This Friday, 11/6, we are hosting a consultant visit by Jean (Jay) Schensul of ICR in Hartford and Diane Austin of BARA at U of Arizona.  They will be consulting about the Center for Applied Anthropology.  You are all welcome to come and meet with them at either 2PM or 3:30.  We will gather in SOC 37.

Your input as practicing anthropologists who are familiar with local agencies and issues would be extremely valuable in this discussion.  We are hoping to build CAA into a platform for more coordinated and effective applied anthropology here in the Tampa Bay region and beyond.

Subject: A new tool for understanding "The Poverty Paradox"

To all --

I have just completed a minor project some on this list might find of interest.

For many years now, I have been teaching political economy based on the analysis provided by Henry George in his works. When Henry George wrote, he took for granted that most of his targeted audience would have some familiarity with history and the writings of his contemporaries and predecessors. Whether this was the case regarding the reading audience during the late 19th century, it is certainly not the case today.

To overcome this shortcoming, I have tried to put together a cohesive story of how societies settled, organized and lost their communitarian (i.e., community-oriented) structure and became dominated by hierarchies. A study of history reveals very clearly that with hierarchy societies experience the permanent presence of poverty.

Although there have always been individuals who fought for justice in their societies, a critical mass of momentum for change was reached during the late 19th century, but with very mixed results, leaving us today with a world where for at least one-fifth of the population there is little or no hope of rising out of poverty.

This is the story I have tried to tell. The Powerpoint can be viewed and listened to at www.authorstream.com.

From the www.authorstream.com home page, there is a button when you scroll down that says "browse". Hit that button, then put "Henry George" in the search bar that shows up. Only my two powerpoints show up. Dougle-click on the small image and the Powerpoint opens up. Click on the arrow at the center, then start the presentation by hitting the down arrow on your keyboard.

That should get it started on its own and it will continue. For some reason the narration on slides 11 and 12 do not play, but after that its plays fine.

Any comments or reactions will be welcomed and appreciated.

We have come through yet another very difficult year, and the prospect for resolving (or even mitigating) any of our major challenges seems remote. But, as the saying goes, unless we develop a sound understanding of the past, we are doomed to repeat our mistakes.

Thank you all for your sleeping bag response.  Here is the information I have just received.

The drop off point is:

1870 Drew Street

Clearwater, FL  33765

727-443-0600

Gaybee Suarez (not sure of spelling of first name)

While they would prefer new sleeping bags, used bags that are clean and odorless will be accepted.  If they are not clean and odorless, they will be disposed of if dropped off, just so you know.

While they would like to receive these prior to noon tomorrow, they realize this is very short notice.  Having said that, they have another flight leaving in a few days and will accept sleeping bags beyond the noon deadline tomorrow.

Also, while requesting 200, they are happy to accept well over that amount to share with other organizations on the ground.

Thank you all for your prompt response and willingness to help.  I apologize for my late reply, but I was waiting for all of the above information.

Hillsborough County Wants to Know What Service You Would Reduce

Hillsborough County has added a new blog question to get online feedback on the County services residents think should be reduced. There is also a Matrix of Services that easily outlines the County services currently offered.

During the budget public hearings last year, County residents showed up in mass to voice their opinions. This year, County residents are just one click away from letting their voices be heard.

The blog link is - http://hillsboroughfl.blogspot.com/

To find out details on the FY 11 budget, go to the County's Web page (www.hillsboroughcounty.org) and click the megaphone graphic to go straight to all things budget. Residents will even be able to watch the budget hearings and workshops live or prior meetings on demand.

All public comments, no matter through which form, will be sent to County management and budget staff and County Commissioners for consideration in developing the recommended budget. This recommended budget will be delivered to the County Commissioners from the County Administrator on June 3.

After that time, County Commissioners will discuss efficiencies and possible reductions until the September 23 Budget Public Hearing when the final FY 11 Budget will be adopted.

Hillsborough County is offering multiple social media opportunities for residents to be more engaged in the discussions concerning their county government:

become a Fan of Hillsborough County on Facebook (www.facebook.com/HillsboroughFL/);
become a Follower on Twitter (http://twitter.com/HillsboroughFL);
join the discussion on Blog posts (http://hillsboroughfl.blogspot.com/);
email (hcbudget@... );
and voicemail or text message budget concerns to 813-704-0181.

Hello Debbie and Al,

I hope this email finds you doing well.

We’ve positions open for two post-doctoral fellows here at the ICHS. Although it seems a stretch, I wonder if you would consider posting this opportunity around the department?

The Institute for Circumpolar Health Studies (ICHS) at the University of

Alaska Anchorage seeks to improve the health of the residents of Alaska

and the circumpolar north by understanding and addressing the factors

that affect health and inform policy in our region. The ICHS is seeking

two scholars who have completed their doctoral training to engage in an

intensive two-year postdoctoral training program at the University of

Alaska Anchorage. The program will consist of two years of intensive

scholar-directed research conducted in collaboration with distinguished

faculty mentors at the University of Alaska, and focused on health

issues of particular relevance for Alaskan residents. The training

curriculum will foster cross-disciplinary thinking and dialogue, as

scholars and faculty from different disciplines at the University of

Alaska assess and respond to the variety of contextual forces shaping

population health in Alaska and the circumpolar north.

