| Notes: | Well-known local author Bob Trubshaw has spent over twenty years researching the history of the group of eight parishes known as 'The Wolds'. On Tuesday 18th September he will reveal for the first time his new insights in a fully illustrated talk called 'The Wolds: What, When and Where?' at Burton on the Wolds village hall, commencing at 7.45. By looking closely at the available evidence from archaeology, history, place-names and the landscape itself, Bob Trubshaw will answer such questions as: - Why are our parishes are known as 'the Wolds'? - Where was the Iron Age 'Especially Sacred Grove'? - Why did this grove become a Roman town and later an early church? - Where did the 'natives' go when the Anglo-Saxons arrived? - Why does Seagrave have pre-Anglo-Saxon minor place-names? - What do the names of Walton, Prestwold and Burton reveal about Wolds history? - When and why did villages first appear? - What did the Vikings do for and to the Wolds? This talk is the last in a series of events celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Wolds Historical Organisation. After the talk Nick Shaw will present the prizes in the Wolds Historical Organisation's 'The WHO's What, When and Where' competition. 'The Wolds: What, When and Where?'
