For US ShovelBums

STOP!  If you are looking for a job and are going to get cranky because this is not one excavate no further, you are into sterile soil here. However; if you curious and wonder if there might be some inclusions if you dig just a smidge more then read on for a bit of useful stuff.

All I want to say is please, please, please get out and vote tomorrow.   And of equal importance PLEASE motivate a friend/family member/anyone to go vote who might not otherwise.  While it might sound corny, it is true: lots and lots and lots of people have died through the centuries just so you can have this opportunity to vote.  So as we stand on the shoulders of giants to see our future, don't be smug and insult your heritage by pissing on their heads.  And it was only 88 years ago that the 19th amendment was passed granting women's suffrage.....how many of you are closing in on 1/3 to 1/2 of 88 years?  More than most, we as a profession should know our past is a lot closer than we often think.

If you won't vote because you know your friends/family members vote is going to cancel it out.  You miss the point.

And if you are not voting because you are pissed at the way things are and where they are going, get over your pathetic apathy and vote, there has to be someone out there with your views.  And if you don't vote will you please finally shut up and quit complaining so much?....I thought so, so since you won't shut up, vote, so at least have a leg to stand on.  Heck I even have something to gripe about as my family has even lost things directly to (future) govt. officials  - my grandfather and Ronald Reagan were grade school classmates together and Ronnie once stole a load of my grandpa's tin in the junkyard in Tampico, now if that doesn't cause an individual loose faith in the system I don't know what will ;-)  Ok maybe it really does not cause one to loose the faith, but it is a fun small world story...now there is that connection I have with Ross Perot, but that will be for another year.

As for me I am still voting for the candidate that I want to, even after a close call with secret service at a their rally recently, where I wasn't being that bad but all of a sudden my wife heard the cops radio behind her saying "no no, the guy in the black leather jacket" as the secret service guy  in plain clothes changes tangents and sidled up next to me and the three security guys on the capital building all trained there their binoculars on me while flipping referencing their ID booklets, fortunately for me I had a 1.4x extender on my 200mm lens and so I knew I could not take a hip shot photo of him.... which I am sure would have gotten him cranky...).

Enough of my diatribe onto the fun part.

In honor of the two major candidates I have come up with a drink for you to celebrate the outcome tomorrow, regardless of how it goes.  And as always. Don't be stupid and drive if you have these drinks - and if your friends are in AA, be sure to have their favorite non-alcoholic beverage handy:

A "John McCain"(tm as drink :-) - Simple and strong.

2 oz of single malt scotch
1 oz of vanilla vodka (a nod to Obama because he is now a part of John now)
1 ice cube (a nod to Sarah)

A "Barack on the Rocks"(tm) - smooth and cultured but it reminds you of youth

1 oz Dark Crème de Cacao
1 finger of  Kahlua (a nod to John as Arizona is always a gateway to cheap Kahlua and he is a part of Obama now)
1 oz Vanilla Vodka, (a nod to some of his south Chicago constituents)
Half and half to taste (try 2 oz)
Ice as preferred.

Layer ice in glass.  Pour in Dark Crème de Cacao, Kahlua and Vanilla Vodka.  If no spoon, pour half and half in slowly so it hits an ice cube to separate it out.

Oh heck - I will throw one in for Ralph Nader too:

A Ralph Nader

Green tea with sugar (no Splenda here!)
Spot of gin.

Hi folks,

My apologies if you have received this as a duplicate.  If you know someone who needs to advertise their field school please pass this on or post in your department:

I am R. Joe Brandon, the founder of www.ShovelBums.org, which has over 12,000+ archaeology members.

I wanted to let you know that the
2009
Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory is being sent out by e-mail to the 12,000+ international archaeology members of ShovelBums.org. The first edition of the 2009 directory will be going out in November 2008.

There is no greater way to announce your archaeology field school to the the worlds largest community of archaeology students and archaeology practitioners.

If you are running an archaeology or CRM field school this year visit
http://www.shovelbums.org to submit your field school information.  If you have a peer who is running a field school, please forward this message to them.
Ethnography/Cultural Anthropology/Primate studies and related crossover research interest field schools are also welcome because of the diversity of students' research interests.

