Folks,

Just a random note here from R. Joe as we are moving into the busy season.

For employees please remember that when you are applying for jobs to be
professional, i.e. that means a cover letter (or cover e-mail) and a clear and
concise version of your vita. Don't just send in an e-mail "Me dig good. Me
want work." :-) On the flip side, employers please try to include wages when
possible, how per diem is alloted, if housing is provided and if employees have
individual rooms, where the project is located, expertise required, etc... This
is a science, and this is a business, both of which require professionalism and
clear communication on all levels. It is up to you to ensure this is what is
happening. Make it so.

And of course - you need to look good for the field so pick up your gear at
http://www.shovelbums.org ;-)

Onto the posting.

Best,

R. Joe

Archaeologist and Lead Instructor

Summer High School Field Program in New Mexico

OUR MISSION & PROGRAM

The Trek Institute in Archaeology is a 2-week field school course for high
school students. The Cottonwood Gulch Foundation sponsors educational wilderness
expeditions and outdoor programs in the American Southwest that promote personal
growth, scientific, historic, and cultural discovery as well as a knowledgeable
environmental ethic among all those who participate. The Cottonwood Gulch
Foundation is an educational non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in the state of
New Mexico. Unique program centers on personal growth and hands-on learning in
disciplines such as wildlife biology, archaeology, Native American art and art
history, environmental ethics, and landscape studies.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Archaeologist, a lead instructor, directly runs this innovative field school
program at the base camp of Cottonwood Gulch. Archaeologist will design and lead
summer-long, hands-on projects to teach members of the Trek Institute, as well
as members of the other Gulch expeditions, the principles of Southwestern
archaeology. Activities and projects should lead students to understand surface
archaeology, artifact analysis and curation, experimental techniques, and small
site excavation at our base camp. Resources include: 540-acre land preserve at
Cottonwood Gulch, in Zuni Mountains of New Mexico 60 miles south of Chaco
Canyon; the Gulch museum and collection of ancestral Puebloan artifacts; and
custom learning lab areas for ceramics, cooking, and agriculture. Archaeologist
also leads interpretive trips to Chaco Canyon and other area sites.
Archaeologist lives at the residential base camp on the preserve and will be a
senior leader in this closely knit community. Dates are June 17 - August 18,
with a possibility of advance work as well. An exciting opportunity to shape
this relatively new program for the Foundation, which has been exposing students
to archaeology since 1926.

QUALIFICATIONS

Successful applicants will show solid experience teaching and mentoring students
in the field and will exhibit significant passion for Southwestern archaeology.
Priority will be given to all those with classroom experience and those with
advanced degrees.

BENEFITS

Salary dependent on experience ($2,000-4,000). Full room and board, laundry
facilities, health care coverage, transportation to and from New Mexico, a
regular rotation of time off, an exceptionally fun working environment, and
stars to sleep under every night.
