The speakers I saw using it are educated speakers and live outside of
the U.S. (One lives in Mexico and the other two in Spain; this is also
one who is from Argentina). Maybe I'm misinterpreting your post in
English. (The example of "sentirse desfallecer" is included in the
English-Spanish Oxford dictionary. So, no, it's not from Chicano
speech.)
