Cultural Surveys Hawai'i, Inc. (CSH) is an island-based company

Position Description: Archaeological Technician
Regarding field work: under the direction of a project director, you
will be expected to perform standard archaeological field
investigations, including 100 percent pedestrian survey,
archaeological feature identification, mapping, and recording, shovel
test excavations, controlled test excavations (test pits), areal
excavation, and backhoe testing programs. With appropriate training,
you will be expected to work independently as an archaeological
monitor on various development projects. As an archaeological
monitor, you will need to be comfortable and safety conscious around
heavy machinery. For all fieldwork, you will be expected to provide
detailed records of your work on the appropriate survey, site
recording, excavation, and monitoring forms. The excavation of human
skeletal remains will likely be part of your duties. Fieldwork can
involve strenuous physical labor, from hiking over rough terrain
and/or through dense vegetation, to vegetation clearance with a
machete, to pick and shovel excavations. Travel to the other islands
may be required for fieldwork. While you are on the outer
islands, CSH pays your travel and room and board, and living
arrangements are typically communal in rented houses or condominiums
with kitchen facilities.
Regarding office work: with appropriate supervision you will be
expected to write up the results of fieldwork. This will include
historic property descriptions, stratigraphic profile descriptions,
and summaries of previous archaeological investigations in the
vicinity. You must be familiar with Microsoft Office software. Office
work will also include various forms of laboratory work. Familiarity
with Microsoft Access, Adobe Illustrator, and/or ESRI's ArGIS software
would be helpful.
Requirements
You must have a degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, or demonstrated
experience working in cultural resource management. You must have a
valid driver's license. You will likely need your own transportation
to get to the different jobs sites. CSH is looking for a full-time
employee, averaging 40 hours per week. Part time employees may be
considered if they have a consistent work schedules. Previous
experience in Hawaiian archaeology is greatly preferred.
Reimbursement
Compensation is commensurate with past experience, skills, education,
and productivity. Generally, starting wages range from $14.00 to
$18.00 per hour, and pay packages include medical and dental
insurance, a 401K program, a paid time off program, and a company
profit sharing program.