Candidates must have completed their doctoral training (including the

award of their doctoral degree or letter of completion from their

registrar's office) by the time of entry into the program (May or June

2010) in one of a variety of fields including, but not limited to:

behavioral and social sciences, biological and natural sciences, public

policy, and public health. Past training in health-related areas is not

a requirement, but applicants must clearly connect their postdoctoral

research interests to substantive circumpolar health concerns.

Applicants should welcome the challenge of conducting research in

Alaska. Publication experience, professional meeting presentations, and

seminar or classroom teaching experience are preferred. ICHS is

particularly interested in individuals whose research experience

includes addiction to alcohol, tobacco, and other substances, diet and

nutrition, and global climate change.

Applications to these positions will be accepted electronically. Details

on the application process, including required documentation and

submission procedures, can be accessed by clicking on the 'full

description' link at: http://www.ichs.uaa.alaska.edu/whatsnew.htm.

Thanks,

David

ECO.lution 2010 Focus Districts

Building on the goals developed by the Sustainable Design Assessment Team (SDAT) for the city of Tampa, the Urban Charrette is working to re-connect Tampa both physically and through its diverse organizations.

Community Building Through the Arts

Goal: To support programs which sustain and encourage local artists or art programs across various forms. These programs help Tampa develop its identity and authenticity, foster community spirit and express its cultural heritage so that they may serve as magnets that hold the city together. The Community Building through the Arts district will feature organizations and businesses within the community that express Tampa’s cultural and artistic flavor.

Transportation

Goal: To assist in completing a goal of the comprehensive plan which intends to link the three primary city districts of USF, downtown and Westshore through an efficient light rail system.  We will also be continuing to work with key organizations to complete the high-speed rail project and improve our existing infrastructure with the development of an inclusive multi-modal transit system. The Transit district will feature organizations that directly impact Tampa’s transportation needs.

Natural Assets and Public Space

Goal: To continue our work with local organizations and city leaders to develop, improve and promote great public spaces in and around Tampa.  We also intend to help foster awareness about the Hillsborough River and its importance to Tampa’s ecology, economy and increasing its accessibility to the public. The Natural Assets district features organizations and businesses within the community that are engaged in the restoration and maintenance of Tampa’s ecological resources.

Local Economy

Goal: To encourage local businesses to join organizations so that they may have a louder voice in Tampa.  Working with local organizations we plan to support new, creative businesses and help identify what industries will come to define Tampa’s future economy.Tampa’s entrepreneurs will be on display within this district through a showcase of various local independent businesses that are committed to providing innovative products, personal service and unique experiences for our community.

Neighborhoods

Goal: To strengthen Tampa’s diverse neighborhoods by helping neighborhood organizations increase membership and thus amplify their voices in local government.  We will provide the knowledge and tools for these organizations to make meaningful and lasting physical improvements.  We will encourage the city to help neighborhoods develop community plans through Form Based Code to encourage appropriate growth where it is most needed. Within our upcoming neighborhood studios the Urban Charrette will be promoting community arts, transit and our natural assets within our neighborhoods. This Neighborhoods district will allow you to see how our community is defined through its neighborhoods, iconic buildings and public spaces. Featured in this section are neighborhood associations and professional organizations related to architecture, urban planning, construction and engineering.

Subject: [Usf-ant] Gilbert Kushner hospitalized

Former anthropology chair Gilbert Kushner has undergone surgery relating to the cancer that a few years ago caused the loss of parts of his lungs.  His wife Rainy recently wrote me: "Gil is still at Moffit.   There have been some complications regarding his progress.  Doctors feel like promising results can still occur, but he'll need to remain at Moffit SCU for a while."

I wish I could tell you something about sending cards or  messages to patients at Moffitt, but I haven't found that yet.  Perhaps someone on this SCOPA list can suggest a preferred means.

Anyway, I wanted to let you all know now, even though my message is not very complete.

Best wishes to Gil and Rainy.

Call for Proposals
Integrating Community Indicators and Performance Measures

The Community Indicators Consortium (CIC), as part of a grant from the new cic logo
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, is seeking proposals to write "Real Stories" of communities, organizations, and/or jurisdictions that have tried, successfully and not so successfully, to integrate community indicators and organizational performance measures.

The published Real Stories, from 5-20 pages in length, will be used to advance the knowledge of community indicators-organizational performance measures integration and for training and other outreach material to community leaders as a way to improve or inform decision-making and create measurable, positive change in communities.

We are looking for proposals from individuals and groups who are directly involved in these efforts as well as individuals and organizations that work with community indicator and performance measurement projects. A stipend of $2,000 will be awarded for each Real Stories published.Three-to-five Real Stories will be selected for publication in 2010.

