Hi everyone,
As part of our efforts to revitalize SCOPA, I have created a LinkedIn group for
SCOPA, http://www.linkedin.com/groups?about=&gid=3855588&trk=anet_ug_grppro. Our
hope is that this will help provide another tool for communication of upcoming

Not good, amigos.  Last night we had to change the dates for NM to 6-21 to 6-28.  Does it have to be a weekend?  Saturday 6-10 is good but I'm not sure about 6-17 yet.

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title:          Senior Associate, Community Capacity Building

POSITION SUMMARY:

CTAC is seeking a dynamic individual to be part of its senior-level professional team. The Senior Associate will organize and implement programmatic aspects of CTAC’s initiatives in community development, health and human services, and education reform, working independently and as part of teams. This is a rare opportunity for a gifted professional seeking to have a significant impact on communities and public institutions.

The position requires both vision and detail orientation, strong communication skills, outstanding organizational and planning skills, and effective interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate: 1) content knowledge in community organizing, nonprofit management, and/or education reform or school-community partnerships; 2) effective program planning and management; 3) versatility to be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and; 4) a proven ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team. Bachelors degree required (masters preferred), as well as 8-12 years of leadership experience with nonprofit community organizations. Experience with urban public school systems or philanthropic organizations a plus.

The position requires travel, primarily in the Northeast, as well as some evening and weekend obligations. CTAC is an equal opportunity employer and state-certified minority non-profit organization. Women, bilingual individuals and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

The Community Training and Assistance Center (CTAC) is a minority-controlled organization with a thirty-two year record of success in low-income communities. CTAC provides technical assistance to school systems, state departments of education, and community-based organizations to improve education, health, and community and neighborhood revitalization in cities and states throughout the country. There are three primary components to this support: on-site technical assistance, research and evaluation services, and public policy support.

CTAC’s community development team provides community-based groups with training and assistance to manage responsive organizations, to organize communities and to develop effective services and advocacy based on resident or constituent-identified needs. CTAC particularly focuses on efforts that develop and implement resident or constituent-led models that create systemic and institutional change and address root causes of poverty through community organizing. CTAC provides support to build the organizational and development capacity of emerging and experienced organizations and coalitions in low income and multi-racial communities; implement effective public/private partnerships; and strengthen the capacity of nonprofit and governmental systems.

CTAC is particularly sensitive to the needs of disenfranchised communities. In response to the severity of problems confronting low-income communities, CTAC continues to respond to the increasing needs of the most severely disenfranchised low-income groups concerned with neighborhood revitalization, economic development, education, immigration, workers’ rights, youth, environmental justice, human rights, health and human services, and other issues.

Welcome to the FICS newsletter!

Welcome! Bienvenidos! We have great news to share with you!  The Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) has been recognized as the winner of the 2011 WEDU Be More Brilliant Award!

We also held our Multicultural Food and Art Show which was featured in the St Petersburg Times, held Health Careers Expeditions and Fox 13 News visited our FICS Multicultural Family Center.  In this issue you can read more about these events as well as hear about our new Board Member and our awesome Summer World Vacation Program.

FICS Board Members: Jack Levine and Justin Dees

Long-term board member Jack Levine, JD, was ready to step off the FICS Board after three terms but his dilemma was to find another person he felt would be as good or better than him.  Luckily for FICS and Jack, his colleague Justin Dees, JD, also an attorney at Holland and Knight, stepped up to the plate.  While FICS is sad to see Jack leave, we know we can continue to count on him to continue to give us his ideas and advice.  At the same time, we are excited about the energy that Justin brings to our board!  Thanks, Jack and welcome aboard, Justin!

Winner of the WEDU Be More Brilliant Award 2011!

WEDU Awards

The Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) was named the winner of the WEDU Be More Brilliant Award for Innovation! Multicultural Food and Art Show - June 4Diamond Notes Entertainment - Mike Grayson

The Fourth Annual Multicultural Food and Art Show held June 4, 2011 was a great day where we celebrated different cultures and enjoyed amazing art work created by our youth. There were cool beats

Chili'sfor our break dance group lead by Aldo Gamez and smooth tunes for our dance performances by the Dominican Association delivered by our fantastic DJ, Mike Grayson from Diamond Notes Entertainment. The performances were amazing, as were the ethnic foods donated by our FICS Parents, Chili's and Queen of Sheba Ethiopian Restaurant.

StarbucksStarbucks at Westshore Plaza came through for us by donating passion fruit ice tea which was refreshing. Activities during the day included enjoying a bounce house for the young at heart, as well as classes in dancing and drums. A silent auction displayed great donations from the Cason Photography Studio, AppleBee's, and FadeMasters III. The wonderful art created by ourQueen of Sheba Ethiopian restaurant

youth was also on display and several pieces were sold. The St Pete Times visited our event as well and the article was featured in the newspaper on June 5, 2011 entitled "Cultural Fest helps raise funds." We had a great, fun-filled day and were able to raise $600 at the same time. We want to thank our great donors and partners as well as everyone that came out to the event!

