Subject: [EntertainmentElectricity] Re: ETCP Certification
I am planning on taking this test with in the next month or two. I
support what I feel the attempt of ESTA is, in regards to this test.
BUT, I do have an issue or two with this test. Please understand
that I started in my career as a stagehand and have moved on to
become a Studio Mechanic (electrician on movies).
In the ETCP electrician handbook it states that this test is to
cover electricians that work on location (as well as stage hands).
The problem is that within the list of topics that this test covers,
it does not seem to cover much in regards to location work. No HMIs,
No batteries and inverters, no generators. But there are
followspots, Moving Lights, power over eithernet, etc. This makes me
think that it is more of a stagehand test than a test for everyone.
I was very suprised at the lack of HMIs. Many opera houses around
this country have HMI units.
I realize that there would be a significant extra expense to make
two tests (like rigging), but stage and location work are 2 very
different worlds.
If a certified electrician were to screw up an HMI rig and somehow
it were to end up in court. The fact that this topic was not covered
by "THE" industry test could make various people look bad (as well as
ESTA).
just my 2 cents.
I am sure that I will have more opinions after I take the test.
I will say that my studing for this test has opened my eyes to a
number of issues on set that many electrians routinely over look
(like resistance). I think just studying for this test has made me a
better electrician.