The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2010 Call for Real Stories is June 22, 2010. Notification of selected proposals and guidelines for development will be sent on July 15th. The deadline for the written first draft is September 15, 2010.

Position Announcement

Position Title:

Senior Researcher

Reports To:

Chairman and Founder

Date:

June 10, 2010

Organization Summary

OEF is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization with a vision of developing effective systems of global governance to achieve a world beyond war. It is OEF’s belief that the current system of global governance, which emphasizes nation-states as legitimate actors, is not on its own able to deal with global problems such as intractable conflict. Central to OEF’s mission is partnering closely with the business community. OEF intends to show business how effective models of global governance enhance their revenue streams, operating efficiency, financial stability, and social legitimacy.

Last Call for Real Story Proposals
Integrating Community Indicators and Performance Measures

There is still time left to submit a proposal for a Real Story about integrating community indicators and performance measures.
new cic logo
Up to five proposals will be selected for publication in 2010 as examples of "Real Stories" of communities, organizations, and/or jurisdictions that have tried, successfully and not so successfully, to integrate community indicators and organizational performance measures.

The authors of each "Real Story" will receive a $2,000 stipend when the stories are published at the end of 2010.

The Real Stories project is intended to provide real life examples of the advantages and challenges to both community indicator and organizational performance measurement projects as a result of integrating or linking these two types of efforts. The published Real Stories, from 5-20 pages in length, will be used to advance the knowledge of community indicators-organizational performance measures integration and for training and other outreach material to community leaders as a way to improve or inform decision-making and create measurable, positive change in communities.

This effort is supported by a grant that the Community Indicators Consortium (CIC) received from the
Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to promote, advocate for, and develop a community of practice for community indicators-performance measurement (CI-PM) integration, and for engaging citizens and other key community stakeholders in the process.

The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2010 Call for Real Stories is July 7th, 2010. Notification of selected proposals and guidelines for development will be sent on July 31st. The deadline for the written first draft is September 15, 2010.

Visit the CIC web site for more information about the Real Stories project and the call for proposals. You can also download the Real Stories Proposal submittal form in Word format for more details, or contact the Project Steering committee at CIPM@...

Sam's Club will offer small-business loans

Program will focus on minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam's Club said Tuesday it will offer small business loans of up to $25,000 to its small business members.

The division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which is based in Bentonville, Ark., is testing a program with Superior Financial Group, one of 13 federally licensed nonbank lenders, and will offer $5,000 to $25,000 loans to members who qualify.

Sam's Club says 15 percent of its business members reported they were denied a loan in a November survey. That's up from 12 percent in April 2009.

The program will focus on minority-, women- and veteran-owned businesses.

Sam's Club members who apply for a small business loan during the pilot will receive $100 off the application fee, a 20 percent discount and a discount on interest rates.

Businesses can pay $35 for a membership to Sam's Club that includes three annual membership cards that allow them to shop at 600 Sam's Clubs in the U.S. Sam's Club offers other memberships to consumers and businesses that cost as much as $100 annually depending on the features included.

Although the economy has grown for three straight quarters, tight credit remains a problem for many consumers and businesses.

"Access to capital is a major pain point for our members," said Catherine Corley, vice president, membership at Sam's Club.

Subject: Collateral and limiting exposure on micro-loans

Greetings –

I am working with a small micro-lender in the Northeast that is reviewing its loan approval guidelines. Historically, the fund has secured loans (up to $35,000) by accepting personal and business assets as collateral. Unfortunately, during this recent economic downturn, the organization learned just how limited this collateral really is – if a borrower defaulted and the loan was sent to a collections agency, the lender was likely to receive no more than 30 cents on the dollar, and often less than that. Traditional collateral, such as a car, equipment, house, or other business assets, are just not practical for a small non-profit lender to repossess and resell.

So, my question is, do you (small CDFI micro-lender) use personal and business assets as collateral? Beyond the symbolism, how valuable is such collateral when a business goes into default? Do you have a policy about limiting exposure when using such collateral?

Other related questions: If you don’t use business or personal assets as collateral, do you rely on a co-signer? A third party guarantor (city agency or other lender)? Do you engage in purely “character” lending?

We would like to come up with meaningful policies and procedures for establishing collateral requirements and would like to know what others are doing and, most importantly, what works best?

Thanks, and please reply directly to me,

Hi LPO leaders and all,

As Ellen Puccia, the new LPO Liaison for NAPA, probably told you already, I had to step down in the middle of the 5 year term as LPO Liaison. Our company went through a merger plus I travel so much for the job that I just couldn’t do the Liaison position justice anymore.  I am so grateful to Ellen for taking over.

For those of you who I got to meet at the last 3-4 luncheons during AAA and at the booth during AAA, thank you! You’re in good hands with Ellen now and I wish you all well with your LPOs. LPO leaders are the unsung heroes of Anthro. You help so many people in their careers and the work you do is important for the profession, so keep on organizing!

‘Hope to see you around at the conferences, or if you’re ever in Chicago, look me up.

All the best,

Rebecca

Outgoing LPO liaison for NAPA
