Hi all,
The MobileMonday NY committee, Antoine Quint of SVG.org, Scott Weiss
of Usable Products and Dan Appelquist of Vodafone and MobileMonday
London are happy to invite you to the "Rich Mobile Experiences with
SVG" event held in New York City on January 29th.
This event has been set up to provide an exhaustive overview of the
Mobile SVG ecosystem with a strong selection of leaders in the field
-- Sun Microsystems, Qualcomm, Vodafone, Ikivo, Opera, BitFlash and
Beatware -- coming together to present their solutions and visions
around Mobile SVG.
Speakers will update you on everything relevant to this key rich
mobile technology including authoring solutions, deployed and live
services, integration in application platforms (J2ME, Brew, Symbian),
user interfaces design, mobile browsing, etc. A closing panel and Q&A
session, followed by a networking reception, will allow you to take
part in the discussion and get answers to real-world problems related
to creating rich mobile experiences with SVG.
The main event will run from 3pm to 8pm, followed by the reception,
on Monday January 29th at the Samsung Experience in the Time Warner
Center near Central Park. Registration is completely free and already
open on our Upcoming.org page.
http://upcoming.org/event/135061/
There is limited seating, so take the time to register now. Look out
for a complete event program on this page in the coming days. Hoping
to see you in New York on the 29th,
The "Rich Mobile Experiences with SVG" Event Team
As usual we agree on most points. I
suspect that the Flash Lite team, which has very ambitious targets, will be in
favor or removing any air out of SVG’s wings, but I can be wrong. Time
will tell.
I am not concerned with the situation for
the Mobile world, we have authoring and
viewing solutions there. I am more concerned for the desktop.

As I said, I think they will, while there is demand. They sell authoring

license it much for embedding as a component. It makes sense for them to

Right. And it takes effort to remove it and so while there is demand it

this is a product on which they make money, so its different to a free
giveaway on which they loose money.

Yes, thats certainly possible. Given that Illustrator supports a wide
range of export formats I think its unlikely, however that a given one
will be pulled while there is demand, because that might translate to
lost sales.
MV> The other product supporting SVG Tiny (Golive) will likely see

Possibly. GoLive and Dreamweaver aim at pretty different mmarkest.
dreamweaver has always been the 'street HTML' product, ignoring what
standards say in favor of what the currently popular HTML implementatins
do.
GoLive, while it started out as another nested-tables-and-sliced images
product, has moved more to an XML based, standards based and mobile
based product. So I consider it much less likely that they will be
merged, or one dropped and the other promoted, than is the case for say,
Illustrator and Freehand (where I bet Freehand sank like a stone within
minutes of the merger), or the Flash authoring tools from Macromedia
compared to, say, LiveMotion (stone analogy, similarly).
MV> Do you believe Dreamweaver will support a competitor to Flash and
MV> Flash-Lite?
I think Dreamweaver will continue to support whatever the HTML desktop
browsers do and will continue to ignore the standards based and
mobile-based areas.
None of which argues, as you have suggested, that people "rely on"
the
Adobe authoring tools, either for desktop or mobile. They are just one
choice - your company sells a different choice as do yet other
companies. And for the free authoring tools, Inkscape gets better with
every release.
MV> About SVG 1.1 being included with the Flash-Lite viewer, it is worth

I agree that its an option and is there because otherwise they could not
even start to sell the product. People who want mobile Flash get Flash
Lite; people who want mobile SVG go to other places, like Ikivo and
Bitflash, who have track record with the technology.
MV> Besides, SVG 1.1 is way too limited to be useful on a device.
Presumably you mean Tiny 1.1? Its fine for some things - but Tiny 1.2 is
way better agreed.
Summary - Adobe announced they are dropping ASV. No real surprise there.
Better than just leaving it to rot, as it clearly signals to people to
look for a different solution - of which there are several on both
desktop and mobile.

The SVG community has been pushed into
Adobe’s arms for too long and it is time to realize that Adobe is now
focusing its strategy on Flash, not SVG. Suggesting that Adobe will continue to
support SVG in its product line and that it is therefore OK to rely on Adobe to

The next release of Illustrator will
perhaps – only perhaps – support SVG because the next version was
already on its way when the merger between Adobe and Macromedia was made
official. But it is quite plausible that the Flash-Lite team will want it
killed to stop SVG’s progression in the mobile world. The other product
supporting SVG Tiny (Golive) will likely see another release, but should be
merged into Dreamweaver in the near future. Do you believe Dreamweaver will

About SVG 1.1 being included with the
Flash-Lite viewer, it is worth noting that SVG is just an option and that
nobody is using it (to my knowledge). Besides, SVG 1.1 is way too limited to be
useful on a device.

