Hi James,

Yes, it also stops ACDSee, the graphics imaging program.

I'll look around as well.

Thanks Guy - and to you David,

I thought from my initial research that stopping DCOM shouldn't cause a
problem, but I have also experienced now a further problem with an
e-mail prog called Turnpike, so I am launching a thread in the newsgroup
   there.

Incidentally it also happens with Geosatsignal - same error message.

Will dig around a bit more.

   Thanks

   James

Guy, James,

There are a couple of points to make here:

- the only programs of mine which do anything even slightly more than
read/write files and display results are the MSG Data Manager and MSG
Animator which, when running on the same PC, try and communicate so that
the Data Manager notifies the Animator of the end of a cycle for a
particular channel, so that the animation(s) for that channel can be
rebuilt. This is why, when you run the Animator on a different PC, you
need to manually set the update interval to be non-zero, as the messages
are /not/ sent between PCs. I.e. DCOM is /not/ used. These messages are
only sent at the end of a cycle, and GeoSatSignal has no involvement in
the process. That's why I would expect that disabling DCOM should have no
effect.

The other possibility is that one of the components I employ (such as the
directory browser) may need to communicate across the network so that the
full set of available directories is displayed. This is a third-party
component, but it hasn't changed in some time (at least after moving to
Delphi 2009) so if something used to work and now doesn't I would be
inclined to look at what might have changed on the PC - perhaps some
security update or other software update. The fact that other software is
affected as well also points in that direction.

Please let's know the results of your various investigations.

Cheers,
David

Hi Simon,

I'm afraid HRPT Console is a passive tool for processing downloaded HRPT images

Michel,

WXtrack will update its Keplers from CelesTrak - no account is required.

It is the Kepler Manager program which uses Space-Track, and many of us
have not received replies to queries to that site recently.

I hope you are successful in getting a copy of the NASA control centre
map.

Hi Simon,

I am using my Time-Step HRPT system in a fully automated way (for what I need it
to do) your needs maybe different from mine but here is how I have mine setup.

You will need:
The Time-Step Hardware
HRPT Reader - Fully registered
Apache2 - Depending on what you want to do.
Microsoft Windows

Firstly I am going to assume you have the Time-Step software setup automatically
dumping the HRP files into a directory and that you have HRPT reader correctly
setup, as per your post.

What you now need to do is to create a new scheduled task in Windows.

This can be found in:

START-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Scheduled Tasks

Got to File-->New-->Scheduled Task

and call it whatever you want.

Right Click on it and Select Properties.

In the run box select browse to and select the ReadHRPT.exe file.

The "start in" and "comments" section can be left blank for now.

Make sure run only if logged on is ticked - I have had problems without this
ticked. It also makes sure these tasks run when you are actually logged into the
machine and not someone else.

Now comes the tricky bit.

You need to add comments onto the end of the run box so HRPT reader knows where
the files are and what to do with them.

For this example I am going to use NOAA 18 and the standard RGB 124 colour
scheme for processing

"C:\Documents and Settings\Mark Edwards\Desktop\HRPTReader\ReadHRPT.exe"
C:\WinHRPT\NOAA18*.* -output:C:\WinHRPT\JPGS\NOAA18 -rgbR1G2B4:corr.jpg
-noboundaries -close -min

Above you can see what I have in my run box for the scheduled task.

The first part is the location of my ReadHRPT.exe file. Which is shown in " ".

The next part is the location and the name of the file I want HRPT Reader to
process. In this example it is going to look for the most recent NOAA18 HRP file
which is located in C:\WinHRPT - where I keep my HRP files.

The -output command tells HRPT Reader where to put the processed file and what
to call it. In this example when the processing is done it is going to place the
file into C:\WinHRPT\JPGS and call it NOAA18-rgb-corrected.jpg.

-rgbR1G2B4:corr.jpg Tells HRPT Reader how to process the HRP file. -rgb will
make HRPT Reader process the HRP file into a Red Green Blue image using whatever
channels you want for the associated colour. In this case Red is 1 Green 2 Blue
4. Corr corrects the image and .jpg tells it to save the file as a Jpeg however
bmp can be used if desired but it takes more space. However if you prefer false
colour images to RGBs just specify -fc:corr.jpg instead.

