Preservation Program Coordinator/ARCHAEOLOGIST/ Fredericksburg District of
the Virginia Department of Transportation, position - #20560, Hiring range:
$34,910 - $59.953; salary negotiable, based on training and experience.
Fredericksburg is located about one hour south of Washington, D.C. and one
hour north of Richmond, Virginia.  The position will plan and coordinate a
regional cultural resource program involving archaeology within a
transportation setting.  Applies cultural resource management principles and
techniques in coordination of transportation projects involving complex
archaeological issues with Federal and State environmental laws,
regulations, policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated ability to apply technical principles and
practices to cultural resources within a legally mandated framework as
applied to transportation project development; to design, conduct, and
oversee cultural resource studies; demonstrated ability to integrate
cultural resource requirements into overall environmental commitments of
projects.  Knowledge of current archaeological method and theory.
Proficient knowledge of environmental laws, regulations, policies and
procedures affecting VDOT and the development of transportation projects.  A
demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
College degree in Anthropology, Historic Preservation, or related field
and/or experience and training that demonstrates ability to perform the job
duties.

We are seeking a North American archaeologist, and preference will be given
to someone with a specialty in Midwest/Upper Great Lakes. The successful
candidate must also be capable of teaching introductory courses in
biological anthropology.
Beloit College is a small liberal arts college with a focus on teaching and
involving students in faculty research. It has a long commitment to a
four-field anthropology and is the site of the Logan Museum of
Anthropology. The successful candidate will work closely with the Museum,
its personnel and collections and will also be expected to contribute to
all-College programs.

STAFF ARCHAEOLOGIST

The Position: Under general supervision, the Staff Archaeologist I will compile and interpret archaeological data in relation to standardized procedures for the identification and evaluation of cultural resources and in relatively simple data recovery excavations. The Archaeologist I is a professional level staff member, who acts as a senior team leader in the preparation of technical reports on these investigations; authorizes expenditures of funds to achieve project goals; coordinates with clients; and monitors both time and budget of their team to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget. The incumbent will also provide lead work to staff in archaeological and archival research, both in the field and at the Anthropological Studies Center; prepare cost and technical proposals; research designs and treatment plans; report on investigations; initiate and carry on contacts with other state agencies, public jurisdictions, private companies, and academic institutions to gather information for exchange of ideas or coordination of findings and recommendations; and prepare draft reports or manuals of instructions or procedures.

This is a temporary position. Depending on department needs, the position may be extended. Benefits include extensive health, dental, vision care, and retirement system membership.

Qualifications: The minimum of qualifications are a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field plus: (1) at least two years of full-time professional experience and (2) demonstrated ability to carry research to completion. In addition to these minimum qualifications, a professional in prehistoric archaeology must have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric period. A professional in historical archaeology must have at least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of the archaeological resources of the historic period. The successful candidate must also be able to handle stress levels of the job, while maintaining a professional demeanor; work independently and exercise good judgment; multi-task; and speak and write effectively. Expertise with directing heavy equipment (backhoes and excavators) and completion of standard Section 106 documents preferred. Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies may be required. The candidate must successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination.

The Archeologist I position for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is a
regular, full-time position in Austin, Texas, with an initial 6-month
probationary period; full benefits are provided.

POSITION TITLE:  Staff Archaeologist
CLOSING DATE: 12 March 2001.
LENGTH OF APPOINTMENT: Two years, renewable upon completion.
SALARY RANGE: $30,000 to $36,000 (US) per annum on the basis of knowledge, skills, and experience.
HOUSING ALLOWANCE:  Fully furnished, modern housing provided in addition to salary.
TRAVEL EXPENSES:  Employee and dependents travel to (and from) the Marshall Islands provided.  Household moving costs also provided.
 
DUTIES:
The Staff Archaeologist will serve as the republic’s technical expert on archaeology and historic preservation. The Archaeologist will guide or assist the Historic Preservation Offices in the following activities:
1) Head the archaeological compliance program of the Historic Preservation Office in enforcing the Republic of the Marshall Islands Historic Preservation Act 1991; 2) training Historic Preservation Office staff in archaeology and cultural resource management to enable them to be as knowledgeable, self-sufficient and self- directed as possible in carrying out their mission; 3) developing, coordinating and carrying out plans for archaeological surveys and test excavations including the preparation and delivery of final reports; 4) establishing and maintaining standardized cultural resource inventories and registration systems; 5) monitoring ground disturbing projects; 6) assessing the condition and evaluating the significance of a variety of cultural resources; 7) cultural resource management planning; 8) designing and managing cultural resource databases; 9) ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the U.S. National Historic Preservation Act with regard to U.S. federal undertakings in the FSM; 10) other related duties as assigned by the HPO or the Deputy HPO.
 
All work conducted or supervised by the Archaeologist shall meet the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation.  All reports, publications, audiovisual materials, and training and public information materials produced by the Archaeologist in the course of her or his duty shall include the required acknowledgment of NPS financial support, the required NPS/Interior disclaimer statement, and the required U.S. Government nondiscrimination statement.  Personal publications by the Archaeologist of a research or technical nature that have been derived from work conducted in the course of her or his duty as the Archaeologist must acknowledge RMI HPO and NPS financial support. One copy of any such publication must be provided to the RMI HPO and the National Park Service. The National Park Service and the Department of the Interior shall have a royalty free right to republish any such material.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
The applicant must currently have a graduate degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field with a specialization in archaeology.  In addition, the applicant must have a minimum of three years of full-time professional experience in applying theories, methods, and practices of archaeology that enable sound professional judgments to be made about the identification, evaluation, documentation, registration and treatment of cultural properties. The applicant must demonstrate the successful application of acquired proficiencies in archaeology to the practice of historic preservation, and the ability to carry research to completion.
 
