#114 From: Steve Carter <atom@...>
Date: Fri Dec 10, 2004 10:38 pm
Subject: Introduction and a question
loopout2000
Send Email Send Email

I'm an aspiring race car designer from Phoenix, AZ and I'm using
Solidworks to design a spaceframe chassis for a race car from 1" and 1.25"
round chromoly tubing. The car will be a single seater, maybe openwheeled
car powered by a Yamaha R1 motorcycle engine. Due to the low torque
output and the necessities of racing, weight and stiffness of the finished
car is very important so thinwall (1/16") tubing and plenty of
triangulation will be my design criteria.

So, here's my question ... I am struggling to mate tubes at angles other
than 90 degrees. An example is that, say, I want to attach two tubes,
both round, in sort of a Y configuration similar to the ascii drawing
below:

---------- A
----------
    \ \ )
     \ \
      \ \
        B

The tubes can be attached at any angle represented by the ) usually at
angles of 30-150 degrees.

I don't understand the process, within Solidworks, for creating two parts,
each tubes, and then cutting the fishmount on tube B so it fits within a
very tight tolerance around tube B. I understand the actual manufacturing
process which is to use a three axis mill or lathe tooling to create the
end cut on one tube.

FWIW, and for those that don't know, very tight tolerances (.020") are
needed in the fitting of the tubes to avoid or minimize 'pull together' of
the gaps and resulting distortion of the finished assembly.

Hello All:

I am a new member and also a solidworks rookie (been using for
about a year) - I have a copy of 2004 office version - I finally got
arrounf to learning to use the toolbox and right of the bat I hit a
snag - when I select the screw I want to add to an assembly the part
manager does not show a thumbnail of the part, but it does show the
name of the part, either way you cant drag a part into the assembly -
its almost like the program is looking in the wrong place for the
part database? - does anyone have any ideas on how to correct this
problem??

  thanks in advance......

I've been using 2005 for a few weeks, seems pretty good for an 'early release', I've had a few CDT's when fixing assy mates, and a few other oddities, but overall I've been pleased. So far much better than SW2004 SP0.

Anything in particular you're wondering about?

Hello Whit,
Thanks for the quick response! I'm basically trying to evaluate
overall functionality. I know there is an issue with SW2005 SP0.0
not working with PDMWorks, which is why SolidWorks pushed out SP0.1
very quickly, but during this intiial phase of testing, there really
doesn't seem to be any "showstoppers". Have you encountered any of
the "SolidWorks will now terminate due to an unhandled error"
conditions (app crashes) in SW2005?

Thanks Again,
Bill (Celticgent1963)

We don't use PMDWorks so I can't speak of that. Again yesterday I crashed it, pushed it a little too far and -poof, it was gone, twice. But I find that these crashes seem to happen when I'm trying new things and maybe I'm not doing them the SWX way <?> Once I was tring some fancy surfacing, on a part that had a lot of rolled back features, and in those features were a few 'cherries' telling me of some errors- I was going to fix them later... Another crash was when I was using the new exploded view animation in an assembly, creating an avi, pretty cool once I got it working though....

We've prettymuch commited to 2005, and I haven't found any real 'Show Stoppers', just save often, very often, and hope SP1 shows up soon.

Hope this helps,
Whit

Hey All,

A buddy of mine, in a local consulting firm, is looking for the
following:

- SolidWorks designer (would consider Pro-E also)
- engineering background or equivalent experience designing
electronic enclosures
- around $40 an hour for 30-40 hours a week for a month or so
- currently located in the Cary, NC area

Let me know if you know of anyone that is looking for something
temporary and fits the bill then please send me a e-mail.

Have a great week (hopefully a profitable one too).

Hi,

I'm new to SolidWorks (I have 2005).

I see how to "join" parts but I would like to remove a part from
another. I see an extrude remove, a revolve remove, etc, but nothing
about just a "remove this part from this part and leave me the
difference" (as a new part or as the old part). I know it's there
somewhere.

Thanks!

Let me clarify. I'm workign in an assembly context. I see how to do a
boolean with parts but I have an assembly that I want to cut from
another assembly.

Thanks. Maybe. Cavity looks to be part based, right? If I
can "degenerate" my assembly to a part then maybe I'd be good to go.

While I have an assembly opened in SW2005, in this one case I have 2
Feature Model Design Trees on the left side. I can't seem to turn
one off. What's up with this? Where do I shut one down? It's not
causing any problems but I'm mad at myself for not finding where to
turn one off.

Thanks!

It is a standard feature.  The bar usually resides at the top.  You may have accidentally drug in down.  This allows you to select in the tree without having to scroll so much.  If you deal with long trees, it can be a real time saver.

Subject: API Question
aerologic_psw
Send Email Send Email

Do we have SW API experts here? I have a problem that is probably
easy. Once I get past this I'll be OK. I've been modifying
dimensions OK via macros but now I need to modify a parameter in a
feature. A circular pattern to be exact. I can't seem to get a good
object to use. Here is a couple of lines:

     'Dim circPattern As SldWorks.Feature
     Dim circPattern As CircularPatternFeatureData

I've tried both of the above.

     Set circPattern = Part.FeatureByName("CirPattern2@.6M Tank-
1@.61M FMP Tank with Baffles/Tank Baffle-1@.6M Tank")

The above object comes back as "Nothing" so I'm doing something
wrong. Of course I can't continue to modify the pattern.

By the way this circular pattern is in a part in an assembly which
is in a parent assembly. So he pattern is a child of a part which is
a child of an assembly which is a child of another assembly.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi All,

I know it is in SW 2005 somewhere but I can't find it. I want to
place some additional information on a vertex, edge, or face, or
volume for that matter. I would call them attributes. Normally they
are integer, real, or string. Ultimately I want to access this
information from the SW API. Can anybody give me a vector? I can't
find anything in help but it just has to be there.

Thanks!

When I start a sketch, I get this "cross" at the pointer. I have
never seen this before. I also have lost my horizontal and
vertical "guides" when I draw a line.
Some setting or option has changed, but I am not sure what I did.
Can someone tell me what needs to be changed?
