This article
is part three of a four part series on optimizing your website for the the
three major search engines. Part one, titled "SEO For MSN"
covered optimizing your website to rank highly on MSN, while part two, titled
"SEO For
Yahoo!" covered optimizing your website to rank on Yahoo!. In this
article we will cover optimizing your website for Google.
I likely
don't even need to mention that Google is currently the largest of all the
search engines with ComScore Media estimating this giant to be responsible for
42.7% of all online searches in March of 2006. For this reason people tend to
view Google as the
engine to rank on. While this point is debatable (let's remember that there's
still 57.3% of searches that aren't done on Google) it's definitely an
important engine to rank on. So how is it done?
The
Factors
To
optimize and rank highly on Google, as with any of the major engines, specific
areas need to be addressed. On Google the most important of these factors are:
Backlinks
Age
Content
How it fares in the results
Backlinks
More than
on either Yahoo! or MSN backlinks are key to attaining top rankings on Google.
More importantly, Google's methods for calculating the weight of backlinks is
very different than either of the other two engines. Once upon a time backlink
acquisition was mainly a numbers game. If you had more links you had higher
rankings, it was basically as simple as that. Today however Google has an
algorithm inside their algorithm for determining which links are more valuable
than others. This algorithm has a number of factors itself, however there are
some that are more important than others. They key factors that determine the
value of a link in regards to its contributions to the ranking of your site
are:
The age of the links -
Like domains, links gain weight with age. The longer your links have been
on a web page the higher their value. Basically this means that your link
building efforts today aren't going to pay off for a number of months. The
weight seems to age gradually. In a month your link will hold partial
weight, in two months it'll hold a bit more and so on. Links hold the
majority of their weight after about 5 to 6 months.
The location of the link -
The physical location of your link on the page is an indicator to Google
of it's value. A link buried in the footer of a page will hold virtually
no weight whereas a link near the top (i.e. where a visitor is likely to
see it) will hold much more. Another location factor is how this link is
situated relative to the content around it. A link that is located within
content holds more weight than a link in a typical link-page or directory
format with a title and description. The inline nature of the
aforementioned location indicates that the link itself is more natural.
The anchor text and formatting
- The linking text used is obviously important. If you are targeting a
phrase such as "seo firms" then using these two keywords in the
anchor text is going to attach relevancy between your site and these
keywords. Be careful though, building a thousand links using all the same
anchor text is going to look suspicious. Vary your anchor text, perhaps
include other keywords and you'll find your efforts rewarded. The
formatting of the link is also relevant. A link that uses bold, italics,
etc. is obviously meant to be seen by a visitor and is thus more highly
regarded by Google.
Relevancy - The relevancy
of the site linking to you is of key importance. Getting a link on a
health site if you're an SEO firm is going to hold little weight whereas a
link from an SEO resource site will be much more valuable.
PageRank - While the value
of PageRank is arguably dropping when one is considering it's importance
in link building it is still a factor. A link from a PageRank 5 page is worth
substantially more than a link from a PageRank 2 page.
Age
In a
patent application from back in 2004 Google told SEO firms (and anyone else for
that matter) that age was an important factor. Google has since become a domain
name registrar which gives them access to whois data and thus they can clearly
see the age of a domain, who it is registered to, where it is hosted, etc. The
older your domain is the more legitimate Google sees it and thus the more
likely they are to rank it. Additionally, domains that are registered for
longer periods of time are also seen as more legitimate and thus will tend to
rank higher.
Content
Google is
more picky than either Yahoo! or MSN when it comes to content. While the
phrase, "content is king," may be overused it is still relevant. The
more content you have on your site the more likely someone is to find what
they're looking for when they get there. Thus, the more content you have on
your site the more likely Google is to believe a searcher will find what
they're looking for there. This does not mean that you should grab every bit of
content you can find and build a 500,000 page site about potatoes. The content
needs to be relevant and preferably well written. While a search engine spider
may not be able to tell if your content is truly well written it must appeal to
a human visitor. The reason for this will be made more clear below.
A blog is
a good option for the easy addition of relevant content provided that you can
dedicate the time (generally only a few minutes per day) to post some new and
interesting information on your industry.
Keyword
density is not as large a factor on Google as on Yahoo! or MSN however it is a
factor and in the SEO "game" any factor that holds weight needs to be
taken into consideration in all but the least competitive areas. While a site
targeting a phrase such as "bed and breakfast in the middle of
nowhere" can afford weakness in some of the areas most of us cannot. As
noted in the articles on MSN and Yahoo! it would be unwise for me to specify an
optimal keyword density here as the optimal levels vary by site type, topic,
and fluctuate with the algorithm updates. Keyword densities need to be
reanalyzed approximately monthly or any time an update is noted.
How
it fares in the results
How your
website fares in the results is a growing factor and will only continue to gain
importance as time passes. If your website appears in the results for a
specific phrase yet no one click on is your website will drop out of the
rankings. Arguably worse, if your website is clicked however after a few
seconds Google detects that the searcher has returned to the results to find a
new site your site will drop. It is for this reason that it is important to
insure that the titles you write for your website are both search engine and
human friendly. You want Google to rank it highly and you also need humans to
click it or Google won't rank it highly (circular logic I know but valid
nonetheless).
You also
need to make sure that what people see when they first land on your page either
is the information they are looking for or alternatively, clearly indicates
where that information can be found. This point may seem obvious simply from a
usability standpoint however the number of sites out there that violate this
basic principle is vast. As part of your SEO efforts you will want to take a
look at your site from a user's standpoint or better yet, watch real users
navigate it to see if they can find what they're looking for quickly. You have
about 3 seconds to get a visitor's attention so make sure that your visitor can
find what they want in that time. You may need to hire experienced web
designers to bring your website up to speed however the cost of this is lower
than the cost of losing rankings and business due to poor design and the
falling rankings that will follow.
Conclusion
Google
has the most sophisticated algorithm of the three major engines and must be
treated as such. Tricks rarely work and when they do they tend to work only for
a short period of time. Build a strong site with lots of quality content that
is easily navigated and will appeal to your human visitors and you're off to a
good start. Optimize your keyword densities and secure quality links to your
site and while it may take a bit of time to get past the aging delays, you will
succeed on Google.