Everyone in the SVG Mobile world is
already moving to SVG-Tiny 1.2, which is not supported by the Adobe Viewer
anyway. Compatibility between SVG 1.1 (supported by Adobe Viewer) and SVG Tiny
1.2 is not that great: event models are different (of course), rendering is
slightly different, etc…
There are several SVG 1.2 viewers already
available for the Mobile world. I suspect we
will see Windows emulations popping out in the near future.

Sara
please could others express there thoughts regarding their
preferences for a logo?
as to my own, read on:
Yesterday Stelt asked me on IRC if I was entering the SVG Logo Contest.
I replied that I rather thought not as I liked the current W3C
graphics logo
as used here http://www.w3.org/Graphics/
which I find humane and homely unlike much technology which can be
hard and cold.
it was suggested that it wasn't interactive, and I agreed that
cowboys.svg has much to commend it, though it isn't a logo.
overnight it occurred to me that as a minimum I would naturally
require a logo to be accessible.
which might for instance mean that for me there - must - be some
visual feedback to tell the user which element in the logo has focus,
there should also be audio, keyboard tabbing, text equivalent and more.
cheers

Hi-
A few months ago, we announced a contest to create a logo for SVG. We got
many great submissions to choose from, and we're really excited! I have set
up a public gallery so you can see all the art we've received thus far.
Please visit:
http://svglogo.com/gallery.html
In order to coordinate with the SVG Open conference, we're now taking
entries through October 1, 2006. We will be announcing the winner on
October 17 at SVG Open.
If any of you didn't have time to submit your logo before, now is the time!
If this is the first you've heard of it, visit the gallery and get inspired.
Spread the word, and send in your logo ideas right away. There are no
limits on how many you can submit, so let your imagination soar.
All logos can be mailed to entries@.... Please include your name
and contact information.
Regards-
Doug

Thanks Jonathan, but,
I was actually hoping for techniques and handsets that run it out of
the box, so nothing to install, just a phone to buy and a URL to visit
or an MMS to receive.
I have created a little thing that might just get (SVG) popular within
a certain top-brand company, where people have above average handsets,
but lack the technical interest+knowledge to install a special viewer.
Anybody able to help me on this viral marketing of SVG scheme?

Doug,
that's a great initiative, however do you need a gallery link?
perhaps an entrants vote?
http://open.bbc.co.uk/reboot/gallery/ gives a great feel for what the
BBC managed to generate for similar prizes.
all entries were moderated before being published.
also you state when the competition ends, but not when the final
decision will be made, this is vitally important, as drift has been
known to occur, in the past.
best wishes

Hi, Folks-
We are pleased to announce the launch of an SVG Logo contest! Visit the
official site for more details on the rules:
http://www.svglogo.com
Several companies who see the power of SVG have banded together to hold a
contest for an SVG logo. This is intended to spread awareness of SVG,
especially among designers and users. You will soon see the winning logo on
Web pages that use SVG, browsers and viewers that support SVG, authoring
tools that export SVG, and even packaging for SVG-enabled mobile devices.
Obviously, the logo must be done in SVG. There are a bunch of great prizes,
including an iPod Video, an SVG-enabled mobile phone, and SVG authoring and
viewing software. So, get creative and get going!

Folks,
I do not have any problem from Internet Explorer to run an online service
written in PHP to generate SVGT content on the fly. Unfortunately, from a
cellphone, the device reboots (not a blue screen but a white fading one).
The same service works in an XHTML page in an <object> tag ?!
Saved locally, the phone renders this SVGT document the right way ?!
Saved on the server, the phone renders this file the right way ?!
It seems that there is something wrong about the header not the document.

Its possible that the binary of the svg player is hard coded to a particular
language and does not react to OS changes. Have you sent mail to Ikivo about
this?

I am developing buttons with multilingual support (swedish, english)
for SVGT. The idea is the
button text should adapt itself according to the locale langauage of
the mobile.
I tested this using systemLanguage feature in switch element as
follows.
<g font-size="25pt">
<switch>
<g systemLanguage="en-UK">
<text x="10" y="30">English.</text>
</g>
<g systemLanguage="sv">
<text x="10" y="30">Svensksa.</text>
</g>
</switch>
</g>
I used OpenWave mobile Simulator V7 who support displaying SVGT
content. Text in the appropriate language is displayed based on the
current language of mobile simulator. It works in IE too. However all
SE K750/K600/V800 only display swedish text even after setting
English as the phone language. Any thoughts!
Is it the problem with Sony Ericsson devices or the SVG player?
Below is a sample file for reference.

