Mine is actually 3250, not 3270.

I got brave this morning & took the fan unit out. It had a bunch of
lint in it. I blew it out & put it back in. No fan error message now!
I am going to replace the thermal compound, also. Hopefully it will be
okay. But I am not real optimistic since, like you said, they have a
lot of fan issues.

I have used this laptop a lot & my only complaint is the video card
will not play one of the games I like.

Thanks for replying, David. Good Luck with yours.

Connie - I did that for over a year myself, however one night it didn't go to sleep as usual, overheated the processor (you could smell it) and that in-turn corrupted the hard drive.  Just be sure you are with it when running at all times and verify it sleeps/shuts down when you expect it to.

I have been getting the following error on booting:

"CPU FAN error. Please check it. press F1 to resume"

I then let windows start & choose "turn off computer". For the last 2
days this happens every time I boot.

It happened once last month but it was okay when I restarted it a few
days later. I continued to use it every day until yesterday.

I bought a replacement fan but it turned out to be the wrong one. It
is a E-12 S041019G. My laptop has a E12K S050422B.

Does anyone know what is causing this error & could I switch just the
fan itself?

Thanks,
gg

Hi all, well, the LCD screen latch finally broke on my 3120X. I've
found one place on line that sells replacements, but, they want almost
50 bucks for the thing! Has anyone else had to replace theirs, or,
know of a cheaper source?

Thanks,

I understand that a 512MB 144-pin PC133 SDRAM SODIMM is required. Any
recommendations re brands or RAM sources?

And would you recommend flashing the BIOS from r101 to r110?

Your advice is welcome, and thank you for your time.

You can search the forum messages for specific brands that people have
found that worked or didn't. I would make sure you buy from a vendor
that will allow you to return the RAM if it doesn't work for you.

I've always had good results with using 4Allmemory.com for know
exactly which RAM to use in other workstations.

Their website listed the 3120X, but indicated that it could only go to
384MB. Armed with postings from Sotec forums I ordered enough ram to
bring it to 512MB.

And, what do you know, they were right. It just went beep-beep-beep
and refused to boot. I ended up sending it back for the stick that
brought it up to 384mb, which worked perfectly.

So, if there's a firmware upgrade needed, I don't know about it. The
AMIBIOS says it's version 1.30 copyright 2000. If there is an
upgrade, where would one find it? How reliable is it, given some of
these were built in China, some in Taiwan? I'm really not wanting to
turn a functioning notebook into a paperweight just to add 128mb of
RAM. I just recently succeeded in swapping the drive for a 100GB
Hitachi.

Hey guys, the original hard drive in my Sotec just failed on me. I
tried everything to restart it; Freezer, banging... screaming, all of
which did not work(The Screaming almost did though...). From some
research I found that the Hard drive (Fujitsu Model: MHR2020AT) uses
the ATA 100 interface. My question is if I have to get a replacement
hard drive that uses ATA 100......can I get one that uses ATA-6? I had
a lot of problems finding a larger hard drive using the ATA 100
interface. Oh, and is it possible to upgrade those usb ports to USB
2.0(I noticed a little plug)?

Thank YOU,
Mike

I have a 3120X manufactured 11/2002, factory ID 1.

About a month ago I put a Hitatchi 100GB 7200/8MB Mobile PATA HD drive
in it, Tiger Direct part number H450-r042 BM and it has worked
perfectly thus far. No fit problems. I had a running 20GB drive
already, so I cloned it with XXCLone, and that actually worked
perfectly too.

I tried to make the clone process run fact with a Zonet 2 port 2.0 USB
card, and putting the new drive in an Ultra USB external case. I thin
k that did work for cloning, but it wouldn't boot off that external
2.0 USB. the Zonet card did function fine for doing high-speed USB
transfers.

it works just fine.

You can't... the video processing is on the motherboard. There is no separate video card (this is true of most laptops).

Although you can't upgrade the video card, I believe in the bios you can adjust
the RAM set aside for video from 8M to 16M or 32M. Without looking I can't say
for sure. It's not the same as upgrading your video, but might help depending
on what your needs are.

I'd love to get more info on the Sotec 3120X and cannot access any

Is there a way to contact the group owner regarding this? (the generic

Post it to your (or other free) webspace and send a link to download it.  Makes big files easy.

Reasons of Hard Drive Controller Failure and Data Recovery

When you are working on you computer and get an error message- 1782 Disk Controller failure and it gives you the option to go into the boot or BIOS. When you try to boot it, it fails and displays just a black screen. When you boot it with bootable CD and try install the Operating system, it allows you to install but when you restart the system, it display some other error messages and fails. It may be a strange problem for you and may put you in trouble.

This problem most commonly happens because of the disk controller failure. Disk controller is a circuit that allows your computer to communicate with hard drive. Today, hard drives contain inbuilt disk controllers. For instance, hard drive called "SCSI drive" has in-built SCSI drive controllers.

We suspect the motherboard is bad after talking to Averatec support. When it
starts up a lot of gibberish scrolls on a blue screen, and we could not get
Windows to open.

It has been used a lot & has some wear on the places my hands rested.
The screen is fine, it has the battery, and I am sure there are many useful
parts in it.

The hard drive & cord are not included. I have bought an adapter so I can still
use the hard drive and we had just replaced the cord so & I am keeping it in
case I can use it with another laptop in the future.

I am asking $45 plus shipping charges or you can pickup if you are in the DFW
area.

In the pictures, part of the case had been unscrewed. We haven't been able to
find these screws.
