SCOPA members may not have noticed this paragraph at the bottom of
the call I posted Aug 13 about Central Park Village:

Please join us to explore ways that the faculty, staff, and students
at USF might be helpful to the residents who are going through this
process. This situation offers opportunities for both research and
service learning. It also provides a potential site for
volunteerism, especially with tutoring and mentoring. If you want to
be involved, but cannot attend this meeting, or would like further
information about it, please contact Susan Greenbaum
(greenbau@...; 974-0777), Cheryl Rodriguez
(crodrigu@...; 974-4435), or Harold Keller
(hkeller@...; 974-6709).

Dr. Greenbaum says this can be a good opportunity for SCOPA members
to get involved in the helpful ways we have been calling for. Now
let's respond!

Please attend this meeting at USF about Central Park Village!

Greetings again:

I did not realize the CALPO folks were scheduled Friday am. That pretty much requires us to meet for lunch, 12:30-2:30.  But that means our NY rep is tied up and can't attend, and there is also some other activity Fri afternoon.

So, I want to throw out the possibility of meeting for breakfast on Saturday, say 8:30-10:30. We'll have to make one of those two possibilities work.

Let your voice be heard!

cheers,
terry

Seven of us will participate in a session titled: California's Local Practitioner Organizations: Critical Intersections in Applied Anthropology. That said, I would prefer a post-presentation (noon-2) LPO gathering.

Subject: LPO stuff for AAA meeting
Greetings everyone:

It's that time again for me to shake off the dust and get active again. Although I complain about the summer heat, it sure seems to fly by.

In any case I need a quick vote from everyone, as in the next few days, as to whether you would rather hold a 8 to 10 am breakfast type thing, or a noon to 2 p.m. meeting at the AAA meeting in November in San Jose. The date would be Friday, Nov. 17. This will be more than a meet&greet, I hope, and I will work to find us a space where we call all talk and be heard.

I would like to really hear about issues, concerns and problems that LPOs have, and whether we can brainstorm possible solutions, including those that would include NAPA support. For example, I am a member of WAPA and we always have a problem with tracking and maintaining membership lists. Maybe it's time to talk to NAPA again about piggybacking on their website to use their online system...

Of course we should also share success stories; those things you have been doing that gets an enthusiastic response from members, etc.

As we mostly know each other now, we will pass on the usual "state of the LPO" updates. We will introduce two new LPOs from Boston and New York, and it is hoped someone from those two groups will attend, as well as San Francisco, a rep from which has not yet been to one of our gatherings.

NAPA will have a table at the meeting as as usual you are encouraged to develop an organization flyer to hand out. This should be especially useful and important to the CALPO folks; meetings in your back yard should help recruit some new members.

So, let me know about whether you want to meet Friday am or pm. Neither time is great but they are mutually problematic for everyone. Those who submit opinions by next week will hold sway with the final schedule.

Please mention to your membership that we will need to fill time slots at the booth for the three days (one LPO member and one NAPA member at all times, Thurday to Saturday, 9 to 4).

Hope all is well otherwise. Please return to your normally scheduled summer activities.....

cheers,
terry

Not to confuse things, but I was asked a while back to forward this information about the SfAA meeting in Tampa next year. This has nothing to do with AAA or NAPA, it's just an FYI for those members of your groups who are not SfAA members but might want to attend or present.

I have added a file on the subject of planning for a USF Alumni Event
at the forthcoming SfAA meeting in Tampa in March 2007.

One part of that is a session in the program that would focus on
applied anthropology training over the past thirty-some years. Any
SCOPA member who has somethng to say about all this please let it be
known through this SCOPA YahooGroup or get in touch with me now.
Oct 15 is the deadline for SfAA sessions and papers, so we need to do
some pre-discussion and planning -- now!

If I can contribute let me know. I think that it might be helpful to
have representatives of different areas (urban, medical, etc) and years.

Tampa March 2007

I have added a file on the subject of planning for a USF Alumni Event
at the forthcoming SfAA meeting in Tampa in March 2007.