-noboundaries processes the image with no country boundaries if you do want the
boundaries be sure to update the keps regularly and delete this entry out the
run box.

-close will close HRPT reader when done

-min will run the program minimised so when it starts it doesn't open full
screen.

All these options that I have listed above as well as others that can be used
which I haven't mentioned can be found in the HRPT Reader Help file under
command line interface.

Now that's done you need to specify how often and when Windows is to run this
task. Click on the Schedule tab at the top.

Now for this to work properly you need to specify a time window you want the
task to run so it captures the NOAA 18 pass you want. HRPT reader will only
capture the most recent HRP file of NOAA18 in this example. So timing the task
for the pass you want is essential. Leaving the task continually running will
result with you ending up with the most Westerly pass of the afternoon or
morning.

The reason I have my system setup like this is so that when ever someone clicks
for a satellite image on my website it gives the best and most recent pass for
that satellite.

You will need to do some trial and error here and work out at what times
(roughly) you get the best pass you want to process. In this example I am going
to assume you are in the UK.

I can also provide you with the time windows I have worked out for the highest
pass of the other main NOAA satellites in the UK should you wish. But for NOAA
18 in the afternoon start the task for 1300hrs and let it run for 2 hours at 15
minute intervals. I like to use 2 hour windows as it gives a good margin and the
satellite takes 1:30 before its next closest pass. This way you aren't running
the task continually and hogging your CPU.

To do this, schedule the task for daily and the start time for 1300. Now click
on advanced. Select Repeat task and select 15 Minutes. Check the Duration Radio
button and set 2 Hours 0 Minutes. Click ok and make sure schedule task every 1
day is ticked.

Now click ok and attempt to run the Task if all goes well HRPT reader will load
and you should see a new JPG file in the directory you chose with the name you
chose.

This process can be used for any NOAA or FY-1D satellite. You just need to
change the parameters and options around a bit. If required I can post examples
I have for all day/night passes and False Colour / RGB processes for the tasks I
have running for NOAA 15,17,18,19 and FY-1D. I have 17 scheduled tasks in total!
I also use FC during daylight passes and RGB for night passes. This method also
works best on a computer dedicated for HRPT image reception, as trying to work
on this computer when this processing occurs can be annoying.

Now where you want to go is up to you with regards to your website. If you have
a broadband connection that's stable, always on, has a static IP address and
also has a good upload speed you can self host the files, in which case you will
require Apache.

Or you can create an ftp batch job to upload them to your web space. I have
experience in both if you need help.

I also have my system setup so that at midnight each day a scheduled task runs
that copies the HRP files over to an archival directory on a separate disk. I
also have it setup to remove the archived HRP files that are over 60 days old,
thanks to David's neat Trim-Tree app.

Let me know how you get on.

I apologise for this lengthy post but I hope people find it of some use.

To the other members, this is the simplest and easiest method I could work out
of doing this, if you have a better method or suggestion I would be very
grateful to hear it.

Cheers

Mark

I am getting a "List out of Bounds Error (-1)" when using Wxtracks to track
AO-51 and no other satellite. Also, the next pass information states "AOS: not
available" for AO-51, all other satellites that I've checked show the next pass
information. Right clicking on AO-51 in the display and selecting next pass
results in tracking jumping to manual and the next satellite in the list becomes
active.
I've updated to the latest release 3.8.2.893 and updated the keps which on
inspection appear to be OK. I am using a registered version. I've searched the
message history and can find plenty of references to the list out of bounds
problems but not this particular problem. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Nigel

Nigel,

I'm just back from several days away, and in catch-up mode. It may be a
day or two before I can check this. AOS not available usually means that
the satellite appears to have a near geostationary orbit, so what is the
AO-51 orbit? If you have another satellite included, does the error go
away - as a work-round?

Echo (AO-51) is in a low earth orbit and not geostationary. I've reloaded
the keps several times, even cut and pasted them from the ARRL website but
no luck. The program displays and tracks AO-51 OK, however the next pass box
displays the "AOS: not available" message. Other LEO sats such as the ISS,
Dove, HAMSAT (AO-52) all show their next pass info OK. Since reloading the
keps and updating to the latest version I am no longer getting the "List out
of bounds error".

