Description:
Working cooperatively with the National Park Service, Lake Mead National
Recreation Area, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting two (2)
Archaeologists to assist with archaeological field work, lab analysis, and
data processing throughout Lake Mead NRA (LAME) and Parashant National
Monument (PARA). The field work will include surveying for cultural
resources, recording and documenting cultural resources, and testing and
excavation of archeological sites. The lab analysis and data processing will
include analysis and cataloging of artifacts, updating of databases, filling
out of site forms, and report preparation. Archaeological surveys require
walking over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions.
Overnight camping in remote areas for several days at a time is required.
LAME and PARA encompass over 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and
northwestern Arizona.
Compensation:
* Annual Living Allowance: $22,800

* $15 Field Per Diem while camping
Timeline:
o Annual position, starting August 2008 (or upon completion of background
check)
o Full time, 40+ hours per week
Location:
* Lake Mead NRA and Parashant National Monument (southeastern Nevada
and northwestern Arizona)
Qualifications:
Required:
* Educational and field experiences related to archeology,
anthropology, or
* indigenous peoples studies;
* Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camp in
the backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather
conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical
condition;
* Meet eligibility requirements to receive an AmeriCorps Education
Scholarship: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, and (2)
eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a
lifetime, regardless of award amount) and
* Posses a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving
record;
Helpful but not required:
* Read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
* Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and
electronic field data collection;
* Experience driving 4WD vehicles in an on- and off-road setting;
* Posses good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
* Experience working in the desert southwest.
