I have attached two articles that may be of interest to the group (in tiff format so any software you use to look at scanned images should be able to open the files). One is from the February 4, 2004 Community Development Digest, published by cdpublications in MD; the other is from the Feb. 27th Florida Sentinel Bulletin.

Subject: NAPA LPO update
Hello folks:
This message is going to both Local Practitioner Organization (LPO)
leaders and also those who have expressed an interest at some point in
developing an LPO or in being a resource person. Feel free to pass it
along if needed.
With that disclaimer, I would like to update you on what is going on at
NAPA in terms of LPO issues.
For those of you interested in developing an LPO, NAPA is finalizing a
resource kit which will contain the following:
A development guide
An MS Access membership database, ready for data input A website
template to get you connected to cyberspace
If you are interested in any of all of these please let me know. Once
the resource kit is complete I'll be sending out a more thorough
description. Also, for those existing LPOs that need technical
assistance in getting a website up and running, be in touch and we can
go through the steps.
Speaking of websites, the NAPA website (www.practicinganthropology.org),
will soon update the LPO section. Information and updates will be posted
there periodically to make it a more useful resource to LPO members. You
should see the updates within the next several weeks.
A planning ahead note: the annual NAPA LPO luncheon at the AAA meeting
in San Francisco is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18, from
12:15 to 1:30 p.m., at the conference hotel. The format will be a bit
different this year: two members from each LPO are invited to attend. In
addition, those interested in starting an LPO in their local areas will
be invited. LPO veterans will be asked to share their insights and ideas
with other developing and potential LPOs. More on the luncheon will
follow, but please make a note now on your calendars!
AAA newsletter note: NAPA Secretary Mari Clarke has graciously offered
two items of interest for LPOs in the NAPA column of the Anthropology
News published by the AAA:
First, LPOs should submit any items of interest to Mari for publication
in the NAPA column. These newsworthy items would include awards, special
events and activities, membership issues, etc. In addition, Mari and I
have been discussing publishing periodic profiles of LPOs in the
newsletter. This will give each LPO a chance to share with others who
they are and what they do. This will be something for the future, but
LPOs should begin now to think about assigning a contact person who will
take the lead on developing their profile. More news will be coming on
this in due course. In the meantime, send your news items and updates
for the Anthropology Newsletter to Mari Clarke at
mariclarke@....
SfAA meeting notes: As you may already know, the SfAA annual LPO
luncheon will be held on Friday, April 2 in the Pyramid Grill,
lobby-level of the Fairmont Hotel. Reservations have been made for
11:45 a.m. in Carla Littlefield's name. Even if you are not going to
Dallas, please designate a member of your LPO who will be there as a
representative. Please forward the name of the person who will represent
your LPO at the luncheon to Leni Bohren at bohren@....
Also, the AAA-SfAA Consortium will have a booth at the meeting and LPOs
are invited to participate. The booth will be open Thursday, Friday and
Saturday. LPOs should drop off information sheets and other materials
for the booth. In addition, there are a few volunteer staff slots open
for the booth. Volunteers should contact Linda Bennett at
lbennett@... as soon as possible.
Thanks for reading; updates on some of the abovementioned items will
follow in due course. In the meantime please let me know if I can be of
help in your ongoing LPO activities.
Cheers for now,
Terry Redding
NAPA LPO Liaison

SCOPA group:
Would an official web site be helpful

o Hey, an official web site could help and I like the idea.
o But in pursuit of those far mysteries we dream of, or in tormented chase of
the demon phantom that, some time or other, swims before all human hearts; while
chasing such over this round globe, they either lead us on in barren mazes or
midway leave us whelmed. -- Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Hello folks,
I recently received a message from Terry Redding, the NAPA LPO
Liaison, who asked if we would like assistance putting together an
official NAPA SCOPA website. His thoughts were:
"...How about a regular web site? This makes it a lot easier for
others to find you, and even for members on occasion. I can help with
that end of things. It does not have to be anything complicated, just
a couple pages with info, membership stuff and contact information.
It would give you more flexibility than the yahoo group page.
Actually, the web site and group page would really work well
together."
If people have enough interest, I would be happy to work with Terry
on this. Please post your thoughts.
Regards,
Glenn
I don't care what Yahoo says. They have never gotten me as a member no matter how many times I've tried to register. Now they are telling me that I'm not a SCOPA member. That is one reason I vote for our own website. Yahoo is way too frustrating for me to care about.
Well, Scopa actually had a website, under my account at USF and it was inactive
for years...I don't think it helped. Check out NAPA's new website