Designing is the base of search engine optimization and it
plays a very big role in seo work for any site. The following steps must be
considered during the design process for optimal search engine friendliness.
Here are some tips for designing an SEO friendly site:
# Site must be user friendly and easy to navigate the inner
pages and links. Site web page contents must be user interesting and
informative according to the web page headings.
# Keep your navigation on the left side of your web pages.
Our SEO experts at Vision Media explain, “Site navigation should be at
the left side of the web page, so that search engine robots can easily crawl
all site inner page links.”
# Avoid using JavaScript, flash and frames on your web pages
and navigation links. Generally search engine robots does not crawl JavaScript,
flash and frames.
# If you are using images in your site header, then try to
split your image into several sections. It will help you put more keywords in
alt tags here. It will also help you to save site load time.
# Header tags are very important for SEO work, so always use
header tags on your web pages. It will be great if you use the h1 tag as your
web page heading and it should be kept relatively short. However, never use the
h1 tag twice on one page.
Note: H1 tag always shows in bold format and it also take
some extra spaces between the lines. So try to adjust heading text with the css
style sheet according to the site design and look.
# As you may have heard, “content is king” on
the web, especially when it comes to seo, so the more the better. However, make
sure you put the main keywords at the beginning of the page contents on all
your information pages.
# A VERY important point not considered by most web
designers, is to avoid unnecessary coding in the webpage source code like P and
span.
In our work, we have found an unusually high amount of
unnecessary code though, and I guarantee that if you think your web pages do
not have unnecessary code in them, you’re probably lying to yourself.
This is largely due to the high number of websites built in Macromedia
Dreamweaver and Adobe GoLive. These programs are notorious for inserting
massive amounts of unnecessary code, making your web pages look much cluttered
to search engine spiders. A good idea is to have one of our SEO experts examine
your web pages for unnecessary code and make recommendations. They are among
the best in the business. You’d be truly amazed at the impact it has on
your site load time as well as your search engine rankings.
# Lastly, try to avoid using too many tables on a web page,
as overuse of tables is not good for seo purposes. A great alternative for
using tables that web designers rarely consider is the use of div tags.
Social bookmarking is a new trend in search engine
optimization, which has gained recognition as part of a new type of website
optimization, termed “social media optimization (SMO).” Social Book
marking, also referred to sometimes as “social bookmarketing”, is
the term used for bookmarking sites on the web and sharing them with friends.
It is similar to bookmarking a site on your pc, in the “favorites”
of your web browser.
There is an increasing number of websites available on the
web that provides this as a free service for bookmarking your sites or blogs on
the web. These sites are known as social bookmarking sites. Once you have
created a free account, you may begin adding bookmarks to your account. The
advantage is that once you have bookmarked any site then you can access them
from anywhere on the web, and also share them with friends.
Tricking the search engines just does not work. The search
engines do not look kindly upon webmasters who attempt to deceive the search
engines about the content contained on a webpage.
Ranking your website at the top of every search engine is
everybody's wet dream. There are no real secrets on how to achieve a high
ranking with the major search engines, because effective search engine
optimizations are now available on the internet, but it takes consistency, a
solid game plan and a lot of trials and errors to fine tune this cyber art.
What is search engine optimization? Before we discuss this, one has to
understand first how search engines work.

