Dear SMS member,
Just a brief reminder that there will be no SMS presentation this
week, on Friday 27 November 2009 due to the Hari Raya Haji holiday.
SMS wishes everyone happy holidays.
In this seminar, we shall demonstrate and provide you with free
encryption software that can keep your confidential data encrypted. We
shall demonstrate 2 security programs namely TrueCrypt and
PasswordSafe.
TrueCrypt is an automatic on-the-fly encryption. That means it is
transparent to all your Windows applications. After you login, an
encrypted volume is opened and you can access this encrypted volume just
like another drive. You can also put that volume on a thumb drive. After
you logout or plugged out the thumb drive, the data remains encrypted. If
you have any confidential videos, photos or document in it, it is not
accessible by anyone else. If you send your PC for repair, the repair man
cannot see those information. There are some security issues though and
we shall discuss it in the seminar, so make sure you turn up. You may
never know what you missed.
PasswordSafe is a program that allows you to keep your passwords
stored in an electronic file. Although you can save your passwords in an
encrypted Word document or in a TrueCrypt volume, both these methods have
security weaknesses. PasswordSafe is designed to overcome these
weaknesses. We shall explain in detail these weaknesses. Miss it and you
will regret it.
Anti-virus Write-protected thumb drive can protect you from viruses but you have
to follow some procedures to minimise risks. In this demo, we shall
demonstrate a mock up virus infection so that you have an idea of how a
typical virus can infect your system. Knowing how a virus can spread will
make you more vigilant. Miss this seminar and you may spend days removing
a virus and probably without success.
Those present who buy thumb drives from SMS on this faithful Friday
only, shall be awarded with $5 from my pocket. That means you pay $25
and I will pay for you the other $5. There is no limit to the number of
drives you can buy, just that it is limited by stock.
SMS Projects I was considering embarking on 2 projects which I wish to discuss in
this seminar. One of the project is to provide basic computer training
with hands on practice. This is a chargeable course and the profit shall
be divided with 20% to SMS and the rest to all helpers and trainers. You
may not earn much but this is towards public service and promotion of
SMS.
The second project is to provide a national basic computer literacy test
for Primary 6 pupils. Schools pay a fee for their students to take this
test. Results shall be graded and made known to the schools. Top
performers shall be awarded. All helpers will be paid from the 80% profit
with 20% contributing to SMS. As this is also a public service, there may
not be any profit left and this project may be very successful or fail
miserably. Helpers for these 2 projects are encouraged to come
forward.

<< QUOTE >>
"Trading for a Living," is one of the best-selling and most highly
recommended books on trading ever published. It is written by Dr Alexander
Elder, a world-famous psychiatrist, market analyst, teacher, trader and
speaker at trading conferences and, in my opinion, not only valuable reading
for new traders and market students, but for veterans as well. There's
something of value here for most everyone involved in or interested in the

Topic: (1) Basic Principles and Elements of Design
(2) Design with Adobe Illustrator
Presenter: Mr Tan Boon Tham
Vice-President, SMS
Synopsis:
<< QUOTE >>
1. DESIGN ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES
Learn the practices of good visual design which form the basis of all
intentional visual design strategies and principles that constitute
the broader structural aspects of its composition.
The elements of design are the 'vocabulary' of the design - things
that make up a painting, drawing, design etc. Good or bad - all
design works will contain most of if not all, the seven elements of design.
The Principles of design constitute the broader structural aspects of
its composition - can be thought of as what we do to the elements of
design and also on how we apply the Principles of design determines
how successful we are in creating a work of art.
2. ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR DESIGN TOOL
Illustrator, developed and marketed by Adobe, is a widely recognised
industry standard drawing program that enables users to make
technical illustrations, elaborate drawings, graphics and page
designs for print, the Internet and multimedia.
Its dynamic features and widespread use has made it the standard
vector-based design and illustration program used by graphic
designers, web designers and visual effects professionals all over
the world, to create logos, posters, business card, brochure and
banner. It is popular with web and print designers because it allows
them to edit, scale and manipulate images without reducing image quality.
Adobe Illustrator offers an extensive range of drawing and painting
tools, including typographic control. It is very similar to Photoshop
where it has feathering, inner and outer glow and nondestructive drop shadows.
Demo will be based on the latest version, Illustrator CS4, which has
numerous new features including multiple art boards in a single
document, a "blob brush" that is similar to the brush in Adobe Flash,
and support for transparency in gradients among other features.

Synopsis:
<< QUOTE >>
Other People's Money is a 1991 drama/romantic comedy film starring
Danny DeVito, Penelope Ann Miller and Gregory Peck.
Corporate raider Lawrence Garfield, a.k.a. "Larry the Liquidator"
(Danny DeVito), always looking for the next big score, puts his
sights on New England Wire and Cable, a publicly traded company that
is run by old codger Andrew "Jorgy" Jorgenson (Gregory Peck) and is a
major employer in a small town. Trying to stave off the takeover,
Jorgy hires Kate (Penelope Ann Miller), his stepdaughter, to stall
Larry. Before long, Larry becomes involved in a complicated game of
cat-and-mouse in which he and Kate each struggle to maintain the
upper hand. As he closes in on his goal -- taking over New England
Wire and Cable, which he intends to sell off in parts and shut down
operation - Larry has to decide which he lusts after more: money or Kate.
An exchange of speeches between Garfield and Jorgenson at the
company's shareholders' meeting is the climax of the film. They
provide an accurate and dramatic portrayal of two sides of an
economic concept that Joseph Schumpeter referred to as creative
destruction. In Schumpeter's vision of capitalism, innovative entry
by entrepreneurs was the force that sustained long-term economic
growth, even as it destroyed the value of established companies