One part of that is a session in the program that would focus on
applied anthropology training over the past thirty-some years. Any
SCOPA member who has somethng to say about all this please let it be
known through this SCOPA YahooGroup or get in touch with me now. Oct 15
is the deadline for SfAA sessions and papers, so we need to do
some pre-discussion and planning -- now!

Would you please consider doing a paper in a session during the SfAA meetings March 30, 2007?

The session abstract will be something like this – depending on your advice and consultation:

PROPOSED DRAFT TITLE OF PROPOSED SESSION AT 2007 SfAA

South Florida’s impact on anthropology and society.

DRAFT ABSTRACT OF SESSION:  The archives of the University of South Florida contains a list of forty-two works descriptive of the MA and PhD programs in applied anthropology published between 1974 and 1994.  At least two hundred graduates of those programs have now been out in the work force at least twenty years, and another hundred have been added to that in the past decade.  It is surely time to consider the impact of those professional practitioners on the discipline of anthropology and on the various professions in and around which they work.  To get the anthropological perspective on that these natives speak for themselves.

Proposed Papers in the Proposed Session:

I will give an introductory overview. Michael Angrosino might give a paper. Michelle Ogilvie and Alayne Unterberger have offered to give papers.

We will have to negotiate quickly, because all SfAA registrations and paper abstracts and the session proposal and abstracts will have to go through us first and then into SfAA, all by October 15.  Your ideas and suggestions are welcomed, but they must be received quickly.

Thanks much for your consideration.

I still think it is a good idea to explore the concept of a roundtable
for this meeting...it would allow more participation, even if it is less
formal. It would be like a large focus group of sorts and I think it
would reflect well on the USF program. From there, John's got a good
point, we could solicit abstract/papers for PA or some other venue.

The other advantage of a roundtable might be that if people are already
committed to sessions, they should still be able to contribute to
roundtables...they don't count the same. In the past, that was the case
but we could check with the program chairs.

Subject: Update on AAA LPO activities

Greetings:

We have received our booth assignment from AAA and it is a pretty small table. If you are bringing materials to the booth, think 'compact.'

That said, the meeting is only 6 weeks away and I hope all of you, especially the folks with new LPOs, will be able to bring some sort of information/membership flyer to pass out at the table.

Towards the end of this month I will start filling in the schedule for staffing the booth, so I hope each of you will be able to recruit a few members to participate for an hour or so. The booth hours will be Thurs to Sat, 9 to 4. We also need instant mentors, so feel free to volunteer or recommend someone. Please pass the word to your members as possible.

There are several scheduling conflicts at this year's meeting, and it looks like Friday (11-17) is the least conflictive overall. CALPO has a session until noon, so I would like to propose that we have a meeting/luncheon from 12:30 to 2 pm. The theme for the meeting will be a needs assessment; that is, what are the greatest needs of your LPO, and how can these be realistically met.

Since time is short we will not do an introduction/overview for each LPO. Most of you know each other now but we will introduce those new LPO members. We also hope that the New York LPO rep will be able to make it for the last minutes, as her workshop is over at 1:30.

It is my understanding that there is a new SfAA LPO liaison coming on board: Bill Roberts, who is the current co-editor of Practicing Anthropology. We hope Bill will be able to strong-arm SfAA in being more helpful with LPO development efforts! As ever you should remember to send your news items to both SfAA and NAPA newsletter coordinators.

At present we are trying to find a quiet venue where we can meet and eat and still hear ourselves. I hope to have this sorted out soon.

So, develop your flyers and find a few folks for the booth, and consult with your members as to your group's greatest needs. I look forward to seeing everyone!

best wishes,
terry

Hi folks:

If someone could take the lead on this for SCOPA and send a reply, that would be great.

Below are a few questions to help me get a sense of what the needs are for each LPO. Your response will help shape the upcoming LPO luncheon/needs assessment agenda. All LPOs are different, of course, so getting a handle on this is tricky; your quick response would really be helpful. I'll be back in touch soon with more details on the lunch, which is currently scheduled for Friday, Nov. 17, from 12:15 to 1:30, in one of the convention center ballrooms.