Objectware Inc, an Atlanta-based web development company
with an active branch in WashingtonDC, has been rated among the top Search Engine
Optimization (SEO) programs in the United States by respected internet
marketing portal PromotionWorld.com. The recognition of Objectware's internet
marketing program, ranked as number eight in the nation, is a credit to the
talent and dedication of its team of search engine analysts and web developers.
1. Title Tag – Use a proper title tag. Choose the most important
keywords of your page and try to include the keywords that are repeated in the
contents of page. Title tag is the first thing which a search engine crawler
will see. The keywords in the title tag will be visible in the title bar of the
web browser.
2. Keywords – Give emphasis to the keywords of your pages.
Include the keywords in the title tag and the heading tag.. Always be careful
regarding the keyword density of your page. It should not exceed more than
5%.for eg; If there are 100 words in the content of your page, than a keyword
should not appear more than 5 times. There are plenty of tools provided on the
internet to check the keyword density of your page.
3. Design your site for visitors and search engines:- Make use of ALT
tags in your images. Take the help of the tools provided on the net to design
your site. Avoid the use of frames, flash, and JavaScript and also avoid
unnecessary html coding. Always take the views of your friends about your site.
Ask them if they would visit again to your site. What more can be added to make
visitor friendly.
4. Change your content regularly:- Search engines like the site that change
their content regularly and maintain a unique content. Make sure that your site
maintains a unique content which, is not found on other sites.
5. Backlinks: - When a site links back to yours, it is known as
backlink. Which plays a important role in Search engine algorithm. Include your
keywords in the text of the links, so that it carries weight when a search
engine crawls it. Backlinks from good PR (page rank) page will carry PR to your
page.
For getting back links, following methods have been using in Search
Engine Optimization.

