Hello again,

Thank you to everyone who responded to my earlier posting for resumes. There
have been a large number of questions emailed to me about when we will be
contacting people that we are interested in
hiring for the Janesville, Wisconsin excavations.

Unfortunately, the start of the project has been
delayed due to high water levels and subsequent flooding of the sites planned
for excavation. Because of the delay, we will not be contacting
people and hiring etc., until after the week of September 15th.

I also am currently working out of the US and do not have regular access to
email. I will not be able to return emailed messages until after the 13th of
September.

Thanks again,
John Hodgson

James and Dolley Madison's Montpelier

The Montpelier Foundation is seeking applications for four full-time
archaeological technician positions with benefits (health insurance, retirement,
vacation and sick leave). Over the next two years we will be conducting
excavations around the home of James and Dolly Madison, Montpelier. The purpose
of these excavations is to investigate architectural and domestic features
surrounding the Montpelier Mansion. In addition, we will be conducting surveys
of Civil War winter encampments on the property and excavations in areas of the
plantation's 18th century agricultural complex (in particular a late 18th
century quarter for field slaves). For applications, please send a cover
letter detailing your level of archaeological experience as it applies to 18th
and 19th century archaeological sites and the identification of 18th and
19th-century material culture, a resume, and a list of references. Applications
need to be received by Sept 15, 2004 (via mail, e-mail, or fax). Free housing
is available at Montpelier; salary is $11.00 per hour ($9.00 per hour with
housing) with a $1.00 per hour raise after 6-month review. While this
announcement does have a deadline, positions will be filled as suitable
applicants are found. Send application materials to Dr. Matthew Reeves,

With Ohio still working so hard to pass creationism over science in the

Folks,

Mark, who I finally had a chance to meet this spring at the SAA's in Montreal,
makes a good point here. I want to encourage you all to respect the fact that
Mark, as well as anyone else who is forwarding relevant job postings to this
list, are making the time to send these on as a courtesy to all of us.
Unfortunately there is a small incidence of people who reply to these messages
without looking at the sender and end up sending Mark, or some other unintended
party, their resumes, letters inquiry, etc... Like many of you Mark is often on
the road or overseas and uses limited space web mail servers which can easily be
pushed to their carrying capacity by a resume with a gee-whiz logo in the
corner. More importantly when you think about it, would you want to hire
someone who mails a resume to the wrong place? ;-)

And now with that little issue being addresses, I wanted to remind people that
if you are on a niche mailing list or a department faculty member and a job
announcement goes out that you believe might be suitable for the Shovel Bums
audience please forward it on. It helps out everyone, and I am sure in the
reverse situation you would have loved to have had the opportunity to have heard
about that position. I try to intercept these forwards when possible to fix the
"reply to" address so that you will not inadvertantly get a few resumes back as
mentioned above. And hopefully with these occasional reminders that situation
will become almost non-existent.

Thanks for your support.

Onto the original posting.

Best,

R. Joe

[Note, I know nothing about the details of this position. Don't send
me your queries, job application, etc.

A lot of folks out there really need to learn how to read ads on who
you should reply to. Best, Mark Hall ]