I still own appliedanthro.org

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Invites Proposals for
Active Living Research Program
Deadline: September 1, 2004 (Cycle Two)
Active Living Research (formerly Active Living Policy and
Environmental Studies), a $12.5 million program of the
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, was created to stimulate
and support research that identifies environmental factors
and policies that influence physical activity. Findings
are expected to inform environmental and policy changes
that will promote active living among Americans.
The program seeks proposals that describe research
designed to improve understanding of the environmental
and policy correlates of physical activity in one or more
of the following population subgroups: children and
adolescents; low-income and ethnic minority groups; older
adults; people with physical challenges; and residents of
rural areas.
Proposals must address one of the following topics:
environmental characteristics and physical activity in
under-studied populations; or the impact of changes in
community environments or policies on physical activity.
Proposals for cycle two funding may request up to $150,000
over two years, and Applicants may apply as a new
investigator for this round of funding. In addition, funds
are available for Dissertation Awards.
Preference will be given to applicants who are either
public entities or nonprofit organizations that are tax-
exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue
Code.
All proposals other than those requesting dissertation
funding must be submitted through the RWJF Grantmaking

DEADLINES APPROACHING!!!
Register now to receive the early bird registration rate of $150.00 for the Alliance for Regional Stewardship’s (ARS) National Forum on Regional Stewardship. The agenda and online registration are available at: http://www.regionalstewardship.org/register4forum.html. Register by April 28th to receive the special rate! After April 28th, the rate increases to $225.00!!!
Book your hotel BEFORE April 28th to receive the conference rate. Mention the Alliance for Regional Stewardship to receive the group lodging rate of $155.00/single or double (not including taxes). Contact the Driskill Hotel at (512) 474-5911 or 1-800-252-9367.
Program Description
ARS advocates for the involvement of all sectors in regional problem solving. In this spirit, the next National Forum on Regional Stewardship will address the theme, “Propelling the Regional Agenda: The Role of CEOs,” to spotlight the critical contribution of business leadership at the highest levels in strengthening metropolitan communities. The program will feature corporate CEOs from Austin, San Antonio and across the United States, who will discuss how they have worked to help secure the future of their regions through initiatives to attract and nurture a competitive workforce while promoting livability and mobility.
Forum Objectives
A primary goal of this forum is to arrive at strategies for fostering relationships between CEOs and other regional leaders by increasing the understanding of how CEOs cultivate regional stewardship. With this goal in mind, ARS encourages regions to bring “teams” to this Forum – teams that include CEOs as well as individuals who are involved in the day-to-day process of regional initiatives. By bringing both CEOs and other community members to the table, participants will learn Best Practices and Lessons Learned surrounding how regions are involving local CEOs, and how CEOs are initiating regional efforts.
The National Forums on Regional Stewardship are specifically designed to offer participants the chance to interact with one another. We have deliberately set aside time in the agenda for that purpose. Participants are asked to identify topics of interest for the Thursday evening cluster dinners as well as the Friday morning peer-to-peer sessions when they register. If any individual is interested in leading a cluster dinner or peer-to-peer session, please include that information when registering.
You received this email because your name is on the Alliance for Regional Stewardship electronic newsletter list. If you no longer wish to receive this newsletter from us, please click here. We are sorry for any inconvenience this email has caused you.

I received the information regarding proposals for the Active Living Research Program. It sounds really good.
The grant research and my own interests correlate in the following areas; low-income and ethnic minority groups, older adults, and people with physical challenges.
Obviously, we can examine "the impact of changes in community environments...on physical activity" from a network perspective. That sounds like a home run for us.
I do wonder if any of the interested SCOPA members are affiliated with a tax exempt 501(c)3 as this would seem to give us an edge in receiving grant money.
In any event, I would be interested in being a research partner if the grant money came through. Also, if you need additional assistance in filling out the grant application paper work (for scholarly support etc.), I would be pleased to participate.
FICS is interested, but I can't be PI on much more! my plate is
full. Let's all talk on email...we are a 501c3 and we have an
established IRB