Of Note....

FICS has been very busy this quarter!  We held a very successful Health Careers Expedition 2011 over Spring Break with 51 students from RCMA, FICS and many schools. Funded by Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Centers, we visited many universities, hospitals and even museums!  Some of the places we visited were USF Colleges of Medicine and Nursing, St. Pete College, MOSI, Shriner's Hospital for Children, St. Anthony's Hospital, BayFlite, BayFront Hospital and the Dali Museum!  Our brave Expeditioners even dissected sheep's hearts and lungs and revived on programmable patients who died on the operating table!  We have over 200 photos on our Health Careers Expeditions Facebook Page....check it out:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Health-Careers-Expeditions/213233865370950

Hanley Road, we got you covered!  Or rather, FICS' Community Advisors formally adopted Hanley Road with the Keep Hillsborough Beautiful program and we have done two Clean-Ups so far, yielding 15 garbage bags or more each time and such items as lumber to chairs to carpets....you name it!
Join us and make our community better!

IMG_2924FICS Multicultural Family Center is expanding --- after years of waiting for space to become available, we were finally able to acquire the 1000 sq feet of space separating our main offices and classrooms.  The plans for expansion are awesome and we continue to fundraise for our "moveable walls" and improved bathrooms.

Thanks especially to
LazyDays Employee Foundation for their generous support of $5600 for our bathrooms!  Employees donated their personal money to our cause!  At left is our photo with LazyDays' Andrea Neeper and FICS board member Carlton Lewis with FICS staff, parents and youth.  Other contributors of note include board members Mr. Pablo Sierra and Ms. Maria Antonieta Riveros Revello.  We love you guys!!!  There will be a big pachanga or party when we get done!  Stay tuned or call us @ 813.249.8100 for details.

Six FICS Youth were selected to represent us at the Social Change Conference which is sponsored by the Turn2Foundation, founded by Yankees star Derek Jeter!  As Jeter's Leaders, our youth will be spending an intense three days at the University of Tampa from July 18 to July 21, 2011.
Our leaders are: Abraham Giraldo, Natalie Gotay, Mynor Perez, Nahisha Nobregas, Mariana Sanchez, and Sandra Sanchez!  Congratulations!

Summer World Vacation - FICS Summer Program

The Summer Program entitled World Vacation started June 13, 2011 and the students have been divided into groups researching different continents and a few countries within each continent. Questions like what do people eat in China and what kind of money do they have in Argentina are answered by our eager world scholars.

We have several weekly trips to the library to do research on the various countries and cities visited, which is part of
Reading with the Rays. A longer field trip is scheduled for the Glazer Museum and the Fit Kids Playground on July 5, 2011. The Fit Kids Playground offers free activities such as dance, gymnastics, karate and much more, for youth every first Tuesday of the month and we are excited for our kids to take part in this.

We are also visiting the Dali Museum in St Pete on August 2, 2011 as well as going to the Rays game that day. Go Rays!

This program is self-funded by parents and a generous donation by board member Ms. Maria Antonieta Revello.  That means that YOU could make a major difference by being a Madrina or Padrino to a young camper for only $25 per week!
Please consider making a donation if possible at our link at the end of the newsletter!

FICS' Community Advisors were in the Top Ten Finalists of Creative Tampa Bay's 10, 100, 1000 Challenge for "A Nicer Tampa Bay Campaign"

 IMG_2886

Inspired by the concept of "Pay It Forward," FICS' Town n Country Community Advisors decided to respond to Creative Tampa Bay's call to action and submitted their idea on what would improve our community here in Tampa Bay. The idea is to remind the community about the contributions that teens and youth make every day to bettering our world.  The teens realized that the "only time people think about us is when someone does something wrong or gets involved in a gang and it ends up on the news."  Instead, the teens want some recognition not just for themselves but for everyone in our community.  What about a bracelet that reads "I Made Tampa Bay Nicer"?  The idea would be that when youth see people doing good deeds, they are awarded a bracelet.  This bracelet comes with a card that explains how to pass it on.  We believe it will create a chain reaction of kindness.  Since we all love our phones and Facebook, we will snap photos of the bracelet exchange, load them to our Facebook page and see where they end up after a year.

The campaign is inspiring and motivating on two levels as it both recognizes and rewards those who help the community as well as motivates youth and provides incentive to continue improving the community, paying it forward.  Pictured above are our Community Advisors (l-r) Ariana Ulloa, Brandon Quetal and Nahisha Nobregas with Creative Loafing's Editor Mr. David Warner at the 10-100-1000 Awards Ceremony.

