I saw the pics you reprocessed.
There's a big difference alright.
I was going to crop the M13 shot so it would appear larger.
I was afraid of lightening it up too much because I thought I'd lose
detail in the center of the image...boy was I wrong there = ))
The M31 I posted on the site was before I subtracted the dark frames.
After I did that, my image looks a lot better but it's still a little
dark.
I'm going to play around with processing today and see what I can come
up with.
Thanks for the input!!!
Jim
Jim,
I downloaded your new images from the aisig site and processed them
a little further using PhotoShop 7
For the M13 shot, I created a flat field which I subtracted from the
original then stretched it a little more with curves which brought
out more of the data.
The M31 shot, I used curves and adjusted the color by adjusting hue
and saturation. If I had the original data from this shot, I
probably would have processed it differently.
I've uploaded the shots so you can see the comparison of before and
after the extra processing in the files section. The folder is
called "Jim's images reprocessed."
Oh, by the way... NICE WORK!!!
And just a little tip, if you want to post a direct link to your
image on Jerry's aisig site, you have to click on your image where
all of the images are shown, ei, the photos tab. By going this route
the URL for you image includes your member ID. The direct link to
your M31 is:
http://aisig.sdaa.org/astroblogDetail.asp?imgID=698&UserID=84
not
http://aisig.sdaa.org/astroblog/astroblogDetail.asp?imgID=698
which only sends you to the members list, not diredtly to you image.
I spent hours trying to figure that out putting together the Messier
List on my webpage:
http://members.cox.net/strgazer56/messier_objects.htm

Thanks Carey! The spikes you see on the bright stars are diffraction spikes caused by the spider in mt newtonian.. .not blooming. The only time I've been able to get my 300D to bloom is when I've shot at ISO 3200 (I installed the firmware hack). . .

Jeff,
Your image got a loud verbal "WOW" out of me. The colors look great to me. What's wild is that the NGC is the only thing with color; everything else looks black and white and looks like it was taken with a CCD, especially with the blooming on the brighter stars. Reminds me of those pictures where they purposely make everything else black and white to make the one thing stand out in color.
I'm not at a point where I worry about color balance. I just do the eyedropper on the light and the dark. I'm scared to play with the mid-tones, then everything comes out green or purple. I just adjust for a black background and white stars, and let what ever colors in between fall in place or stay the same.

Maybe it's blooming? That M13 actually is pretty darn crisp. . .in the M8 images though, the swirls of nebulosity, etc. aren't very sharp, which is what I mean by "fuzzy and out of focus". . .I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the same image with a Canon (or similar higher resolution chip) vs. the camera you are using (ST7??). That would solve the mystery. . .If your green channel is out of focus, maybe you've got some chromatic abberation? I dunno. . .again. . .reaching at straws. . .
I'm heading out to TDS now. . .hope to see some of you out there!!!

Jeff I just went back through some of the individual shots before stacking or any other processing. Looks like my green data was out of focus. everything else looked okay. That's where this shot deteriated when it was all combined to creat the color shot. Is what your seeing in my shots, "blurry and lack of detail", the fact that the stars are not the pin points that you're used to seeing using film or DSLR's. This camera just does not have that resolution to get pinpoint stars and the fact that I'm shooting through a SCT may have something to do with it. If you look at my shot of m13:

I loaded a shot of the Lagoon Nebula that I shot last week. I've incorporated a spacer between the filter wheel and the camera which has decreased the coma when using the Meade f/3.3 CCD focal reducer. Only drawback is that I can't get the f/6.3 focal reducer to focus in this configuration. Here is the link to the image of M8: http://aisig.sdaa.org/astroblogDetail.asp?imgID=692&UserID=24

OK, now that we've got some membership, I want to let you guys, and gal
know to feel free to fill up those Tools over on the left hand side of
your screen: Files, Photos, Links, Database, etc...
It's your site and it's new so there is plenty of room.

Yes I did, I used the red to go along with the night vision modes of
most astronomy programs, and a black background so as to put out less
light from the screen, as if you were viewing it while you were
observing... yeah right.
I hope that made sense; I'm exhausted from boogie-boarding all day at
the water park.
Thank you,

Great idea Carey, This should be fun and great forum to learn imaging
tips.
I just picked up a ToUCam Pro II and plan to be up at the site
Saturday to give it a go. I'll let you all know how it went.
Carey, I would be interested in being a moderator for this group if
you would like to consider me.
Thanks,
Bob
Great idea. . .should be some fun/entertaining and educational
discussions. . .I'll be out this Sat. on private pad #42 (next to Jim
Janusz). Feel free to wander over and say hi!

I plan on making some of the members Moderators, and even Joint
Owners, so that the page can be edited when I can not.
I may even need to transfer Ownership at some time if I leave the
area.
Anyway just wanted to let you guys know of this possibility. I'll
wait to see what members we get and who is interested.
Here is the Q&A on the subject from Yahoo.
How do I make someone a moderator of my group?
To promote one of your members to moderator status, follow these
steps:
Locate the member on the Members page.
Click on the Edit link.
Click on the Make Moderator button.
The moderator you appoint will have basic privileges in the group
features you've made available, including Files, Calendar, Polls,
Database, and Links. In these areas, the moderator will be able to
add, edit, and delete items, including items submitted by other
members.
You also have the option of assigning advanced moderator privileges
to the moderator for the Messages, Members, and Settings areas.
Can have I have more than one owner/moderator?
The owner of a group may appoint other members to be
owners/moderators. Each group can have a maximum of 15
owners/moderators.
Carey
Yep, right after me, #1.