Social networks have had giant growth spurts over the past couple of
years, and it seems there's one for everyone: from dogs to moms to book-worms
to shoppers. Social networks, I think, more than anything give people a place
to belong and to hang out. Because of the drastic growth, popularity and craze
these days, I created a list for people who have their odd MySpace or Bebo
profiles but would like to seek further and discover new ones.
Inbound links, usually referred to as IBLs or backlinks are essential
if a Website is to become popular and rise to the top of the SERPS (Search
engine results pages), and over time, a site with plenty of quality content
will naturally get linked to by related sites. This is all well and good, but
if you are in a hurry to build Web traffic (and who isn’t?) it is useful
to know that there are some things we can do to speed things along.
Before embarking on your link building strategy be aware that some of these
methods are open to abuse which could have a negative effect or even get your
site banned, so please excercise some common sense and only submit your
site’s link when it is relevant and reasonable to do so.
So without further ado, here are my 10 tips for obtaining search engine
friendly outside links:
1 - Find online forums related to your site and become part of the community
(along with a suitable signature that links to your site).
2 - Add comments to blogs with a link to related content on your Website.
3 - Submit on-topic articles to article directories and include your link in
the author bio.
4 - Submit your link to the many free online directory sites.
5 - Add your comments to a guestbook and include your url.
6 - Email the webmaster of a related site and ask to trade links.
7 - Offer to provide some content for another site in return for a link back.
8 - If you have an eBay account, create an “about me” page and
include a link to your Website.
9 - Program a useful tool or script that Webmasters will happily add to their
sites.
10 - Create compelling and perhaps even controversial content on your Website
that people will want to link to.
Of all of the above tips, numbers 7 and 10 are by far the best for an ethical
and long term link building strategy, but don’t ruile out the others for
some quick link building. Overall; with time and experimentation you will find
that by building a quality site with interesting content the links to your site
will develop all by themselves!
An RSS (Rich Site Summary) feed is an XML
file used to describe the contents of your website. As your website content
changes, your RSS feed changes. Other computer systems, known as 'aggregators'
or 'harvesters', read your RSS feed everyt once in a while. If you have
provided new information, the aggregator takes that information and sends it to
readers around the world. Thus information about your site's contents is
'syndicated', that is, rebroadcast to a much larger audience.
Step One:
Getting Ready
Notepad: an RSS
file is a plain text file. This means it can be created with any ordinary text
editor. Windows Notepad will do the job. You can also use Wordpad or even
MS-Word. But you will have to be sure to save your file as plain text. Any
formatting breaks the RSS file. Save in plain text only. I prefer to use a text
editor called NoteTab. It is a plain text editor and never surprises me with
unexpected formatting. http://www.notetab.com
In Linux I use Bluefish. http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/
The server: if
you have a website, you have a server. The server is where your website is
located. You need to be able to load files to your server. If you can put your
home page on your server, you will use exactly the same process for your RSS
file.
The beer: get a
beer from your fridge or buy one from your local store. Open the beer.
Step Two: Find a
Template
The easiest way
to create an RSS file is to copy someone else's. You don't need to worry about
this; you will be replacing all of their content, and the format of the file is
freely licensed for use by anyone. Here is a short, simple template file you
can use:
(Copy everything
below this line, but not including this line)

OK, here's where we stand. I have no email into

It also means that

failing...). Additionally, all scheduled processes have
terminated, which means that Edu_RSS will be updated
manually. I have no tech support until at least tomorrow,
so it looks like we'll be limping along like this for a
bit. Again, please note, email sent to me at downes.ca is

