Please share with your colleagues/students/friends/acquaintances:

Looking to strengthen your resume? Do you want to interact with Indians
concerned about how their past is handled? Are you trying to learn more
about CRM archaeology? Consider...

During Summer 2001 the University of Iowa American Indian and Native
Studies Program in cooperation with the Department of Anthropology and
Office of the State Archaeologist will again offer a field school focusing
on the archaeology of the Fort Atkinson, Iowa area. The emphasis will be on
excavation of portions of two 1840s Winnebago Indian village sites. The
course, entitled "Archaeological Field Methods and Native American
Concerns," runs for six-weeks (6 semester hour) June 18 - July 27. Note:
all participating students pay Iowa in-state tuition rates for these
credits--so an excellent value!

As with our highly successful 1999 and 2000 field schools, the goal of the
Summer 2001 session is to train participants to conduct high-quality field
archaeology that specifically exposes students to CRM archaeology concepts
(field and legislation) and integrates issues of concern for local and
regional native peoples, descendant populations, and living communities. In
addition to training in field archaeology methods, participants will
directly interact with Indians (including Ho-Chunk, Winnebago, Meskwaki,
Sioux, and possibly Ioway and Omaha) as well as professional archaeologists
and local residents interested in the past.

Four Appointments in Classics & Ancient History

As part of an initiative to support Classics and Ancient
History in the UK, the Leverhulme Trust is funding two new
permanent posts (one at professorial level) which will
establish the University of Exeter as a leading centre for
teaching and research in Hellenistic Culture. Hellenistic
Culture is understood in a broad sense, as including the
Greek-speaking culture of the Eastern Mediterranean and the
Near East from the death of Alexander until about AD 200.
The University also intends to make two additional
appointments in other areas of Classics and Ancient
History. The Department currently has 10 full-time staff
(due to rise to 13), including 4 Professors; it achieved 5A
in the 1996 Research Assessment Exercise, and an
'excellent' (22/24) rating in the QAA Subject review in
2000.

The following posts are available from 1 September 2001:

Professor (Ref. 4293)

We require a leading international expert in Hellenistic
Culture with research specialism in Ancient History,
broadly understood. Salary will be by negotiation within
the professorial range.

Lectureship (Ref. 4294)

We are looking for a lecturer with research specialism in
Hellenistic literature and/or thought. Salary will be on
the Lecturer scale £18731 p.a. to £30967 p.a. (current
scales), placement commensurate with the experience of the
successful candidate.

Two Lectureships (Ref. 4295)

Two further permanent posts are also available. One
position is for a specialist in Ancient History, and one
position is for a specialist in any aspect of Classics and
Ancient History. Commencing salary will be £18731 p.a.
(current scales).

Postgraduate Studies

The Leverhulme appointments are also planned to enable an
expansion of postgraduate research studies at Exeter. From
2001 all new research students will take an Advanced
Research Training module, and there will be a new MA
programme in Hellenistic Culture. These are in addition to
our existing MA programmes in Ancient Drama and Society,
Homeric Studies, and Roman Myth and History, and
interdisciplinary programmes in Mediterranean Studies and
Ethics, Religion and Society.

The University of Exeter is supporting the Leverhulme
appointments with £30K additional funding over three years
for postgraduate studentships and a further £30K to enhance
library provision. Bursaries are available for home and
overseas postgraduate students. The Leventis Studentship covers full
overseas fees and maintenance for three years, starting from October
2001. Applications for the MA
programmes and MPhil/PhD research are welcomed For further

Temple University's Intellectual Heritage Program will be hiring a
limited number of Dean's Appointments for the coming year. Dean's
Appointments are one-year positions not on the tenure track. We prefer
candidates who have completed the Ph.D.

The Intellectual Heritage Program is a key element in Temple
University's Core Curriculum and is required of all Temple

sections. In two sequenced courses, the Program traces the western
intellectual tradition from Greek antiquity to the present day.
Students in the program read key authors in the western tradition and
trace ideas and themes that run through the courses. We are
particularly interested in building student writing skills. The program
website provides a good overview of the syllabus and activities of the
program:

http://courses.temple.edu/ih/

The starting salary for this appointment (with Ph.D. in hand) is
$36,500, with benefits. Four classicists currently hold Dean's
Appointments here and have agreed to answer questions about an
employee's perspective on the Program. They are:

Dean's Appointments in the Department of Greek, Hebrew and Roman

Folks,

It is 9:41 PM and I am in a hotel room somewhere east or west of the center of culture prehistorically and historically for the continental united states (i.e. Illinois) and it is just a hair shy of being the two year anniversary of this mailing list.  I have just returned from Val's Pub and Grub with my crew after our first excellent weather day in the field since when it was -20 below in December and we had to shut down because the total station froze, today it was blue skies and mid-40's.  When I returned to my room I logged into to check on the list, and somewhere between finding the base of a structure 24 courses down (FYI Jim T 7 was capped, not at natural) and an Amber Bock at Val's this list topped 4,000 members.

Pretty darn sweet.  Or as my first rate crew often says when I ask them how its going "living the dream, boss, living the dream".  Thanks to all of you who have helped to support and spread the word about this list, from the pocket_gophers on.  And most importantly  be sure to thank those co-moderators who help to make sure your messages get out on time:

Gavin Archer
Trace Clark
Jim Colburn
Seth Johnstone
Jim Pritchard (being added as Australian Moderator - Jim I need your current address)
Colin Carmichael (pending Canada Moderator)

Shake their hand and buy them a drink when you see them.

FYI:  For those of you who might believe Shovelbums to be a money making venture, sales from the book store have generated maybe $100 in the last two years - which is about enough to finally send out a mailing to universities, and firms to complete the evangelizing of this list.  So if I am ever delinquent in getting back with you about your requests, please cut me some slack, as I have a wonderful wife I love to spend time with (who is patient with my work on this list), a great life and job, and am busy as all get out in general :)

A funny note, as I composed this message 3 new members signed on...where you all keep coming from I don't know.

If someone see's Alley tomorrow down near Ft. Bliss tell him Bruce is working out excellent on the New Holland 555 and he should turn Santana down long enough on his 580K to give us a ring during the day.

Best wishes all.