Topic: "How do I recover from....?"
Presenter: Mr William Ho
Chairman, Internet SIG, SMS
Synopsis:
<< QUOTE >>
A few days ago, Gmail was down for a few hours. How did this affect you?
The Topic: "How do I recover from....?", the question is
intentionally vague to prompt everyone to fill in the blanks.
Recover from a system hack, a natural disaster, catastrophic
equipment failure, theft etc., etc.,
the answers to these questions are also very broad, however to enact
an effective recovery,
the answers need to be as focused as they can possibly be.
Some of the crucial items to consider
the following areas will be covered in this presentation:
Where is my crucial data being stored offline?
Where is my data being stored? Do I have an off-site contingency?
What is my recovery procedure going to be in case of 'x', where 'x'
is a given failure?
How can I exercise these plans?

Friday 4 September 2009 : Prior to the presentation on "Experience

7.30 pm, our Windows SIG Chairman Mr Hung Khee Hua (HP: 97823157), who is
also the Manager of Ace Computer Services
(http://www.acesservice.com),
will conduct a a quick tour, for interested SMS members, of the shops at
Sim Lim Square from 6.00 pm to 7.20 pm.
Mr Hung is a frequent shopper at SLS and does not own, or earn commission
from, any of the shops mentioned. The details of the quick tour are as
follows:-
6.00 pm (4/9/09) : Meet at ground floor near the ATM machines.
a) shops at 3rd floor - mama and papa shops: nice windows display of
various processors, display adapters. Another shop selling cheap made in
Indonesia notebooks.
b) shops at 4th floor - the back circle lane: mostly repair shops and
selling used items like $2 optical mouse, $1 ps2 keyboard, motherboards,
graphic cards from $20. Shop selling mostly used IBM notebooks and
desktops.
Shops at the front circle lane selling mostly laptops: take your pick.
Also you can visit Video Pro: large variety of items. Cheaper but must
pay by cash.
c) shops at 5th floor- Bell Systems must be paying huge rental. They
occupy 3 units. My favourite haunt. Saw $60 HP 17" CRT here.
Upgraded my customers' notebooks here - can try out the ram first.
Laser Distributors - another place I go.
And don't forget to visit Mediapro next door.
At this floor, there is Bizgram and Best Bargain. The brothers running
Bizgram were featured in Straits Times. Best Bargain good for memory
cards and thumb drives: I like their price list as it is in A3 and the
back page is blank - can use it to write.
d) shops at 6th floor. We go see a back lane shop again. To see where to
get cheaper vga, usb cables and more cables.
Another shop here (Onasta) sells used laptops. They also have a unit at
4th floor.
Another shop at this level is where I buy Kodak dvd disks. Oh, there is a
camera shop too.
Tour ends at 7.20 pm at our 6th floor venue for the evening's
presentation.

Topic: (1) How to build a museum-like photo gallery easily and for free?
(2) Thinking of building an electronic gadget for sale?
Presenter: Mr Lim Beng Cheng
CEO, Hiwire Data & Security Pte Ltd
Synopsis:
<< QUOTE >>
(1)
How to build a museum-like photo gallery easily and for free?
This program is not the one provided by National Heritage Board
(NHB)'s e-Museum and unrelated to it.
It allows you to upload photos into a gallery and users can walk
through the virtual gallery to view the photos. You can also choose
from the many templates available. Your eventual creation can be
saved as a Flash to be uploaded into your web site, saved as a .SCR
screen saver program or as a .EXE executable file.
In this seminar, you will be shown how to install and use this
program as well as how to create Flash, SCR or EXE files.
The program is free, however, you can get it during the seminar from
SMS with a token distribution charge of $2. All collections will go
to SMS funds.
(2)
Thinking of building an electronic gadget for sale?
Once a while, you may have an incredible idea of a new gadget and new
features that you think the whole world will want to buy it. Then
comes the design, testing, PCB fabrication, sourcing for components,
assembling of components and testing. You may also need to design a
casing, moulding, select color and manufacturing.
Eventually, you will need to market it, pay sales people, run a whole
business just to sell that gadget.
How to do it? Can it be done? Is it worth while? Can you become a
millionaire as a result?
Come to this seminar and we shall discuss on all these issues.
As usual, we will try to network with each other so that we can help
to improve each other's business.
See you all there, it's a networking gathering and at least to get to
know each other.

writer, power supply unit and wire up the casing to the
motherboard. We will connect SATA harddisks (no more master/slave to
fiddle about) as well as practise connecting IDE harddisks (master/slave).
Processors fit into various types of sockets. The most common ones
now being socket 775 for Intel processors and AM2 for AMD
processors. You will have the chance to fit in these processors to
their corresponding motherboards and also how to remove them to clean
the heat sink and fan.

Demo on a gadget to save electricity - by Mr Ham Hwee Hoon
Mr Ham will demo a gadget, which he built, to shut down power supply
to the computer and its related accessories such as monitor, modem,
router, etc that share the same power gang.
The purpose is to reduce your electricity usage/ bill.
For example, we could be downloading files that take a few hours and
is estimated to complete around 2 am. We need to sleep and go to
work tomorrow and can't wait till 2 am to shut down the computer and
switch off everything.
Mr Ham will show how to use a third party software or XP in built
timer to shut down the computer at 2.30 am. And then the gadget
will shut down all electrically connected accessories to the same power gang.
The gadget will have two types of interface: ATX power supply or
usb. ATX interface is good for desktop PC, while USB interface is
good for laptop PC.
