I had an enquiry that I can't answer: does SatSignal run on a Cyrix P150+
processor?

I've tested down to a plain old Pentium 75 and it's OK, but I don't have any
access to a Cyrix processor to try it.

I'm not optimistic, does anyone know?

Thanks,

David

David,

I have a Cyrix 6x86 233 MHz computer (my 2nd PC) which is 3 years old.

It runs Satsignal faultmessly.

Thanks for that, Les. I don't know, though, if that would cover the P150+
which sounds like an older processor. Does the newest version of SatSignal
(with the Intel JPEG library) work as well?

Thanks

Folks, I don't intend to make this a daily announcement, or even that
everyone should download and test this software, but _if you are
interested_, today's updates are:

   http://www.david-taylor.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/software/beta.htm

SatSignal V3.6.6.260 - slightly enhanced Resurs O1-N4 picture, unified
output file creator labels, batch MRU history increase, restore "Reduce
Width" progress display

WXtrack V2.6.6.238 - show satellite with yellow marker when in sunlight,
display past history orbit ground tracks in grey, tie ground track display
duration to orbital period, finer steps in ground track prediction around
terminator.

The only thing I'd really like comments on is the "show satellite is
illuminated" in WXtrack.

Thanks,
David

Nice one David.
Demonstrates very clearly the limited time available to see a low orbit sat.
(ex. ISS) requiring a dark sky but with sun recently set.
Looking forward to trying it out in 3 weeks or so when ISS comes back into
that orbital favour for the UK (MIR has just left it).

Douglas.

PS. Saw your other mail re beta just as I was about to send. You're
allowed one mistake in the year !!!! (My cheeks are bulging !).

Thanks David.

Folks,

I'm now happy that changes I made to remove the memory leak first discovered
by Sergio Monteiro are working correctly, so you will find release V3.6.6 of
SatSignal at:

   http://www.david-taylor.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/software/satsignal.htm

There are a few minor improvements as well as fixing the leak. The effect
of the memory leak would have been to make repeated processing (without
exiting and reloading the program) slower and slower. All the memory was
eventually returned to the system. I would recommend that you upgrade to
the newer version.

For the programmers amongst you these were the problems: in one place I had
failed to call the ancestor's Destroy method in an object's Destroy method,
and elsewhere I repeatedly got memory (for the display of auto-correlation
values) whilst failing to returning any existing allocation! Oops!

Many thanks to Sergio for pointing out the problem.

Peter,

No-one else has reported this, but it's possible that the new text stored in
the JPEG isn't recognised by older programs. At least you can read the
picture OK, yes?

Paint Shop pro 6 and 7 seem OK. What program are you using?

BTW: attachments aren't allowed in this mailing list.

I use LViewPro it is indeed a somewhat older version.
The picture is OK indeed , it's just annoying that I have to click 'NO' each

Hello David

If i save a JPEG or a BMP image of top cloud temperature with versus

image (which is beautifull, but not colored).

Have you any explanation ?

SatSignal will only read 8-bit greyscale images. Whilst it will accept JPEG
images, it converts them to greyscale. Bear in mind that once you have
converted to JPEG you have lost and accuracy of grey-levels in the image,
such as would be required for temperature measurement.

The function is intended for re-processing 2-channel NOAA images, which
would normally be saved as BMP or PNG to retain accuracy.

Once the image is saved, why would you want to reload it? Perhaps I
_should_ be retaining colour!!!

Peter,

I looked in detail at the binary JPEG file produced by the Intel JPEG
Library today, and whilst if I make no attempt to add my own comment the
output is correct, when I do add my own comment (simply by setting a pointer
and a length field) the library seems to omit the tag saying it is a JPEG
comment and the length field from the JPEG file. It still outputs the
comment, though!

I have reported the problem to Intel, and the current beta (V3.6.8.262)
avoids the problem by not attempting to add a comment to the file.

There's also a new beta of WXtrack with improved geostationary satellite
display - please see the Web site for more details.

Many thanks for reporting this this problem.

Hello David and the group,

First, congratulations for your very fine work and frequents updates.
I have downloaded the ETOPO5.ZIP file and put the unzipped file in the
WXTrack directory but I have no change in the "Ground Path" or "Flight" map.
In the "World Map Data" help, you say about Etopo5.elev. This extension
.elev has four letters and in the zip file there is no extension at all.
Please, can you give me some explanations.

Best regards to all from Pierre (F6IDT)

The benefit of this add'l file can be seen for example when you select the zoom
radio button under the "Ground Path" tab. As an experiment, remove the file
etopo5.elev to a temporary directory ensuring no copy is present in the wxtrack
directory. Generate a pass (try NOAA 12 at 00:24:00 UTC on 12/5/00) then click
on the "Make Picture" button on the "World Map" tab which will bring you to the
"Ground Path" tab. Select a duration of say 15 min. North and click "Make
Picture". The resulting picture will look as it should but now select the radio
zoom button - notice how the image is heavy pixelated. With Etopo5.elev in the
directory now repeat the same steps and you should see a detailed high
resolution image. Hope this helps ...

Pierre,

Thanks for the congratulations - but you know that most of the ideas come
from the users - not me!

You should certainly notice a difference on those tabs, although not on the
World Map tab. These is no need to rename the file, the program will work
with either etopo5.elev or just etopo5. (My spelling checker wanted to call
it etopo5.elves!) I suggest you check the unzipped file size which should
be:

18662400 bytes if the file was from
   http://edcwww.cr.usgs.gov/Webglis/glisbin/guide.pl/glis/hyper/guide/etopo5
or:
18666720 bytes if the file was from
   www.geol.binghamton.edu/faculty/jones/etopo5.zip

To help confirm that the program is recognising the topography file
correctly, in the current beta V2.6.8.251 I have added a one-line note at
the bottom of the Choose File Paths panel (lower left) showing the location
the program detected for the ETOPO5 file. If the file is not found, the
message "Topography colours from World Map background" this means that the
file has not been recognised. You can get the beta from this address, but
hang onto your existing version just in case!

   http://www.satsignal.net   Software => Beta versions

Be aware that this version tries to optimise drawing further by only
plotting the gridlines once. If I have this wrong, and no gridlines appear,
please let me know!

Thanks to Craig Orban for his explanation of how to check that the
additional topography data is actually being used.

David
