Updates to the Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) Multicultural Family Center’s Grand Re-Opening on 4/27/2012, 4-8 PM

Tampa, FL:  The Florida Institute for Community Studies is pleased to announce some exciting new developments for our Grand Re-Opening of the FICS Multicultural Family Center on Friday April 27, 2012 from 4-8 PM.  This event is part of our year-long festivities related to our tenth anniversary.  Our Prodigy program is also holding its quarterly showcase at the Grand Re-Opening so guests will see first-hand how talented our many youth (and adults) are.  They will be interpreting our Spring Theme of Friendship through breakdance, visual arts, capoeira and latin drums.  Speaking of friendship, our wonderful DJ Diamond Notes will be DJing and helping MC the event.

Additionally, we will be recognizing our amazing donors who helped to make this day possible: Mr. Pablo Sierra and family, LazyDays Employee Foundation and Lowe’s Foundation.  We have also garnered some great raffles and silent auction items, which will be announced next week!

Please join us for a wonderful one-of-a kind celebration which is open to our partners and businesses to sponsor tables and share information.  We still have space!   Call us at 813.249.8100 for more information or stop by FICS Multicultural Family, 6704 Hanley Road, Tampa FL 33634.

The Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) has functioned for ten years as a statewide non-profit organization working within communities to plan and create better futures.  Our programming serves over two thousand people annually, ages seven to seventeen and adults.  In addition to outreach services,  FICS Multicultural Family Center is centrally located and offers an array of programs, mentoring/tutoring, computer access, HIV/AIDS testing, English, Spanish and Italian classes and much more.  Volunteers are always welcome.  Visit us at www.ficsinc.org

Today is the Mexican Mother’s Day, to be celebrated tomorrow  in Ruskin, 5/11/12, 4:30 – 5:45 PM

Ruskin, FL–  The Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) has worked for ten years across Hillsborough County but we started in South County and one of our main activities has always been uniting the community around cultural events that have real significance.  Every May 10 is Mother’s Day in Mexico so it is only fitting that we will be celebrating our Friendship theme with a nod to all the wonderful mothers in our South County Prodigy program!  Entitled “Our Favorite Things: Mothers and Friends” our showcase will feature local breakdancers and artists, with a few surprises (and maybe some singing?) at the South Shore Regional Library,  15816 Beth Shields Way, Ruskin, FL  33573.

This event is FREE and open to the public.  We will also be signing up youth between the ages of 7 and 17 for our FREE cultural arts afterschool programs in Ruskin!  Pass the word and join us!

The Florida Institute for Community Studies (FICS) facilitates these events as part of our Strategic Plan for South County, however, the event is planned and made possible by Prodigy, the UACDC, Bay Area Youth Services, Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, parents and Starbucks.

Join us!  FICS partners with communities to help them achieve their goals through research, service, education and training.  Join our cause on Facebook or by volunteering: www.ficsinc.org or by calling 813.249.8100.

Because anthropologists have been so intensely involved in matters relating to children since the beginning of our MA Applied Anthropology program, through the Applied Anthropology Internship Project, through the USF Collaborative for Children, Families and Communities, through Will Michaels (Phd, Applied Anthropology) having been the first Director of the Children’s Board,, and through the six or seven anthropologists currently on CBHC staff, I think we should have some discussion of what is going on there now.  Here are several URLs to current newspaper articles:

Out of almost 500 USF Applied Anthropology theses and dissertations I found 50 or so that seemed to me relevant to the Children's Board of Hillsborough County CHBC.

Most interesting, in the years 1990 -1992, are these four:

10

View

Illyes, Judit

1992

An Anthropological Perspective on the Children's Board of Hillsborough County.

11

View

Lampinen, Linda

1991

Children's Services Coordination Study.

12

View

Martinez-Ramos, Yolanda

1991

Educating The Children of Migrant Workers: Agricultural Anthropological Perspective.

13

View

Loeb, Bertram

1990

Planning for Services to Children in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Bert Loeb's dissertation Planning for Services to Children in Hillsborough County would be very good required reading for anyone interested in the problem, including any board member, potential board member, executive director, whether permanent, interim, or applicant for the position.

One quote from Loeb's dissertation gives an idea of the problem:

The Children's Board . . . offered for the first time the opportunity to approach the issue [of prevention] afresh. The viewpoint of those in support of prevention has so far (1990) prevailed. In the words of its founding policy statement:

The mission of the Children's  Board is to ensure and provide for the delivery of comprehensive children's services, with special emphasis on establishing prevention and early intervention programs to meet the needs of children and their families (Children's Board, 1989).

Given the climatic changes, not only global ecological, but also economic and political changes, can the Children's Board maintain its emphasis on prevention and early intervention?

Here are 2 job openings at the Annie E. Casey Foundation.  See links for more details and instructions on how to apply.