Please reply to this message, then add your answers to the questions below.
Many thanks,

Hi there,

I am SAM, an Iraqi refugee living in Lebanon at the moment; I have spent the
last 10 years of my life as a refugee registered with the UNHCR in Beirut. The
last 4 years, I have spent as an activist for peace and human rights (especially
refugees and asylum seekers) on the Internet; I'm also books author and ebooks
publisher. I have launched many campaigns to improve our situation as refugees
in Lebanon and hopefully bring more understanding to our problems worldwide. I
helped make many changes and improvements at the UNHCR office in Beirut; I used
the Internet as the field for my activities (you can read more about that in my
free ebook 'MY CAMPAIGNS'). All my ebooks are free and could be download from my
sites.

This is my newest campaign, it's about the illegal and humiliating actions of
the UNHCR, who using photos of refugees as banners and human-buttons to collect
money. This is an abuse of the dignity and humanity of the refugees and must
stop immediately and a clear public apology present by The United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees. My friends, I am talking about the pictures you can
see here:

For more info about UNHCR and life of refugees you can read my free ebooks. I

campaign by reading my article on my site and see the human-buttons. The
campaign is to support and improve the UNHCR http://www.unhcr.ch especially
after the last scandals in the UN and UNHCR, just for example:

The refugees allege that UNHCR staff is selling most of the food items they are
supposed to be supplied.
"They aren't supplying sufficient food to us because they sell most of the food
items," they allege: http://allafrica.com/stories/200503140214.html

Hello Everyone:

I have attached a rough agenda with details on our Friday luncheon. If you do not receive the attachment let me know. As you can see we are on a very tight schedule; this means we'll have to stay on task. The CALPO folks are going to have a busy day...

Also attached is a list of attendees to date. Please review this to ensure accuracy. If no one is listed by your LPO it means I have not received a confirmation for an attendee. Some of you have already alerted me that no one can attend from your group, but if I have missed someone please let me know.

Thanks to those of you who submitted needs assessments. They will be useful for the luncheon. If you have not done so, please consider jotting a few lines relating the state of your organization.

There are probably other items to mention but this should do for now. If you have a special order wish for your lunch sandwich please stop by the booth on Thursday and leave a request. I'll make the lunch run friday morning!

As mentioned in a prior message, we still need booth volunteers, and all LPOs should try to send an information sheet for the booth.

cheers for now, and I look forward to seeing everyone next friday. That's only a week away!

terry

USF Department of Anthropology Second in U.S. in Public Engagement

TAMPA, Fla. (Jan. 18, 2007) – The University of South Florida’s department of anthropology is second in the nation in public engagement, according to a recent ranking by the Hawaii-based Center for Public Anthropology.

The ranking assesses academic departments’ levels of public visibility and engagement, using factors such as citations in public media, collaborative programs involving the community, and the engaged scholarship and outreach of individual faculty members.

The USF department of anthropology is widely recognized for its focus on applied anthropology, and has several active engaged units, including the Alliance for Applied Research in Education and Anthropology, the Center for Applied Anthropology, and the West Central Regional Public Archaeology Center.

“This is an excellent recognition of the department’s national visibility,” said Elizabeth Bird, chairperson of the anthropology department at USF. “It is especially gratifying that this came just as USF is being recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as an Engaged Institution; we certainly believe we have contributed to this in a significant way.”

Bird and fellow anthropology department faculty member Susan Greenbaum were listed with more than 50 citations in the public media, as determined by a LexisNexis search.

Among the programs that led to the USF anthropology department’s high ranking:

• The Alliance for Applied Research in Anthropology and Education (AAREA), a research group led by Kathy Borman, one of USF’s “Million Dollar Researchers.” AAREA coordinates several major grants (NSF, DOE etc) that conduct research in schools and universities looking at the effectiveness of educational reforms and programs

• The West Central Regional Public Archaeology Center, part of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Funded by state funds through the department, and housed at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, the center (and the network’s) goal is to increase public awareness and education about archaeology. Another goal of Public Archaeology is the preservation of fragile prehistoric and historic sites past that are being destroyed at an alarming rate through natural process and development.

