Please take the time to browse this list and forward it on to any students you know who might be interested.  In addition please print it for posting in your department office/library and be sure to hand it out/e-mail to your archaeology classes.  If you are a student in a class and your professor does not mention this list do your classmates do them a favor and bring it to your professors attention. And don't assume the kid who sits in the front row and always hangs around after class is going to do it.

So R. Joe why should I do a field school anyway?

For those of you who are debating about doing a field school I just want to share this bit of wisdom with you that I share every year.  Well maybe it is not exactly wisdom, maybe it is a trademark of a large shoe manufacturer, but in this context, it gets the point across:

JUST DO IT!

You see, regardless of your age (with the exception of Jainists ) you are never, ever, going to be as young as you are right now again.

Once you leave the hallowed halls of higher learning you will not ever, be able to "drop off the radar" of the real world for six to eight weeks and just go somewhere to experience life to its fullest.  You will not ever have so little to loose again by not working for several months in a row. You will not ever, with the exception of grad school, be poor enough again to be able to afford so much time off, i.e. having few enough pressing responsibilities that you can go off for months on end.

Yes I know money is tight for most of us and maybe there is no conceivable way a $7k field school will ever be on your horizon - that does not matter.   There are many, and I mean MANY field schools in this directory that are financially attainable (some even take volunteers) for nearly everyone.

To put the cost in perspective you cannot loose site (pun intended) that no matter what a field school costs, you will NEVER be able to afford again is time itself.  For it is the commodity of time my friends whose value increases exponentially every moment you are alive.  You cannot bank time, you cannot save time, you can only use time, and for you - time it is a finite commodity.

Use your time wisely.

All right, I made my point that NOW is the time for you to go to field school, but you are still wondering WHY is it worth it to go?  The answer is simple.

Because your life will change irrevocably forever.

Pretty deep, eh?   Maybe, maybe not, but it is simply the truth.  While it is also true you change your life with every turn you take on the highway, this is a bit different.  Two profound things will happen to you by going to field school:

1 - If you choose to become a professional archaeologist some of the friends you make during this time in field school will be your colleagues for life.  Together you will always have that common shared bond of your adventures, good and bad, in field school. The old phrase "It's not what you know it's who you know that matters" rings true from this.  Because as your career grows, so will your peers careers.  And one day one of your old field school pals will be in a position where simply the fact that they know you from you shared field school experience will be enough to tip the balance in your favor when all else is equal.

Example:  Years ago I had finished one contract and had some time to kill before the next one started.  I heard from a friend that Jill Yakubik's EarthSearch was looking for some temporary crew chiefs at Ft. Polk.  So I pulled out my copy of Anton Hoffman's "The List" (A precursor to ShovelBums) and called the EarthSearch office to check.  A woman answers the phone in a heavy southern accent and I introduce myself and inform her why I am calling.  The soft southern voice rolls off a "Rrrrrjoe don't you know who this is?".  Well that type of response in a southern drawl is enough to send up a bunch of red flags for me as there is an even split between the number of anonymous southern accents I want to hear asking that, and those I don't.  And I was already a bit gun shy on the situation as this was now second time this week it had happened so I could only answer honestly and say "Sorry but no".  To which the voice rolled on "RrrrJoe this is Donna...you can start on August 1st".

You see, Donna Stone and I had been in field school together in Copan “back in the day” and  I did not realize she had ended up at EarthSearch. Simply because she knew who I was she hired me on the spot.

NOTE: The same goes true for enemies in field schools. Use field school as an opportunity to learn the meaning of “turn the other cheek”.  If you piss of the bloke in the next tent over, make it a point to come to an understanding.  Your core training is as an anthropologist; use those skills to be a better professional.

2 -  Regardless of whether you decide to make archaeology your life what you take away from field school changes you.  You will have experiences that you will never ever have the opportunity to know otherwise.  These experiences are not limited to just field work.  All field schools are ethnographic by nature and wherever you are you will be completely immersed in a culture foreign to any you likely know.

I tell you what, ask your archaeology professor in class today "What experiences did you have in field school that you would not have had otherwise"? I guarantee you will be in for a treat - especially when they get that vacant look on their face and they realize they are gone a touch to far down memory lane and have to back peddle before they tell you a story that they don’t want you to know…

But trust me,  you want to experience it yourself.  Moreover, in the end you will understand why archaeologists are called "The Cowboys of Science".

Oh - do me a favor this year also.  If you find a field school through ShovelBums send me a post card from field school :-)

Hi everyone,

For your convenience I have put together a printed version of the 2007
Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory. I thought that it
might be handy for departments to have a printed copy to put in the
office or reading room for students to browse through. It might also be
a nice thing to order and send to your parents to help bolster your case
for wanting to go to an archaeology field school :-)

The first edition is available at the link below. I am initially
selling it for $19.94 which is only a $5 profit for my efforts in
pulling this together, so that seems pretty fair. I would encourage you
to forward this link to the person responsible for making purchases for
your department.

http://www.cafepress.com/shovelbums.106467913

Like many things in an archaeologists dig kit, this book is not
particularly pretty. But it is practical, and it gets the job done the
right way. I sincerely hope you are able to find an Archaeology Field
School using the ShovelBums service. If you find it the book useful I
would like to ask that you help to spread the word about it. ShovelBums
is paid for completely out of pocket by myself and advertising is only
done by word of mouth among professionals.

And of course - all of the field schools are viewable online for free at
http://www.shovelbums.org

There is also time to still be included in the directory. There will be
an updated version of the e-mail directory going out in a few weeks to
cover new additions to the directory.

Best,

R. Joe

The last job was approved while I was making a comment (below) on it.  This is an excellent example of why your moderators (this time it was Jim Colburn) are so great to have - they make sure messages make it out quickly!  Because of the nature of job announcements and my schedule it is with the help of Jim that messages are sent out in such a timely manner.

Second comment (this is the one I was originally adding to the post):    Every once in awhile you will see a name that just makes a big smile come across your face.  And Elia Perez (the original sender of this TRC position)  is one of those.  I used to throw these massive parties at my old house on Altura in El Paso.  and it never failed that about 10 or 11 Elia  would come rolling up one one big, black, bad a** 1200 cc Harley (which if I recall had a flaming skull painted on the tank?) with a case of beer bungee corded to the back.  She would hop off her hog and in the sweetest voice in the world yell "hola vato!".  She would just light up the whole party (and being an exceptional professional she never was buzzed when it came time to hop back on her big bike).  Elia and I were both directing crews at the time and I loved it when our crews got to work together, because she was as great in the field as she was out.  And if you ever have a chance to hear Elia play the drums - make the time for it!

Onto the posting.

Best,

R. Joe
