NATURE OF WORK

  

This is specialized work in the development of the historic preservation program for the STOF Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum.

 

Responsibilities consist of archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, field data collection and data recording.  Some laboratory work involving artifact processing may also be required.  This position reports to the Tribal Archaeologist and is a non-exempt position.  This position oversees six field technicians.

 

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

The listed duties are only illustrative and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed by this position. The omission of specific statements does not preclude management from assigning specific duties not listed, if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.

 

Performs systematic investigation of possible archeological sites using accurate mapping techniques and established field recording methods. Interprets data using topographic maps and aerial photographs. Establishes site boundaries by accepted archaeological methodology and includes shovel testing at prescribed intervals, generally to a depth of a meter and passing the excavated soil through hardware cloth screens made for the purpose.

Oversees all field staff in their duties while also assisting in the relevant field work.  This position is responsible for all performance reviews of the field staff as well as any disciplinary actions that may occur.  May supervise up to six other individuals at once.

Will assist in the location and excavation of cultural resources located on the reservations and lands of the STOF.  This will be done in a manner that will meet or exceed professional standards and guidelines.

Will assist in the identification, recording and mapping of archaeological sites.  Will participate in field analysis of cultural and historical fact- finding projects.  

May participate in archeological laboratory activities such as record-keeping and processing of field specimens including; cleaning, counting and cataloging of artifacts and ecofacts.

May participate in activities to reconstruct and preserve artifacts such as ceramic pottery shards.

Assists crew members at the site in a range of routine archeological and associated tasks.

 

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

  • Basic knowledge of Seminole culture and history.
  • Ability to collect field data and accurately record findings.
  • Knowledge of mapping principles and techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs.
  • Ability to collect field data and accurately record findings. Knowledge of general excavation techniques, tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of archeological field and/or laboratory procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to serve the Tribal community, the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the STOF tribal community, general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Position requires: a) Excavating and collecting field data and assisting in the recording of findings; b) packing and transporting artifacts and samples; and c) cleaning, sorting and cataloging artifacts and samples in the laboratory.  Requires supervisory experience.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Masters Degree in Anthropology/History or related field.  Previous related work experience also required.  2+ years of supervisory experience also required.  Excellent English oral and written communication skills. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.   The ability to do presentations to the public as well as within the Seminole Tribe.

 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

 

Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part of the job (more than 70%).  

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Archaeological fieldwork will generally consist of heavy physical labor outside under typical southern Florida conditions including extreme heat, rain, humidity, and other conditions prevalent in the swampy lands of the region.  Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

Principal Investigator (Archaeologist) with extensive research and
writing experience needed in El Paso office to direct compliance
projects for both federal and commercial clients. Successful
candidate will conduct work in southeastern New Mexico and west
Texas. Prior archaeological experience in the Southwest and a
research interest in the dynamics of hunter/gatherer subsistence are
preferred.

Requirements
Responsibilities will include the direction of archaeological
projects being conducted by the El Paso office. Linear right-of-way
experience and prior experience with NEPA documentation is a plus.
Demonstrated experience in directing the production of quality
reports, managing multiple projects, and budgeting is essential.
Individual must meet permitting requirements for work in multiple BLM
districts. Previous experience with working with SHPOs of Texas, New
Mexico, and Arizona is desired. Candidates must have an M.A. degree
in Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field, and at least five (5)
years of supervisory experience with two years minimum must have been
in the southwest (as noted above). The potential candidate will be
able to document the successful completion of at least two research
projects and at least one (1) regional or national level publication
on cultural resources.  Compensation package will be commensurate
with experience.