This editorial is a real good indicator that the Tampa Tribune has an
ulterior motive in their coverage of the ongoing Central Park Village
situation. I think most dispassionate observers would acknowledge that
Gatewood has more than a passing relationship with the Civitas project.
The suggestion that four county commissioners are somehow negligent because
they haven't promoted their own plan for developing Central Park Village is
beside the point. The commissioners are the voice of the people and their
primary mission is to approve or disapprove of plans that are proposed to
them by activist citizens, the city government, and the County
Administrator. If they aren't comfortable with the suggestions posed by the
Civitas group or the city, they need to say no, and that seems to be what
they've done.
The Central Park Village situation is a real subject for concern for
residents of the Bay Area.

I'm willing to help. I assisted a group in the University Area with
this last year (the original idea was geared toward trying to reduce
pedestrian fatalites...). Unfortunately the project never really
got well enough defined and, although there were very relevant and
potentially significant partners, there were was a lack of energy
around project (only about three of the partners took initiative on
things...anyway, lots of good intentions). I can dig up our
submission. Let me know what you want to do.

Sounds from here that we will need more than the two of us to apply for the grant. How about Susan Greenbaum or Cheryl Rodriquez or other SCOPA members. Likely, neither of us have time for unrewarded good intentions. We will need the support of some nonprofit institution and people willing to get into the neighborhood to get their fingernails dirty.
If you could get the lay of the land over there in Tampa, I'd appreciate it. I would be available for more Ybor City meetings and I would certainly participate in the on the ground and background research. I live about an hour away from Central Park though here in SW Orlando.
I would suggest that you really read the RWJ RFA to figure out who should
be involved. I'll be at the CBHC today, Glenn @ our Proyecto
Prevencion meeting if you want to chat briefly.

I have to go to the Child Abuse Council (I have a contract with them) so I will miss todays FICS meeting despite having actually gotten it onto my calendar today (I'm sorry Alayne! I actually thought I was going to make it there this time.) But we are Ybor neighbors and perhaps could make a more concerted effort to meet if there is serious interest in this project.
Ron,
Alayne's offer to work under her umbrella is pretty nice and unless I am misunderstanding her, she is simply saying she couldn't be the PI but is offering to provide the 501 (c) 3 structure to run a good community project through. I know Susan and Cheryl both have pretty full plates (really, I had lunch with them just the other day at a soul food restaurant in the Springs and the plates were filled ...) but I sure they would also provide some support if there is a well designed project (I would guess Alvin would probably be kind enough to help in some way as well, but I'll let him speak for himself).
It does seem that there could be some natural connection to an Active Living Grant and all this Civitas Stuff (and perhaps that is where Susan and Cheryl would have some interest -- they have some excellent relationships with some of the residents and Susan has been contacted by some of the City staff) but I am not floating in the circles of influence in regard to what is happening with that project.
I guess we should all do a little more talking and consider meeting. Certainly we probably should take a closer look at the RWJ RFP.
There is my 3 cents.

Glenn

Deadline: May 19, 2004
Applications are invited for Federal Save America's Treasures Grants, a program administered by the National Park Service (
http://www.nps.gov/ ) in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
Grants are awarded through a competitive process for preservation and/or conservation work on nationally significant intellectual and cultural artifacts and collections and on nationally significant historic properties. Intellectual and cultural artifacts and collections include artifacts, collections, documents, sculpture, and other works of art. Historic properties include historic districts, buildings, sites, structures, and objects.
Grants require a dollar-for-dollar, non-federal match of cash, donated services, or use of equipment. The grant and the non-federal match must be expended during the grant period (generally two to three years). The minimum grant request for collections projects is $50,000 (federal share), while the minimum for historic property projects is $250,000 (federal share). The maximum grant request for all projects is $1 million (federal share).
Eligible applicants include federal agencies funded by the Department of the Interior and the Related Agencies Appropriations Act; other federal agencies collaborating with a nonprofit partner to preserve the historic properties or collections owned by the federal agency; nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c) organizations; units of state or local government; and federally recognized Indian tribes. Historic properties and collections associated with active religious organizations are also eligible to apply.
See the National Park Service Web site for eligibility information, application instructions, and an application form.