Frustrating, there is probably a corruption somewhere in the data or files.

The fix is not urgent as I can use the software as is, but would like to get
it working properly

Nigel,

WXtrack works correctly here, showing next pass time for AO-51. Here are
the Keplers I used:

I have noticed recently that the MTSAT images displayed via MSGData Manager have
coastline and grid well away from the identifiable image features. I have
tried, but am unable to find, any way of changing the gridding, only an option
to have none for either coastline and grid. On my setup, I am unable to remove
the coastline, selecting none makes no difference. However, the grid can be
switched off and on using the none option.
I have tried to install the latest Beta for MSGDataManager, but it will not run,
as it is unable to find 'jpeg8support.dll'. I checked the RunTime library on
Satsignal website, but it does not seem to have been updated recently.

I apologise if this has already been discussed on the group, and I missed it.

Bernard, since November 15th there has been a problem with MTSAT-1R
dissemination.
For the moment JMA are using MTSAT-2 which is 5° further east.
I suspect the data has not been corrected to the MTSAT-1R location.

Douglas.

Bernard,

Douglas has commented on the gridding.

For the 'jpeg8support.dll' issue, please install the current version
before installing any beta:

First:
   http://www.satsignal.eu/software/msg_dm.htm#bundle

Then:
   http://www.satsignal.eu/software/beta.htm

Many thanks David.

Do you know why I am unable to turn off the coastline on my MTSAT images on
MSGDM. I can toggle the grid with the 'none' option, but the coastline refuses
to go when 'none' is selected.?

   Bernard,

Douglas has commented on the gridding.

For the 'jpeg8support.dll' issue, please install the current version
   before installing any beta:

   First:
   http://www.satsignal.eu/software/msg_dm.htm#bundle

   Then:
   http://www.satsignal.eu/software/beta.htm

Is this in the saved images, such as 200911172300-mt1-ir.jpg, or in the
Detail Images? Where are you selecting the "none" option? As far as I
can recall, functionality in this area has not changed for some time.

Than ks David. I am sorry I did not give a complete description of the
overlay/grid problem.

Here is the sequence :
MSG DatMan
World-FSD tab
MTSAT-1R tab
left click on image
right click for menu
Menu items..Boundary overlay..set to none
Grid overlay..set to none.

The grid clears. The boundary/coastlines do not clear

This is not normally a problem, but with the replacement sat and misaligned
images, it has become one.

I see what you mean about the image alignment, Bernard, crikey!

If you are using a land-sea LUT, perhaps you are getting the coastline
from that. Try no LUT. The boundaries do disappear here.

Hi folks,
Just to add to the knowledge pile, I do not have this problem and
the reason must be that I do not have countries.dat in the directory, so
I cannot get any boundaries which rely on this file. I don't think the
LUTs have any boundaries or I would have seen them.

Best regards - Alan

David

Thanks for the feedback.

I have loaded the current version of Wxtracks to my laptop and verified that
the software runs OK on that machine which means the problem is specific to
my desktop a relatively new 2 Core Quad running at 2.33GHz with 2GB of RAM.

To try and clear up the problem I carried out a complete re-install
including the run time libraries. There does not appear to be a specific
install/uninstall routine for the program? I deleted the original program
and then re-installed it by extracting from the downloaded file. However
this does not remove the user specific information (location, etc) which
re-initialises when the new install is run and the problem persists with no
AOS for AO-51. I assume there is a corruption in the retained data, where is
this held and any thoughts on how to re-install or remove this data.

Thanks, Nigel

Nigel,

WXtrack works correctly here, showing next pass time for AO-51. Here are
the Keplers I used:

AMSAT ECHO

OK, it should be particularly related to the processor.

Correct, the program dates from times when people wanted to know what
every file was for, rather than simply double-clicking Setup.exe .....

Nigel,

Close all copies of WXtrack you may have running. Using the registry
editor (disclaimer: take care!) rename the registry key:

   HKCU\Software\David J Taylor\WXtrack

to:

   HKCU\Software\David J Taylor\WXtrack-old

HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER

or if you are feeling particularly brave delete the key altogether. This
will restore the factory settings. Please let me know if the problem
persists.