Preference will be given to applicants with a specialization and field experience in Pacific Prehistory.  Preferred applicants will have previous experience in or working with a Historic Preservation Office and will have worked with National Register evaluation and State level review boards.  GIS experience preferred.  Experience in underwater archaeology a plus.  The applicant must be fluent in English and be able to communicate at a professional level in English both orally and in writing.  The applicant must also be in good health and be fully capable of undertaking extended archaeological fieldwork in rugged terrain, under adverse conditions including high heat and humidity.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is hiring an
archaeologist to complete a cultural resource team for the Southeast
Service Region, to be based in District 5-0 offices in Allentown.
Individuals in a regional position will have unparalleled opportunities and
responsibilities to shape the direction and performance of cultural
resource investigations conducted on the Department's $1.5 billion annual
design and construction program.

The eleven PennDOT Engineering Districts have been grouped into five
service regions.  Each region will have a team comprised of an
archaeologist and an architectural historian.  The team will guide the
Section 106 process starting early in project design, working holistically
on all cultural resource issues related to a project, and participate
interactively with a design team of project engineers, designers, and
environmental specialists.  Southeast Region consists of Districts 5-0
(Allentown) and 8-0 (Harrisburg).  Greater Pittsburgh Region consists of
Districts 1-0 (Oil City) and 11-0 (Pittsburgh).  Southwest Region consists
of Districts 9-0 (Hollidaysburg), 10-0 (Indiana), and 12-0 (Uniontown).
Northcentral Region consists of Districts 2-0 (Clearfield), 3-0
(Montoursville), and 4-0 (Dunmore).  Greater Philadelphia Region consists

Major Duties of the Position:

Provides technical support in inventory and management of cultural resources under jurisdiction of the Forest Service.  Conducts inventories of Forest cultural resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects.  Researches reference materials such as State and National register files, historic documents, archeological reports, maps and aerial photos, and interviews source individuals concerning project areas.  Performs on-the-ground area searches for surface and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archeological remains.  Prepares Archeological Reconnaissance Reports and maps.  Insures that archeology work assignments are carried out in a safe, timely manner according to established standards and procedures.  Maintains the archeological Reconnaissance schedule by estimating and reporting on site recording.

 

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet qualification requirements specified in the Office of Personnel Management's Qualification Standards Operating Manual for the 0102 series as follows:

Experience:  One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled;

OR,

Education:  Successfully completed 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree.   This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

Appointment Information:

Term appointments are nonstatus, nonpermanent appointments; do not confer competitive status; are not of a continuing nature; and will terminate upon completion of work.  Probable duration of these  appointments is two years but could extend an additional two years depending on workload.  Selected applicants will serve a one-year trial period and be eligible for coverage under the Federal Employee Retirement System, the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program, and the Federal Employee Government Life Insurance Program.

 

The Mark Twain National Forest is located in 29 counties in southern Missouri; therefore, overnight travel may be necessary in order to accomplish field survey work.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Who Can Apply:

Applications will be accepted from any U. S. citizen 18 years or older.  All male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must have registered for the Selective Service.  Applicants filing under this announcement will be considered for these specific vacancies at these duty locations only.

 

Current or former Federal employees certified as surplus or displaced in the commuting area of the vacancy and covered under the Forest Service's Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) may be entitled to receive special priority selection.

 

District of Columbia (DC) Department of Corrections (DOC) employees displaced by the closing of the Lorton Correctional Complex will receive priority consideration for competitive service positions if they meet the minimum qualification standards for the position.  If both a DC DOC priority candidate and an ICTAP candidate apply, either may be selected.

 

Major Duties of the Position:

Assists in development of unit’s Program of Work for heritage resources by gathering information on resource needs from district personnel.  Independently conducts heritage resource surveys and inventories in areas of proposed Forest Service projects gathering information for input into environmental analysis and project planning processes.  Manages and maintains secured Heritage Resource files and Site Atlas to ensure that information is disseminated to appropriate individuals on a need-to-know basis only.  Independently supervises small crew conducting archeological reconnaissance, field and site surveys.  Takes initial corrective action for heritage resource violations by notifying appropriate personnel.

 

Qualifications:

Candidates must meet qualification requirements specified in the Office of Personnel Management's Qualification Standards Operating Manual for the 0102 series as follows:

Experience:  One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled;

OR,

Education:  One full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position .

Method of Evaluation:

Competitors will be evaluated on their extent and quality of experience, education, and training relevant to the duties of the position based on the information contained in their application.

Under CTAP/ICTAP, a well-qualified applicant is one who is rated to be above the minimally qualified candidates under the agency's selection process.  Well-qualified is defined as (1) meeting the qualification standards, selective factors, quality ranking factors, and physical qualifications or (2) is rated by the Agency to be above minimally qualified under the Agency's specific selection process.  See below for application process.

· These positions are not included in a bargaining unit.

· Forest Service affiliated day care facilities are not available.

· Government housing is not available.

· These are non-exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

 

Veterans Preference:
