They are indeed a great sounding speaker, I like the sound it suits me, lots of low end detail and all the way up so much layering. Suspect a lot of that is down to the Single ended 845 Amps, I replaced all the tubes used Philips 6SJ7WGTs, Svetlana 6L6GCs and Shuguang replica Amperex 845B, they all made a bit difference. You can find the amp on ebay but it is very expensive now, the Chinese caught on to the fact they were under pricing there equipment much of it is high end, uses mil spec resistors. At some point I need to go inside the amp and replace the coupling caps, got some Obligato capacitors they look the business and was told to get them.
I can tell you that there are 3 amplifiers of the same design as mine within 10kilometres of my house. They are made by a Mr Liang weighing in at about 50kgs. The transformers are huge and is uses fixed bias as well which I like as it means I can adjust the bias as the tubes age. Oh and they act like a room heater you can feel the heat coming off them from a metre or two away. Good for those autumn mornings for taking the chill off the room when the central heating would be too much.
As for could the system do with a sub bass not sure, sometimes you think yes and other times not. I think it boils down to the source material, not so much the source but if there is no bass in the sound source at that moment then it does not over blow the sound but the whole thing gels together for me, top, bottom, pace, rhythm and overall dynamics are excellent.
I have heard some great speakers in my time Quad ESL63s and Magneplanar SMGa as well, the SMGs worked well with valved audio but did not work for me with EAR but were fine with BEARD but the BEARD was like 1/3rd of the power rating...go figure the EAR should have been driving those speakers better but must have been an impedance mis-match that is what I think anyhow.
The great thing about these Dynastatics with the shackmans is although they are a large speaker (as in footprint) they are no where near as large as most Quads or for that matter the B & W DM70s.

Hi Steven.
You do have one of the best bass drivers ever available. The Richard
Allan is outstanding.
You are right in saying that someone having problems with his
electrostatic loudspeakers will possibly have to need to adjust his
overall equipment.
But that is mainly true only for a very small numbers of electrostatic
loudspeakers.
Yours, the Shackman MHT85, have the advantage of a being "sealed" by
a multiple isolation layer solution (a great idea and realization of
Alex Shackman ), shielding the diaphragm from the stators voltages and
from environmental influencies, like dust, smoke and wet air.
The only other speaker achieving this "everlasting" performance are
the Quads, they have a dust cover as well, but that is mechanically
very far from being the ultimate solution.
The Quads have a "glue" problem. Despite being engineered at the very
top level of that time and of even of today. But they begin to loose
its bonding status at about ten years age.
So in a case like this, it is not at all "playing around" with the
ESLs. It is a necessity, which you, as an owner of the Shackman
tweeters do not have. A similar problem exists with with the
Bowers&Wilkins DM70. The diaphragm of the ESL tweeter's diaphragm
looses its conductivity.
Here again the Shackman has a great advantage. The diaphragm does not
have and does not need any kind coating. It has an ideally high
conductivity by itself.
So be glad with your Shackman speakers and have a lot of happy
listening hours.
And keep us on track concerning your tube amplifiers. Where are they
available?

9 x 6 " Shackman. They can sound lean but then again when they need
to they kick ass with the bass, they do and with layering as well of
all instruments from the bottom up. I was listening to the Antal
Dorati Mercury Living Presecence CD of the 1812 with the live cannons.
I thought I was in the presence of the real cannons...sounded
stunning. Especially with the 845 amp you could hear the crack of the
gunpowder followed by the noise of the shot leaving the barrel and as
for Wellingtons victory which is on the cd as well using period
weapons yet again, sounded like the real thing to me.

a phono amp or from cd and the other input being from the dvd/cable/tv
box. I listen to my amps and the speakers all day if I am sat at home
like today listening to the tv or the radio. I like the sound of my
system and there in lies the issue. I would leave well alone and not
fiddle with them at all my only issue might be with the cabinets and
that is the only thing I would change given a choice.
