Is the timer actually slow? Seems like your 2 hour work settings on the
timer end up to be 2:45 in real time? The best way to test it is probably
set up Work Time for 1 hour (doesn't matter which zone) and then test it in
real time and then you'll see for sure where deviation is. The mower has
some electronic component that measures time, if there is a deviation, there
is a problem. However, if its 10-15 minutes difference per hour and it's
consistent, I would adjust the Work time - from 1 hr to 40 min which will be
1 hour in real time. You can have 3-4 zones set up with different timing for
each zone and just adjust it accordingly. But this is only if the difference
is constant all the time. If you notice that it varies with the time, then
there is a problem with the hardware somewhere and you'll need to send it to
the dealer for repairs. I would not personally worry about the clock
differences unless it gets worse or bothers you. I would test it out for the
sake of interest.

Subject: Low Perimeter Switch Battery Beeps

Noticed today that there are two kinds of signals that come up when you have
weak batteries in the perimeter switch - one constantly beeping without
stopping within 0.5 a second of so from each other and also very high
frequency low volume kind of a clacking sound. I think the first one happens
when the batteries are depleted and not allowing the perimeter switch to
property operate but if you replace one battery, this normally takes care of
it. However, the high frequency low volume clicking one is when your
batteries are almost dead and there is just a little life left in them.
Either way, replacing all batteries takes care of that.

is it a pain to send them back. I know when my computer has a
problem and I have to send it back they ship me a box I put it in
the box and it's overnighted to them. Is this the same way with
robomowers because if it is to complicated to send back then I
probably will just live with it like you said earlier

This could of course be done. The flash holding the sounds which I
guess is some kind of simple binary waveform (not MIDI) is located
inside the handcontroler.

By using a "ordinary" flash programmer and a PC you should be able to
read and modify it by the so underestimated "trial and error"
method ;-)

However far more interesting would be if someone could upload a RL800
flash from the mainboard. I would not be surprised if it turns a 500
into a 800...

I've received personal e-mail from FriendlyRobotics contact of mine - he is
curious about this timer problem on he mower and would like to know more. If
you post your future progress on it to the group, I'll forward it to him.
He'll look into it. He was curious to know that something like this may
happen.

UPS will pick it up and ship it for $25 or so ground service - 2-4 days
delivery. Not a big deal.

I'll send this e-mail to Friendly Robotics to find out if "breaking the
code" of 800 and downloading it to 500 would work.

Logically, this should not be a problem if you know what you are doing - I
don't :o) - I am just thinking it's possible.

The hardware must be the same or similar for RL500 and 800 except for the
"learn edge" feature "anti-theft" and the "wide angle mode". The software is
the key, no doubt, but there maybe some other components that handle RL800
and 500 doesn't have? Have no idea. I'll ask.

I got this from FriendlyRobotics this morning.
**********************
The RL800 software is not compatible with the RL500, due changes of
hardware - new main board and more. So if someone attempted downloading an
800 software to the RL500 memory flash, the mower will not work.

FYI,

I sent my RL500 in for repair and they replaced the
board with an RL550 board. I was told that the only
difference in mine, with the new board, and a "real"
RL550 is the motors. Based on that, I would assume at
least the motors are different in the RL800.

I just went through sending mine in for repair. If
you can find a local dealer, I think they will ship it
back at no cost to you. If not, you can take it to
UPS in the box it came in and ship it for around $25.
They will cover the cost to ship it back if it's
covered under warranty.

I looked for the old mower on eBay

I talked to FriendlyRobotics way back about these original mowers - they are according to them are the first entry into the robot mowing market and they did not work very well as they were just beginning development. They had sensor problem, used a sonar !!??? to determine obstacles and often did not work. They called it "a piece of junk" :o)

I think it's a good peace for a collection. I would like to get one working actually and have it running along with the RL500 and 800 - would be fun. The people at FR said they don't service them anymore (they are at least 3-5 years old now) and don't offer any support. I would not spend money on it to buy unless you just want to have it as an non-working piece as part of your collection or if you have a knowledge of how to assemble them, have the needed software, if you have another old one that you can use this one for parts :o)

The condition of this particular one is not the best. He says it's been damaged in shipping and an electronic board too - how does the guy know? - he must have opened it already. I would question where this mower comes from - they have not been making these for a couple of years at least. It doesn't show any signs of wear and tear, so it maybe not used at all. The wheels are broken, the mower must have fallen off a cliff or something :o( - I am not sure if other components are working. However, the wheels have some rub/ dust/ dirt marks? on the flat surfaces - I don't know if they were rolled in the garage or the mower have been already used - hard to tell.

Proceed at your own risk.