Channel 13 visited the Multicultural Family Center and met with our volunteers to hear what they have done to make Tampa Bay nicer.

Do not miss the report on the Channel 13 calling us What's Right About Tampa Bay, scheduled for July 4, 2011 at 6PM!

With more funding there would be more resources available to purchase a greater number of bracelets and promote the idea and spread the word. If you have any dollars to spare we would be most grateful and we may continue to make Tampa Bay nicer.

A silent auction displayed great donations from the Cason Photography Studio, AppleBee's, and FadeMasters III. The wonderful art created by ourQueen of Sheba Ethiopian
restaurant

youth was also on display and several pieces were sold.

SPECIAL "Locals Only" rate for residents of Tallahassee and Leon County. Be sure to take advantage of the special scholarship program established by the City and County. Only $50 if you are paying with personal funds. Apply now!

This year's conference will feature some great speakers who are leading by example and moving their communities toward a more sustainable future!

Keynote SpeakersWe'll kick it off with Mayor Bob Dixson who is leading a rebuilding effort in Greensburg, Kansas, after a destructive tornado tore up the town in May  2007. Sustainable building, renewable energy and "green" technologies are the cornerstones of the recovery of Greensburg.

Described as an Eco-Entrepreneur, Majora Carter will keynote the opening day luncheon with her "Home(town) Security" presentation. A 2011 TED Prize winner and one of Fast Company's Top 100 Creative People in Business, Majora hosts the Peabody Award winning public-radio series: The Promised Land. She has a long list of awards and honorary degrees, including a MacArthur "genius" Fellowship. She founded Sustainable South Bronx in 2001 when few were talking about "sustainability"; and even fewer, in places like The South Bronx.

It is always important to have a good story and Joe Tankersley is a master at helping to write one that attracts attention, secures emotional connection and compels action. Joseph Tankersley is a storyteller, futurist and creator of immersive experiences. For over 25 years he has helped organizations create compelling messages about their goals and visions for the future. He has worked with national and international corporations, NGO's and governments. Joe employs a wide range of media tools; from oral storytelling to feature films and fully immersive physical environments to help communicate these messages of better tomorrows.

We have a great closing plenary panel with regional and state leaders who are busy trying to design and implement sustainable community plans. Moderated by Cambridge Systematics' John Kaliski, Pat Steed, Jim Murley and Kathy Neill will explore the sustainable communities planning efforts being undertaken by two distinct regions in Florida - South East Coast of Florida stretching from Indian River County to Monroe and the Heartland in the Central Florida Regional Partnership region. Along with a look at the Department of Transportation's Horizon 2060 long-range strategic plan for Florida.

2011 Florida Green School Award Finalists

Student Finalists

  • Celeste Norup teaches at Bessey Creek Elementary School in Jensen Beach and is involved with the students in the school's Green Club. Their recycling initiatives have reduced trash consumption at the school by one-third and motivated the families of students and staff to recycle at home.
  • Madeline Cowen and Larissa Weinstein made an impact as co-presidents in Gables Earth Environmental Club under the guidance of their teacher, Jenny Lopez-Ponce of Coral Gables Senior High School. They helped create a mural behind the school's new butterfly garden, were involved in the expansion of the school's recycling program, and have both been featured in a film titled "Young Voices on Climate Change."
  • Monica Dyches is a student leader in reducing the carbon footprint at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. She participated in the planting of native trees and the removal of non-native species in the school's half-acre area of pine flat woods and assisted in raising money to help Haiti plant trees to lower their own carbon footprint.

Class Finalists

  • Deb Wagner is a 4th grade teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School who, along with her students, has been working to lessen the school's environmental footprint with students planting 80 trees to help prevent soil erosion and restore habitat that was destroyed by a road project.
  • Peter Jordan is a returning finalist and teacher at Ocoee High School who guided the student-led project, Ocoee Green, which encourages student leadership and environmental stewardship in the community. Their project focused on composting, organic vegetable farming, recycling, water catchment, hydroponics and vermiculture.
  • Ray Cruze is an agriculture teacher at Roosevelt Academy who implemented the program, Roosevelt Farms. This program teaches children with learning disabilities how to grow and maintain crops without using harmful chemicals, while also conserving water.

Teacher Finalists

  • Josh Clearman led his class in creating a green learning environment at Key West High School. With his guidance, his class produced power via a wind turbine, reduced carbon emissions, planted trees, saved more than 1,000 gallons of water, produced 100 gallons of biodiesel and recycled 1,000 gallons of oil.
  • Deborah Pate is in charge of the Suter Energy Savers of A.K. Suter Elementary School. She incorporated green learning activities into her daily lessons including alternative energy awareness, constructing a solar house, using a solar oven and creating a wind turbine.
  • Wendy Doromal of Timber Creek High School implemented a service learning theme at her school. She raised awareness of environmental issues by leading a school-wide recycling program, preserving habitats, protecting endangered species, and conserving energy and water.

