Am I too missing something? Why can't you go back to your original 2-diodes solution - whichever has the higher voltage provides the power? But ensure that the

may need a gate resistor circuit looks very good but for Q2 i would use a relay and remove 1 diode,since you will get voltage drop,plus a lot of heat on Q2