Previous years listings included
such locations as China, Colorado & Cyprus and ranged from the Neolithic in the Ukraine to 19th century in New York and more.

Why Use ShovelBums?

So why should you use ShovelBums.org to announce your field school?
Because field schools in this directory will be sent by e-mail* to all 12,000+ members of Shovel Bums LLC as well as being posted on www.ShovelBums.org, one of the most heavily trafficked sites by archaeology students from around the world. Instead of students having to find your announcement somewhere on the web, flooding e-mail lists with multiple announcements for your school, or trying to find it in print, your field school is sent directly to your target audience in an easy to share e-mail.  And you can be sure that if one of the12,000 members is not the right one for your field school, they likely have a friend who is!  And since the 2008 Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory is sent as an e-mail, it is easy for a recipient to forward your announcement on to the interested party.

So who are these "Shovel Bums" and why is it good to reach them?

Shovel bums LLC was founded in 1999 by R. Joe Brandon as a niche resource for the  archaeology and CRM community focusing exclusively on professional  job advertisements, and now features the annual Archaeology Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory.  Because of the narrow focus Shovel Bums has become the worlds largest professional membership of archaeologists & CRMers.  Among these members are the
thousands of students you want to reach.  These are the students who read their e-mail everyday while preparing themselves for a future in archaeology or CRM and who recognize a field school is critical to their success in this career.  The great thing about ShovelBums having 12,000 members is that even if the student or professor who reads your advertisement is not your target they likely know a friend or student who is.  And it is worth repeating: because the
2008 Comprehensive Archaeology Field School Directory is initially sent out as an e-mail it is easy for them to forward the announcement on to the person they know who will be perfect!

Fee (Is your project broke?  No worries, read on)

There is a
$25 fee* for being included in the ShovelBums.org directory.   HOWEVER if you are from an institution that can not afford the fee, do not hesitate to submit your field school anyway - IT WILL STILL BE INCLUDED.  Just drop me a note so I know.
My philosophy is it is more important for the students to have access to knowing where the field schools are then to prevent any institution from using the ShovelBums field school directory service.  And if your institutions can pay this fee, that is great, it helps to support the ShovelBums service that your students rely on.

Shovel Bums LLC is run independently without the support of any institution.  All expenses are covered out of pocket by R. Joe with the proceeds from this directory helping  to keep Shovel Bums a viable tool for your students as they pursue a career in archaeology or CRM.

Additional information:

*E-Mail to 12,000+ prospective students

The e-mail with a description of all field schools will be sent as text and will not include graphics. Graphics are not included to prevent over filling students e-mail accounts. A link to the ShovelBums hosted field school web pages with up to six color photographs, maps, etc... and will be linked to in the message.  A link to your field school will also be accessible from the home page of ShovelBums.org.  You can see an example of the 2007 and 2008 listings by clicking here.

Photos

- Up to six photos may be submitted to
2009fieldschoolphotos@shovelbums.org with the subject of "Field school Photos:Field school/Institution name".  Photos must be submitted only in digital format and be no larger than 640x480 pixels.

Fee

- $25 - UNLESS:
Volunteer projects which provide travel and room & board are exempt of this fee.
- Discounts are provided for institutions listing more than one field school.
- If you are from a cash strapped project and this payment is not an option I am willing to work with you - I feel it is important to get the word out about field schools and financial limitations should not preclude your inclusion.  This might be bad for business, but it is good for the students.  And the students are what it is all about.
- If you pay online  these currencies are accepted:  U.S. Dollars, Canadian Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, Yen, Australian Dollar, New Zealand Dollar, Swiss Franc, Hong Kong Dollar, Singapore Dollar, Swedish Krona, Danish Krone, Polish Zloty, Norwegian Krone, Hungarian Forint, Czech Koruna. You may also pay by check.

You may submit your listing at:

If you have any problems or questions feel free to contact me with any questions atrjoe@shovelbums.org