The position is based in Plano, TX and prior archaeological
experience in Texas and surrounding states is necessary.  Lithic
analytical experience and right-of-way experience and prior

demonstrated proficiency with GIS software and GPS technology and

POSITION: Seasonal Archaeologists for Summer 2009 field season in support of the
U.S. Army Alaska Cultural Resources Program to be assigned at one of two

DURATION: Approximately 3-6 months, starting late May/ early June 2009. Crews
typically work four 10-hour days each week. If necessary, time after August may

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of Installation Archaeologists, conduct

may include the evaluation of sites for NRHP eligibility. Crews based out of
Fairbanks may also be completing survey projects at Fort Richardson, Anchorage,

QUALIFICATIONS

including completion of archaeological field school. Graduate work in
Archaeology preferred.

Crew Member Minimum Requirements: Completion of junior year in an Anthropology
degree program with emphasis in archaeology or completion of archaeological

Preferred applicants will have knowledge of North American, Arctic or Sub-Arctic
archaeology; previous Alaskan experience; and/or previous archaeological field
experience.

Applicants must be in very good physical condition; be able to walk long
distances in adverse terrain and weather conditions, carrying all necessary
supplies and equipment; and be able to camp in remote areas if needed.

posses a positive attitude.

SWCA is actively seeking to fill one or more Cultural Resources
Technician positions within our Cultural Resources Program for our
Denver and Sheridan offices. These positions will include travel and
support for our Billings, Montana, Fort Collins and Durango, Colorado,
and Bismarck, North Dakota locations. These are seasonal hourly
positions and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week
depending on workload. Overtime may be possible. Pay rate will be
based on individual qualifications and experience. Applicants should
have a minimum of six months experience working as a field
archeologist. Some exceptions may be made for applicants that can
demonstrate experience comparable with the level of work required. The
potential for transfer to other office locations may be possible if
the successful candidate is interested.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities of a Field Technician include:
•  Working in the field under the supervision of Crew Chiefs in the
performance of archaeological fieldwork;
•  Conducting archaeological monitoring, survey, testing and data
recovery;
•  Contribution to team efforts during cultural resources field and
lab work;
•  Taking initiative, resolving problems, and creating improved
procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner;
•  Assisting with mapping responsibilities in the field, including
collection of GPS data using Trimble units (knowledge of ArcPad is a
plus)

Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience with archaeological survey, excavation
techniques, and methodology is required; site testing and monitoring
experience is ideal. A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology,
or a closely related field is required. Knowledge of historic cultural
resources is preferred. Only applicants with an accredited Field
School Certification or equivalent experience will be considered.
Candidates must be able to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for
long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged
terrain and sometimes at high altitudes, and be able to carry
equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. When project travel
is required, per diem is $39/day (subject to change), hotel room
accommodations and field vehicles are provided, and project travel
time is paid.

The position is full time (40 hours a week), with full benefits (sick leave, vacation leave, holiday pay) and based in San Antonio, Texas.  The wage range is from $43,680 to $52,000 a year, and is commensurate with experience.  Individuals interested in applying should have an advanced degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field (MA/ MS preferred).  They should have served as the project archaeologist (directing excavation, analysis, and write-up) and/or the principal investigator on a minimum of two testing or data recovery excavations involving primarily prehistoric material. Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc. has immediate openings for
field supervisor and archaeological technician positions for
recurring projects at Department of Defense installations in southern
Arizona.  Most initial work will be in Arizona, but (as needed)
candidates must be willing to travel throughout the western region.
Additional work opportunities may also be available across the United
States.  All positions are hourly/temporary, but long-term employment
may be possible. As workloads increase permanent salaried positions
will also be available.

Qualifications:

Field Supervisor:  Preferred qualifications include an advanced
degree in anthropology or archaeology and three years field/write-up
experience in the southwest region. The ability to be permitted in
Arizona and/or New Mexico is also highly desirable. Preference will
be given to individuals who have excellent field, writing, computer,
and GPS/total station skills.

Archaeological Technician: Preferred qualifications include a
Bachelor's degree in anthropology or archaeology and one year of
field experience in the southwest region.  Since survey and
excavation methods utilize GPS units and total stations for field
recording, applicants should be comfortable with the use of such
equipment and/or be willing to learn.