Senior Associate – Evaluation & Research, Knowledge Support Team

http://www.aecf.org/AboutUs/Careers/SeniorAssociateEvalKS.aspx?Method=

Position Summary: Reporting to the Associate Director of the Knowledge Support (KS) team, the Senior Associate will lead efforts to evaluate the Foundation’s influence-related activities (for example, policy analysis and advocacy, communications, and partnerships with national organizations and other philanthropies). This work includes both building the self-evaluation capacity of Foundation staff and grantees, and overseeing the design and management of independent, third-party evaluations. The Senior Associate will also be the lead KS staff person working with one or more of the Foundation’s program teams.

Senior Associate – Performance Management, Knowledge Support Team

http://www.aecf.org/AboutUs/Careers/SeniorAssociatePerformanceMngmnt.aspx?Method

Position Summary: Reporting to the Vice President who leads the KS team, the Senior Associate will be responsible for developing and implementing a performance management system for the Foundation. In this context, we are referring to the performance of the Foundation’s programmatic efforts. The Foundation has an existing system for evaluating the performance of individual staff members. Casey has long experience with data-driven management, and has utilized Results-Based Accountability as a tool for more than a decade. We now seek to more consistently, for each of our portfolios, identify desired results, measure our progress against those results, and use what we learn to improve our performance. Senior managers throughout the Foundation will take up this responsibility, relying on KS to help develop the tools and capacity needed to do it well.

SCOPA members will be interested in this new web site supported by AAA:

http://www.thisisanthropology.org/index.cfm .

According to Professor Liz Bird, interim chair of the USF Anthropology Department, USF students have taken another step toward educating the public about what anthropologists do here and around the world. Now, for further response Florida's Governor Rick Scott's negative comments about Anthropology, you are invited to share your anthro stories on this new forum:

http://www.thisisanthropology.org/join.cfm

Prof Bird writes: "There's no doubt that this national initiative would not have happened without the passion of USF students, who set out to tell Florida and beyond what anthropology really is. This now gives all of us tools to help explain who we are, and why the world actually does need more anthropologists."

You can plot your educational institution, other work affiliations, and study sites on the map—think of each of those map pins as opportunities to share why your work (and anthropology!) is important.  This map is searchable, and as it grow, we hope it will serve as a resource for students, faculty and others to find anthropologists in particular subfields, as well as geographic and topical areas.  Once you submit a profile you will receive an email with a link that allows you to edit your profile any time in the future—so your profile can grow with you!

The site targets the general public and students in particular (high school, undergraduates) to introduce the field of anthropology.  So please, take a look, put your work on the map, and feel free to send us your comments and suggestions about the site.

It looks like a good opportunity for Practicing Anthroplogists as well.

Praxis Award Now Accepting Submissions

Since 1981, the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists (WAPA) biennial Praxis Award has recognized outstanding achievement in translating anthropological knowledge into action as reflected in a single project or specific, long-term endeavor. Ideal candidates are anthropologists, particularly those working outside of academia, who can demonstrate the value of anthropological theory and methods in work that impacts the public good.  This is not a career or lifetime achievement award, but one that recognizes the value of applying anthropology to everyday problems and issues.

Competition entries are due July 1, 2013 and should clearly demonstrate how the applicant used anthropology to effectively address a contemporary human problem. The competition for this prestigious award is open to anyone holding an MA or PhD in any subfield of anthropology. WAPA strongly encourages nominations (including self-nominations) from individuals, groups or organizations wherein at least one anthropologist worked on and influenced the designated project. Entries are open to anthropologists worldwide. All entries will be reviewed according to the same set of criteria by an expert panel of anthropological practitioners.

Award recipients receive a $1,000 stipend and will be recognized at the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology (NAPA) business meeting, held during the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) in November 2013 in Chicago.

Application information is available through the WAPA website at http://wapa.cloverpad.org/praxis. Nominations must include a cover page and a 5 to 10-page descriptive essay. Entries will be strengthened by supporting letters, public testimonials and media releases from project clients and beneficiaries (not colleagues).

To better understand the types of achievements that merit the award, see the Praxis Award Recipients document on the WAPA website, which lists all prior winners and presents the abstracts of their competition entries.

Winners may be asked to give a presentation for WAPA, if feasible, and to contribute a chapter to a future edition of Anthropological Practice: Translating Knowledge into Action (Robert M. Wulff and Shirley J. Fiske, Eds.).

Applications will not be accepted after the July 1, 2013 deadline.

5. Suggestions/Recommendations

Finally, NAPA is going to have a table at the SfAA conference in Denver from March 19th-23rd. Please ask someone to drop off flyers or brochures that describe your LPO for us to hand out at the NAPA/LPO table so people will know who to contact, etc. You can also e-mail a flyer to me, Jason Lind - jasonlindo@... at any time before the meeting.

Once I get some feedback I will send out more information about the NAPA table in Denver and a schedule in case any of you would like to volunteer at the NAPA table.

Thanks for your interest in NAPA and I look forward to working with you all in the future.

Take care and all the best!

Jason
