Under the supervision of the Cultural Resources Manager, this full-time, permanent position will entail project management, including management of budget, staff, and schedule; Phase I, II, and III investigations and mitigation monitoring; preparation of technical reports; analysis of project impacts on archaeological resources under NEPA, CEQA, and NHPA; coordination with local, state, and federal agencies, and mentoring of junior-level staff.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

        Conduct Phase I, Phase II, and III archaeological surveys and evaluations
        Conduct archaeological monitoring
        Conduct record searches at the Information Centers maintained by the California Office of Historic Preservation
        Develop and execute archaeological research designs
        Prepare site records, State of California Historic Resources Inventory forms, Cultural Resources Technical Reports, federal Class I and Class III reports, and Environmental Impact Report/Statement sections relating to archaeological resources

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS:

        Operational knowledge of the prehistory and history of California and the Southwest

        Background in paleontology not required but would be desirable
        Demonstrated writing and research abilities
        Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies for extended periods on a daily basis
        Knowledge of GPS data collection equipment


OTHER SKILLS:  The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, have a professional demeanor and strong organizational skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members as well as manage jobs, as a project manager or tasks, as delegated by project lead.  The candidate must possess strong communication skills, the ability to work closely with clients, and be able to supervise the work of others.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Satisfaction of the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology (36 CFR Part 61) is required. The successful candidate will have a BA/BS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline (MA /MS is preferred), and will have a minimum of five years of field experience, including at least three years in a consulting firm with chargeability requirements.  Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is desirable.  A record of professional research and publication will be favorably viewed.

Just a quick note about the delay in announcing the 2011 field schools.

I am debating whether or not to produce the 2011 ShovelBums Archaeology Field
School Directory this year.  To coordinate, verify, and produce the directory is
fairly labor intensive and the response rate for for institutions who pony up to
pay is mediocre (excluding groups who request prior to submission to have the
fee's waived for financial reasons).  I just want to find out if this is a tool
that is useful to both students and institutions.

positions for our California and Nevada field work. These are seasonal hourly
positions and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week depending on

Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement

Ability to walk long distances and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to
40 pounds.

Tetra Tech is actively seeking to fill on-call Archaeological Field Technician
positions for our California and Nevada field work. These are seasonal hourly
positions and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week depending on
workload. Overtime may be possible. Pay rate will be based on individual
qualifications and experience. Exceptions to the below qualifications may be
made for applicants that can demonstrate comparable experience.

Responsibilities of a Field Technician include:
Working in the field under the supervision of Crew Chiefs and/or Field Directors
in the performance of archaeological fieldwork;
Conducting archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery;
Contributing to team efforts during cultural resources field and lab work;
Taking initiative, resolving problems, and improving procedures to ensure tasks
are completed effectively;
Note taking, map reading, locating and rerecording sites
Complete Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 archaeological site forms,
monitoring forms, and/or excavation forms
Assisting with mapping responsibilities in the field, including drawing sketch
or plan maps and the collection of data using Global Positioning System (GPS)
Trimble units.
Desired Qualifications of a Field Technician include:

Six months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including
survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring in the Great Basin and/or Southern
California desert region;
A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field is
required;
An accredited Field School Certification (or equivalent experience);
Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement
weather, and rugged terrain
Ability to walk long distances and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to
40 pounds.

The Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division is currently seeking an Archaeological Project Leader to work out of their Sacramento Headquarters' Office. This is a seasonal position not to exceed 1500 hours per year. This position will work under the direction of Associate State Archaeologists in the Cultural Program for the OHMVR Division. This position is responsible for assisting in the California Environmental Quality Act and Public Resources Code 5024 review of projects. The incumbent will take the lead in conducting archival research, surveying, test excavating, and monitoring proposed projects. Archaeological survey duties include hiking in all terrain for up to ten hours per day carrying packs of at least 15lbs. Field duties include recording archaeological sites on DPR 523 site records, using a compass, reading USGS topographic maps, and collecting geospatial data using GPS units. This position may include time working with archaeological collections, archival documents, and geographic information systems software. Occasional travel statewide to State Vehicular Recreation Areas will be required. State housing is not available.

Wages: ($13.17 - $15.71/hour)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of experience doing research and field work in archeology, including site survey, excavation, museum laboratory, and exhibit work.  (Graduate work in archeology or anthropology may be substituted for the required experience.)

Education:  B.A. in Anthropology (Archaeology concentration preferred.)

 

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:  American archeological field methods, laboratory and museum techniques, procedures, and operation; California ethnology; New World prehistory, geology, paleontology, zoology, and osteology.

Ability to:  Plan all aspects of a field archeological exploration; plan and direct the work of others; estimate project requirements in terms of tools, equipment, manpower and time; supervise the           application of accepted techniques to specific projects and problems; organize and present technical material           orally or in written form; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

SPECIAL PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Ability and willingness to live in the field under primitive, outdoor conditions; willingness to travel throughout the State; willingness to work long and irregular hours.

We are seeking one Archaeologists/Project Manager for infrastructure projects to include, but not limited to: transportation, telecommunications, and transmission/pipeline.