• The annual Field School in Costa Rica: Globalization and Health, led by Nancy Romero-Daza and David Himmelgreen, which trains students in applied research methods; students then carry out original research on topics designed by community members, such as HIV/AIDS prevention and nutritional issues, and present results to the community.

• Multiple faculty applied projects, partnering USF faculty and students with communities in the U.S. and abroad.

• Multiple public outreach activities, including the USF anthropology department’s series of radio programs in 2006  year with WMNF Radio, our workshop for public school teachers on Teaching Evolution, or work being done to provide forensic training to law enforcement personnel.

The ranking included 394 schools, with Michigan State University at the top, followed in the Top 10 by USF; University of Pennsylvania; Arizona State University; University of California, Berkeley; Emory University; University of Arizona; University of California, Irvine; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Boston University; and University of Washington.

The assessment was done through a survey of anthropology faculty members throughout the United States, with a response rate of over 40%; a total of 394 schools were included in the assessment.

The University of South Florida is one of the nation’s top 63 public research universities as designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. USF received more than $310 million in research contracts and grants in 2005,  and it is ranked by the National Science Foundation as one of two of the nation’s fastest growing universities in terms of federal research and development expenditures.  The university has a $1.6 billion annual budget and serves 44,038 students on campuses in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota/Manatee and Lakeland. USF is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference.

First, I’m working on the SfAA newsletter LPO column.  I have quite a bit from our meeting in San Jose to put in there, and will also add info about WAPA’s 30th anniversary celebration in December.  But, if you have other news that you’d like me to include, please let me know.  I will use the column to convey a number of the issues raised at the AAA meeting, such as sharing info about SfAA members in LPO areas, with the rest of the SfAA membership and leadership.  BAAPA folks, just be patient with me a little longer and I hope you’ll have some info about SfAA members in your area.

Secondly, please don’t forget that Practicing Anthropology would like to publish Practitioner Briefs (500 words) in PA to highlight the work of practitioners and LPOs.  Please pass this along to your members.

Also, I will continue the tradition of bringing all of the LPO leaders together in Tampa with the NAPA rep for lunch or some other occasion to talk about issues/concerns of mutual interest.  Since this is my first time organizing this, I’d appreciate any suggestions about time or place.  It doesn’t seem to be in the preliminary program, but I’ll get that taken care of.

Will you please let me know: 1) Are you coming to Tampa? And, 2) Would Thursday or Saturday afternoon (lunch time) work better for you to get together?

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Bill

Subject: NAPA Call for AAA Annual meeting papers

Dear Glenn Brown,

The 2007 annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association is to be
held in Washington, DC (November 28-December 2, 2007). The theme of this
year's meeting is "Difference, (In)equality, & Justice." The full
description of this theme is posted on AAA website (http://www.aaanet.org/).
The submission deadline for panels, papers, and posters is March 30th at 5
pm EST.

We encourage NAPA members to submit panels to be considered for Invited
Sessions. If you would like your panel to be considered for Invited Session
status by NAPA, you need to submit your proposals to me at
kagillogly@... by Friday, March 2, 2007. Please include the
following materials: the panel abstract, list of participants and their
roles, and abstracts from each presenter who will be giving a paper.

The specific topics that fit within these frames will depend on the
interests of our membership. We strongly encourage the NAPA membership to
submit panels to be considered for this Invited Session on the topics of
cultural diversity. I believe that NAPA members have unique approaches to
these issues through our practice. We have much to contribute!

The NAPA Program Committee will make selections for Invited Session status
on the basis of the strength of the papers and the relevance of the panel to
the overall theme of the meeting. Note: This only applies to Invited Session
proposals; all other paper and panel proposals should be submitted to the
AAA alone.

