Subject: Re: [EntertainmentElectricity] Re: ETCP Certification
I think that the certification system works so well that the various States
should recognize the results, collect a small additional fee, and grant the
successful test takers a license similar to the type given electricians,
plumbers, roofers, and other tradesmen. Once they have a state-issued license,
they can obtain a bond or E&O insurance, and that will make even more attractive
to employers who are willing to offer supplemental compensation for the best of
the best theatrical employees; the money saved on the theatre's insurance rates
would then be available to pay a bonus to those workers whose license and bond
enabled the theatre to save on their insurance premiums. Why to people object to
'professionalizing' our industry?
This would not be a bar to those who want to make our profession their career;
It would only tend to separate the Wheat from the Chaff when it come to persons
who will compete for jobs while waiting for their 'Big Break' as an Actor,
Writer, Director, etc. As a theatrical employer, I already pay for the
continuing education of my employees; the cost of bringing a new employee up to
speed far exceeds the cost of providing educational benefits, including
reimbursal of testing fees, for present employees achieving ETCP Certification
on my watch.
I do not find it uncomfortable to be risk-adverse in this area.
