photo show it is much bigger. Also, there is no blade in
the demo version, but you can see how it handles different materials -
concrete, mulch. Very neat. http://www.bamabots.com/l50

OMFG that's bad! It's clearly CGI'ed in there which, if I didn't know better,
would have told me that the actual mower isn't going to perform like that and so
they faked the video.

My Robomower came with an installation video which had a really weird
voice-over. Sounded like a male voice had been digitally altered to sound
female? I don't know what was going on there, but it was creepy as hell to
listen to.

That glowing greenish color video of RoboMower has been on their site for a
couple of years. I think we talked about it way back. I did not have a
problem with it, though in serious business it would be considered
misleading advertising.

Actually FR did the same thing when the RL-1000 came out, took a 850 and
"painted" it green. I would not hold that it indicates it will perform
badly, just that they have a cheap advertising department that doesn't so a
very good job.

I'd like to upgrade my Robomower 500B to a C. I recall there is a kit
for this that will replace the tires and the CPU along with something to
take a mower motor out.

Does anyone have pointers on where to get one?

Iggy,
Thanks for posting this.
Any word on compatability with existing Robomower perimeter wire and
transmitter? Any reason to buy this new 'bot if I already have an
RL800?

As you may know, I am an atheist and have been pretty closely involved with
the thriving freethinking community here in Kansas City. We've got quite a
variety of groups and interests - check out http://www.KCFreeThought.org
<http://www.kcfreethought.org/>

If you are a religious or non religious person and are in Kansas City and
would like to participate in a community outreach program, let me know.

I've been calling local churches in Kansas City to see if they'd be
interested to team up with non believers on a community action. Many of our
members do their own community things - Harvesters' food donation, blood
drives, dog shelters, gloves and scarves collection, environmental causes,
literacy programs, etc.

Just got a call back on my voicemail from a church in Kansas City Kansas.
Spoke to a lady there for about 10 minutes about a joint community effort -
it was a great conversation!

On Wednesdays 1-3 p.m. they have a community outreach program with primarily
elementary kids at a community center in KCK. Says there are typically 10-20
kids there, they help them out with homework. They also have Friday
religious activities for them at their church after school, so I did not
talk to her about that.

I talked to her about freethinking activities here in the area and asked her
if they'd be interested to have a couple of computers there - she was
excited about it.

The Wed program maybe on this week after the holidays or will restart next
week again, she said she'll call me and I'll follow up on her tomorrow if I
don't hear from her. She was not sure about Internet connection, so she was
going to check on it.

These are primarily minority elementary school kids and their parents drop
them off at the center after school - African American and Latino, so they
don't have too much and many may not even have computers at home.

I have two Win XP laptops that I can bring, one has wireless wi-fi but the
other one has a problem with the slot, but can be used with Ethernet cable
no problems. I can set up both of them with a second "Guest" account and
password and have kids use that account only so this will keep all my data
intact and since it's automatically backed up anyway, I don't really care.

I also have a Win 98 desktop sitting in my basement but it has a missing
hard drive which I put into another Win XP PC that my kids use, I was
thinking about fixing it as it is a perfectly OK computer - I used to run my
business on it. If someone has a desktop hard drive lying around let me
know, I'll have this Win 98 PC up and running and it will be perfectly good
for kids surfing online, I can install Word, Excel and other programs on it
for them, should not be a problem. I don't have a problem to give it to the
community center but it maybe a bit outdated for them, for activities like
this for a couple of hours it should be OK.

If someone here on this blog is interested to participate and if they have a
laptop or desktop they want to bring and help kids with homework and play or
donate a computer to this effort that maybe older but otherwise still
running let me know.

I am quite good with computers, I can reload Windows if you have a CD that
came with it, update it, install Antivirus and Anti Adware programs I have
and get it going. Kids can type their projects there. I have a couple of
printers I can bring and hook up that are sitting in the basement and not
doing anything.

Call 913-980-4024 or e-mail iggykc@...

Feel free to forward this e-mail to anyone else you know and any other
groups in Kansas City that you know.

Cheers,

IGGY

It seems all the religious bashing scared dealers away. Too bad since they
provided valuable input over the years.

I upgraded my RL500 last year and bought my parts from Steve. He was very
helpful.

Hi Mike,

Re: "What happened to this being a Robomower group?"

That disappeared long ago. There is another group "Robomow" that is a
Robomower group, though it is usually pretty quiet. Of course most of the
noise around here is just noise so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the "Robomow" group not allow any
negative talk about the mower? For a group to be useful to me, it has to allow
frank and open discussion.

I don't know where that rumor came from. It's not an issue so far as I
know, though I personally would hope that complaints would be kept "civil"
as opposed to "rants".

Can you cite where that has been a problem there?

I personally would hope it would be a place to discuss whatever issues there
are, without all the BS, ranting, and off topic discussions.

I'm signed up for a number of product/technology support for a which have
low message traffic, but when there is traffic it actually means something.
It's quite refreshing to have meaningful messages sent to you without being
bombarded with someone's preaching/ranting about this or that.

Even if the other list "allows" ranting I'd hope those folks would just not
apply. THIS is a good place for ranting it seems. No need to take that
anywhere else.