The AAA Committee on Minority Issues in Anthropology has invited NAPA to
create invited sessions in concert with them on issues of cultural
diversity. These sessions will be joined with CMIA's invited sessions to
create a total of two double sessions. The first of their interests is a
session that frames U.S. cultural diversity issues for decision makers and
opinion makers, facilitating public discourse about cultural diversity. The
second is a session 2) A session that focuses on generating materials on
cultural diversity for use in institutional development in colleges and
universities. Please contact Michael Winkelman, Chair of the CMIA, if you
are interested in being part of these sessions: michael.winkelman@...

Here's a list of topics of possible of interest for the NAPA/CMIA double
session:

No Child Left Behind and its effects on minority students

Diversity consulting in education

Health care issues (cultural competence training, lack of funding for
public/community health that affects marginalized minority populations)

Using current anthropological concepts of race in applied contexts (since
general cultural ideas about race differ from the anthropological
understanding of race)

How we frame diversity issues for policy and opinion makers

Environmental justice in applied anthropology

Diversity in terms of who we are as anthropologists -- how ethnicity of the
anthropologist and the target population affects communication and
assessments of the legitimacy of our findings.

How anthropologists from minority groups address issues of their perceived
legitimacy as anthropologists and members of marginalized communities.

Glen,

Would you mind sending the following message to the SCOPA membership through your list or message board?

Dear SCOPA membership,

I will be organizing a booth to promote NAPA and LPOs at the SfAA meeting next week in the book display room.  The booth will be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am-4pm.  This has historically been a great opportunity for local LPO’s to show support at the national level as well as expanding their numbers locally.  I would greatly appreciate your participation in volunteering for an hour or two during the meetings at our table.

Please respond directly to me (jmullooly@...) with your available times anytime from Thursday through Saturday between 9am-4pm.

Gratefully,

-Jim (Chair, Communication Committee, NAPA)

Dear Al and Glen,

Terry suggested that I contact you directly since you live in Tampa.  We need volunteers for the NAPA table and you both know many folks locally.  This could be a good opportunity for SCOPA to show their stuff.  Last year, BAAPA made a big showing at the AAA meetings in San Jose

Additionally, I would appreciate it if you pass this around student circles.  Hanging out at the table is a good way to meet professional anthropologists and get mentored.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I will be organizing our table/booth at the SfAA meeting this year as the new Chair of the Communications Committee.

I’m forwarding the following sign up sheet to give you an idea of our needs.  We will have a table on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for 9am-4pm.  I provided a column for LPOs as well though I imagine these duties will be shared.

Please respond directly to me (jmullooly@...) with your available times.

Hi everyone! This email is FYI and a volunteer request.

Most of you probably don't remember this far back, but when I was more
involved with SCOPA, we cosponsored the SfAA meetings in San Juan Puerto
Rico in 1998. I was on the planning committee and SCOPA contributed
about 5 sessions. It was great. Along those lines, we also had a table
and recruited members, since we were the closest LPO (Local Practitioner
Organization) to the Meetings that year.

NAPA is the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology, a
section under the AAA. It is the "applied/practicing" arm of AAA. I was
on the NAPA board as the Student Representative from the University of
Florida.

I remain active with both NAPA and SfAA. That being said, there is a
NAPA Student Professional Social (free beer, wine, cheese) on Wednesday
night and I have "personned" the LPO table before so if you want me to,
I am happy to sit there for a shift. NAPA lets LPOs like SCOPA promote
ourselves this way. Does anyone else want to volunteer a shift with me?
We need flyers, a schedule of SCOPA meetings and those famous keychains,
if Al still has them!!!!

I have a little stand-up SCOPA poster that should stand on the SCOPA table.  I have quite a few SCOPA archives inherited from earlier, but younger, SCOPA officers, especially Jini Hanjian who has now moved out of the area (unless Gainesville is close enough to be “Sun Coast”!

As Ellen says, “This would be a great opportunity to increase membership, since the conference is right here.”

In addition, there is a big USF Applied Anthropology Alumni Reception and Dinner Friday evening March 30.  We should sell some SCOPA memberships there as well.