School Finalists

  • Learning Gate Community School lives by the motto "Nature Is Our Best Teacher" and uses their achieved LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) Platinum certified building as a teaching tool.
  • Lawton Chiles Elementary School brought out the environmental stewardship in their students and staff members. This school's recycling efforts have diverted 2,500 pounds of material from entering the landfill each week.
  • David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center saved $76,000 by reducing their energy waste. Students led projects supporting sustainable technology including a solar powered waterfall and a noise detection device with LED bulbs.
  • Pine Jog Elementary, a previous Green School Award-winning finalist, created a school recycling program titled Growing Up Green. The program was also involved with Terracycle and earned the school a $450 rebate for turning in juice pouches, candy wrappers and zip lock bags. Pine Jog collected old shoes for Shoes for The Cure and 87 pounds of pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House. They reused trash and plastic bottles to make planters and musical instruments. The school saved 482,000 gallons of water and reduced waste by 2,180 cubic yards.

District Finalists

  • Pinellas County used a district energy management plan to define a set of standards for school waste reduction. The plan emphasized practical training, reducing energy usage and enlarging recycling programs. Each school had green teams and campus litter patrols to implement the recycling programs.
  • Duval County started the Green Champions program, which consisted of reducing operating costs, eliminating waste, conserving natural resources, and incorporating sustainability into the curriculum.
  • Charlotte County's approach to energy conservation management used a simple program called "As Easy as One, Two, Three." Its objectives were to save cost, keep buildings safe from environmental harm and maintain an optimal education environment.

Get your tickets today - simply complete the online form. Dinner tickets are $45. You can get a reservation at the West Palm Beach Marriott where the dinner will take place. Finalists - who are being contacted individually - will receive two complimentary dinner tickets and one night's stay at the hotel.

Hello, LPO leaders. I hope all is well with you and your LPO.

As the AAA annual meeting is rapidly approaching, there are several items I
would like to make the LPO's aware of before the meeting. Please forward this
information to members of your LPO as needed. Thanks.

1. NAPA/LPO booth volunteers: NAPA will have a booth at the Employer Expo on
Friday, November 18 from 11-4. We will also have a booth at the Grad Student
Fair on Saturday, November 19 from 10-2. We are looking for volunteers to work
an hour each (or more) at the NAPA/LPO booth. With so much traffic from
students and early career professionals, this would be a good way to meet
potential new members for your organization. No special knowledge is needed.
Info about all LPO's will be available at the booths. The location of the booth
will be listed in the conference program. Volunteers should sign up with Ellen
Puccia: epuccia@...<mailto:epuccia@...>. Please see attached sign-up
sheet.

2. Supply your LPO flyer for the booth: Please ask someone to drop off flyers or
brochures that describe your LPO for us to hand out at the NAPA/LPO booth at AAA
so people will know who to contact, etc. You can e-mail a flyer to Ellen Puccia,
epuccia@...<mailto:epuccia@...> at any time before the meeting, or you
can leave the flyers with the NAPA volunteers at the NAPA booth in the Employer
Expo at 11 am on Friday, November 18.

3. Be an instant mentor: If anyone would be interested in serving as an instant
mentor for students and early career professionals at the AAA meetings, please
contact the instant mentor coordinator Ellen Puccia,
epuccia@...<mailto:epuccia@...>. This program has been a great success
at past meetings. Please contact the mentor coordinator soon to reserve your
preferred time slot. Please see attached sign-up sheet.

4. Represent your LPO at the LPO luncheon: On Friday, Nov 18, from 12noon-2pm,
we will have our annual LPO luncheon at a nearby restaurant. This will be
primarily a social function where we can informally discuss news and issues
relevant to LPO's. This would be a great time for new LPO organizers and more
seasoned LPO participants to share their experiences from many perspectives.
There are several options for lunch, but we are trying to find a place with
local Montreal cuisine. The LPO member from your organization who plans to
attend the luncheon should e-mail Ellen Puccia,
epuccia@...<mailto:epuccia@...> as soon as possible.

Thank you so much for your help with these matters. I look forward to hearing
from you.

Ellen Puccia
LPO Liaison and Volunteer Coordinator

Hello, LPO Representatives. The AAA annual meetings are in only two weeks. At
this point, only one LPO has expressed interest in attending the luncheon.
Please let me know if someone from your organization would be interested in
attending this luncheon on Friday, November 18, from 12-2pm.

If you are not the contact person for your LPO, could you please let me know who
I should contact? I will then remove your email from the list.

Thank you for your help.
