Re: [Scrum-India] Approach for Scrum implementation

Pooja,

There is no one cookie-cutter method that one can prescribe to enable your organization's transition. I am sure this group can offer several suggestions and you can do your due diligence to apply each of them with a grain of salt coz its all situational and context based. That said, here are some guidelines.

-- You can approach the management by offering them to utilize Scrum for a month (two 15 day sprints or 4 week sprints) on a single team. If at all possible, try utilizing Scrum on a team that is having trouble delivering software.
-- If the above is a possibility, what is critical to a successful implementation is the understanding of Scrum process.  The team of people who will be working with in and interacting with this team should have a decent understanding of what, how and why now? Most failures happen primarily because of a lack of understanding when you run into roadblocks. Have someone handy to guide you who is well versed with the process and if budget allows, get trained.
-- Understand who does what. Understand what Product Manager does, Scrum Master does, what does team own and deliver on, how traditional Software Dev Managers fit in, what happens to Project Managers.
-- Establish ground rules. If there aren't any rules and if the goal is not clear, chaos reign.

Regarding benefits and metrics at a management level, there are several different ones and can get quite specific. Some of the basic ones that can presented as benefits are customer value delivery, quality of the software, risk management. IMHO, metrics are cool but should be done with a purpose. Metrics should be more like a score than a statistic. It should be used to drive the team towards rather than used to evaluate their performance. So, use it carefully coz it can quickly turn into a double edged sword.

Regarding case studies and videos, infoQ.com offers a bunch, youtube has several. I am sure others with in Indian context have published white papers that you can find. Xebia comes to my mind.

If you need someone to talk it with, let the group know. Additionally, you can detail any questions here and we'll be happy to answer.

TC,
Suren

Hi,
Please share your experience/thoughts on following:
What should be the approach/step by step method if a company wants to transition from Traditional dev to Scrum. Any case study? What challenges, best practices, etc. Why Scrum, benefits, metrics (productivyt/quality improvement), what could be the pay back time, advantages over traditional, etc. Here I am thinking of a scenario "why and how a traditional dev based company can transition to Scrum org"

Cheers
Pooja