Thanks very much for the information and the advise.  I would like to find a used RL500 for the parts and learn more about the circuitry.  Maybe this particular way is not a good route.

Thanks

Unless you have a knowledge of the guts of the mower and want to accomplish something else with it, have computer programming experience, etc, and just want to screw around with it (like some people on this group :o) - go for it.

I for one enjoy just not mowing the lawn :o)

I purchased my RL800 from Amazon two weeks back. For the first week,
I ran the wire for three zones, tested my set up and found the unit
worked flawlessly.

Over the weekend, I began to notice that while charging (standard
slow charger), the unit occasionally complains that the charger is
unplugged and begins the beep warning sequence.

To correct the problem, I simply rotate the connector in the socket
on the back of the control panel. Often, I can just pull on the
charger wire (without lifting the control panel) and it reseats, and
corrects the issue... for a couple of hours. Then the sequence
repeats.

With FR's limited tech support, I am not sure how to simply get
another charger to help me isolate the problem to the charger or the
mower, so I ordered a rapid charger, and hope this resolves my
issue.

FWIW, I also had the perimeter switch die on me, one week after
purchasing, and while in the middle of doing the first pass on my
front lawn. Amazon gives me the choice of returning the whole mover,
but I hate to do that for a bad charger and/or bad perimter switch.

I have another switch on back-order, but until Amaozon ships it, my
neighbors are less than impressed with the streaks in the yard, which
are my early results of the new toy.

Any ideas on the power problem? Also, what are the chances I go
through FR to find the local warranty dealer, and walk out with a
replacement perimeter switch? I am assuming they will want to mail
if off somewhere and get me a replacement by oh, say, end of summer.

Ideas?

I seem to remember another thread in which the owner purchased the
mower from Amazon that had a problem and Amazon replaced the whole
mower. Since you now have two problems, why not ask Anazon to replace
the entire unit. Both problems solved and you can be back on your way
to impressing the neigbors in no time.

I had a similar problem with a new perimeter switch. I took it apart, and it
turned out to be full of water (from a sprinkler). Once I dried it out and
put it back together it came back to life, although then it said the wire
was cut, which I finally traced down to a bad solder joint in the connector.
After I resoldered the joint it worked fine again.

I have a problem with my new RL 800. The housing doesn't sit flat across the drive wheels, to the point that it rubs on the right wheel. Last week the mower quit in the middle of a job, complaining of drive overheating, and I discovered that it was rubbing so badly it had worn a groove in the wheel tread. I tried adjusting the drive wheel height up and down, but it didn't help. Has anyone run into this, or does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I was told that the RL550 is (essentially) a RL800 in a RL500 shell.  Something about availability of parts when they were rolled out.

FYI,

difference in mine, with the new board, and a "real"
RL550 is the motors.  Based on that, I would assume at

I had a similar torsion problem on my RL500.  I removed some of the rubber pins holding the top to the frame and reseated it.  Problem gone.  I'm not sure from your brief description if this would help or not.

It definitly has more efficient software now. It
turns on the wire now instead of doing the "Y" it did
before the board replacement. However, it does not
have the menu options and features that the RL800 has.

What lacking of RL550 vs. RL800 ?
does RL550 have onboard compass ?

I would like to see the Edge Cut travel first right to left then Left

It doesn't have the "wide scan", "learn edge" and
"theft guard" features that the RL800 and RL850 have.
They also replaced the diagnostics menu with a service
menu which is password protected. And I believe all
the FR mowers have compasses.

Hmm...not a bad idea. Though I havent noticed the

I asked this question of FriendlyRobotics some time back - they said it only
goes counter clock wise. No reason was given for not letting it go clock
wise. I'll send this e-mail to FR and will forward you the answer.

As for "ironing" effect of edging, I don't think it's a problem. I have my
mower on the highest cut setting and cannot tell the edging line after the
mower is done mowing front, side or back yard. It blends the edge and the
inside very well.

Another solution maybe to have the wire put closer to the edge (if you don't
have too many obstacles - like flower beds or trees or high curbs) - this
will ensure that your mower when completing the Y inside the perimeter hits
the edge wire closer to the end of your lawn. It will take care of any
inconsistencies that you have.

This is this first time I think I've heard of "ironing" effect. This is
warned against in the old version of the manual RL500, don't know if RL800
has it too. This is normally happening when you have a smaller yard, but run
the mower for a long time and often. The grass is "ironed" then.

A word of caution - watching the robomower mow is addictive :o)

Keep the perimeter switch up, don't lay it down - I think the manual is
specific about it. I had to replace one too due to water damage. I think I
left it laying on the grass and it rained that day.
