Industry data indicate that production peaked in May 2005 and has been slightly declining since then. Consumption continues to increase, and the difference is being made up by drawing down inventories.

The ability of alternative sources of energy to substitute for petroleum and natural gas is seriously disputed by many scientists.

How this future plays out remains to be seen, but energy scarcities could bring economic dislocations, food shortages, fighting over resources, and (literally) billions of human deaths.