[Salmi] Yes! that's what I know. :)
However couple of interesting server solutions are:
Beatware Mobile Server: for generating SVGT and Flash Lite skin
wrappers on live xml data
Turbine Mobile: dynamically generates Flash Lite content by
integrating image, audio, video and database content into Flash SWF
templates.

Again only macromedia sells these players... in contrast to SVGT
(ikivo player, tinyline player etc. etc.)

[Salmi] It does not necessarily means that handset is shipped with FL
player. FL player can be purchased and installed later on by the end
user. Since desktop flash player was freely available and one of the
reason of flash popularity. In contrast flash lite player is not free
(i don't know if macromedia will sell flash lite player to the
manufacturers or give them for free).

[Salmi] No. I tried with Flash Lite 2.0 content on that as well, but
it did not recognize content type. It is because N70 does not have
any pre-installed flash lite player installed on it. I need to buy
one. Otherwise 2.0 player should also render 1.1 content.

[Salmi] They are planning to ship handsets with pre-installed FL 2.0
player in future on some selected Nokia handsets. It seems at this
time, only NTT DoCoMo i-mode handsets are shipped with Flash Lite
embedded in them. For rest of the supported handsets, developers
needs to buy (10$) Flash Lite player 2.0 for their mobiles (for some
Nokia models only).
I tried to give answers to the best of my knowledge but I may be
wrong at some places. I would like to be corrected if it so.

I am thankful for your quick responses. Indeed, information you provided is really helpful to get a bigger picture of SVGT ecosystem. Below are some of my findings regarding Flash Lite 1.1/2.0.
>> 1- Available Flash Lite 1.1 content creation tools, players and server solutions?
Authoring Tools:
FL 1.1:
Macromedia Flash MX Professional 2004 (7.0.1) for Flash Lite 1.1
An update patch (.dll) file needs to be installed to test the FL 1.1 content.
FL 2.0:
Macromedia Flash MX Professional 8 for Flash Lite 1.1/2.0. An update patch needs to be installed to develop flash lite 1.1/2.0 content. Author can select the target profile (1.1/2.0) and view the expected result on a list of emulated devices. These device profiles can be installed as a separate patch to Macromedia Flash MX Professional 8.
Players:
Flash Lite 1.1
Flash Lite 2.0
Developer can purchase FL1.1/2.0 player (10US $ dollars each) against IMEI of the device.
There are 86 different models (mobiles + PDA's) listed on macromedia website. 9 of them support FL 2.0, remaining support FL 1.0/1.1. In comparison SVG is supported by 108 models (svg.org).
Server:
FlashCast is a technolig used to deliver Flash Lite applications to handsets. FlashCast has a client and a server application. FlashCast client is a flash interface which is installed on the mobile to display flash content using flash lite i.e. flash lite 1.1 is runtime of FlashCast client. FlashCast server is cluster of J2EE servers that serve as an intermediary between the FlashCast client application and third-party content providers. It ties content feeds and flash animations with device capabilities and user preferences to offer rich user experience
Add-on to Flash Professional 8 which includes templates, design guidelines, a FlashCast client emulator, and a simulated local FlashCast server system, enabling developers to use a single tool to produce FlashCast mobile applications.
Note: It seems Flash Lite is operational mainly in Japan.
>> Does every new mobile have pre-installed Flash Lite 1.1 player?
I am not sure about this, but I guess not. I tested sample Flash Lite 1.1 & 2.0 content on Nokia N70 (which is supposed to support FL 2.0) but it did not recognize the content type. However same content worked on e.g. SE K600/V800. I think not every new mobile comes equipped with FL 1.1/2.0, but FL 1.1/2.0 player can be downloaded for the models listed on Macromedia website (of course not for free… :).

Its also possible to export SVGT1.1 from Adobe illustrator CS2.
There are a number of other tools for more specialized tasks or where finer control is needed. Because the format is open and documented, a variety of tools can be integrated into a toolchain.

And its worth noting that, the document conversion services Antoine mentioned aside, any standard Web server works out of the box. you don't need to buy a specialized server.