(Stop copying at
this line. Do not copy this line.)
Take the text
you have just copied and paste it into your text editor. Save this as a new
file called (say) mysite.rss - you can call your saved file anything you want,
but it is a lot easier if you indicate the name of your site and use .rss as an
extension, just so people can tell by looking at the title what your file does.
Remember to save the file in plain text format. Take a sip of the beer. You've
earned it.
Step Three:
Defining Your Channel
Now look at the
file you have just copied into your text editor. Near the top, notice that
there is a line that says
. The information following this tag,
and above the tag that says
, will be where you describe your
website as a whole.
You need to
enter four pieces of information. The information goes between the tags, where
information about my site is currently located. Delete the information about my
site and type in the information about your site. Specifically:
title: this is the title of your site
link: this is the URL to the home page of your
site
description: this is a short description of your
site
language: this is the language your site is
written in (you need to use the official format for this, so if your site in
English, just leave this line the way it is)
You only need to
create this part once. You can change it any time you want, but you do not have
to. Once this part is done, therefore, it is done forever. Take a sip of your
beer. You've earned it.
Step Four: Your
Image
This part of
your RSS file is optional; you don't have to add an image if you don't want to.
Your image will be used by some aggregators to provide some visual identity to
your RSS feed.
You will need to
create an image first. Use any image editor (I use PaintShop Pro - http://www.paintshoppro.com/ ). Your
image should be very small: my image is 90 pixels wide by 36 inches deep. You
can either create a new image for your site image or do as I did: use PaintShop
Pro to capture a bit of the site that looks nice, then reduce it in size.
You can put your
image anywhere you want, but I recommend uploading it to the same directory as
your RSS file.
Then describe
your image in just the same way you described your channel: by replacing my
text and using your own.
title: the title of your image, usually the title of your website. This is
often used as an image 'alt' tag.
url: the location of your image on the web. Use
the FULL url, including the http
link: the URL people are sent to if they click
on your image. This is usually the same URL as your channel link URL
width: the width of your image, in pixels
height: the height of your image, in pixels
As with the
channel tag, once you've done this step once, you never have to do it again.
This was a long step, so take a couple of sips of beer.
Step Five:
Defining Your Links
Your site may
contain one or more articles you want readers to read. This is the part that
changes from time to time. For example, Technology Source publishes a set of
eight or so articles every two months. So every two months, you need to change
this list, to reflect the current contents of Technology Source.
Each article is
described by an
tag. In the example above, I have included two
items. You can see that the description for each starts at the
tag
and ends with the
tag.
In between the
item tags are some tags containing information about the article. To create
information about an article, remove the information about my articles, and
replace it with your own. If you have more than two articles, copy an article
tag (everything between and , including these tags) and paste it below the
second item, and above the
tag. Then enter your content:
title: this is the title of the article
link: this is the URL of the article itself
description: this is a short summary of the
article. Note that I use description to include information about the author
and the date.
Create an item
for each article. Then save your file and have a sip of your beer.
Step Six: Escape
Characters
Now we come to
the trickiest part of creating an RSS file.
An RSS file is
an XML file. Some characters are illegal in XML. So you have to 'escape' them,
that is, insert a text string in their place. Here is the list I use (not all
of these are strictly required, but using this full list ensures maximum
safety).
" - change every full quote to "
- For example: He shouted, "Fire!"
becomes, He shouted, "Fire!"
' - change every apostraphe to '
- For example: It's his bike. becomes
It's his bike.
> - change every 'greater than' character to > - but DO NOT change
them in the tags.
- For example,
am > three
feet tall
becomes
I am > three
feet tall

< - change every 'less than' character tag to < - but DO NOT change
them in the tags

five dollars

Step Seven: Uploading Your File
Upload your file to your web server. It is best to put it in the same directory
as your home page, though you could place it anywhere you want.
You now have a working RSS feed. Congratulations. Have another sip of beer.
Step Eight: Validating Your RSS File
Strictly speaking, this step is optional, but it is strongly recommended since
it's easy to make a mistake on step six.
To validate your RSS file, go to an RSS validator on the Web and enter the full
URL of your RSS file into the form. Click the button. If there are any errors,
the validator will tell you about them. Otherwise, it will validate your file.
If your feed is valid, have a sip of your beer. Otherwise, correct the error
and try again.
Step Nine: Advertising Your Feed
You need to tell people that your feed exists. They are not (necessarily) going
to find it through Google. There are two major ways to do this.
First, add an XML button to your home page. An XML button is a little organge
image that links to your RSS file. You've probably seen them on other web
pages. Get a copy of the image (one is located at http://www.downes.ca/images/xml.gif
) and upload it to your website. Then place the image, with a link, on your home
page. For example, place the following code on your home page:
Second, you can submit your site's RSS feed URL to various aggregators. This
will tell them to start checking your RSS feed for updates. Here are some
aggregators:
Finish your beer. You're done. Don't forget to recycle the bottle.
Note: these are instructions for creating a basic RSS feed. The RSS standard
can be extended in a variety of ways. But this is a good starting point: your
feed will be fully functional, and most important, it will work. Get to know
and love your feed. After a time, you may want to look at the world of RSS 1.0 and
RSS 2.0 and the various ways to add more information. When you add
functionality, you will use the same process: find a template, apply the rules,
and validate. But give it time. Be comfortable, then move on.

This means that both the group's email address and the group home page
location have changed.
The group email address:
SEO-World-FOR-YOU@yahoogroups.com
The group home page location:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SEO-World-FOR-YOU
If you have links which point to this group or an address book entry
for the group, you should update them, as the old addresses will no
longer work.
