This may well be the shortest length of time I've ever been a member of a group.
I joined just last week, to talk about Stapeliads.
To everyone who feels the need to reply to the highly emotive and contentious
issues posted here which have nothing to do with Stapeliads, you need to realise
that this sort of thing happens with every mailing list and group of every type.
It is a hi-jack, and I've seen it time and time again, reducing a group to pulp
and making it unusable. Hard as it may be to do so, you need to ignore these
types of messages and get back to talking about Stapeliads.
Please note that this forum is dedicated to stapeliads.

Hello all on the list! Can't say for sure if I've ever posted a pic of one of my plants, but figured now would be a good time...so we can get back to some Stapeliads! :)
This is my Huernia erectiloba, blooming.
Hope I attach the pix correctly. (not sure what file size is too large)
As a Danish citizen I Do feel the need to reply to the pictures placed here... even though it doesn't concern Staps.
Denmark DOES NOT approve of these whale killings and has asked the Faeroe Islands to stop this barbaric slaughter years ago. This yearly "fiesta" on the Faeroes used to be a place where people on the islands parted the food caught. Today, however, the whales are barely eatable due to toxics. And this is NOT due to the Faeroes!!!
The slaughtering has almost stopped... guess why... and, as others mentioned, the pictures are years old.

thank you for the nice pictures you sent - they are informative und not to large. But unfortunately this is not Huernia erectiloba. The corolla lobes of H. erectiloba have to be erect or somewhat incurved - but never flattish. The corona (that is the structure in the middle of the corolla tube) is creme-coloured, most plants with red margins.
Please take a look on that structures.
I have no idea what species your plant is - some Huenia plowesii have also those pentagonal annuli - but they don't have so many hairs inside the corolla tube - and the tube is much more distinct.
Thank you so much for your observations on my plant and its identity. I will take a look into those characteristics & see what I can find. Silly me, for not paying attention...to the indicator of the species name...meaning erect lobes! When it first bloomed, I compared it the photos in the database at stapeliads.info & thought I had a match...BUT...looking again now, see I missed that point altogether. :(
I bought this in the past year from a reputable dealer at the show/sale of the San Diego Cacti & Succulent Society, so I did not question its label.
Looking at the stapeliad.info database again, H. plowesii is looking like a good candidate. The pix show the corona looking the same as in my blooms-which I tried to snap. I've attached a few more pix (I found more I took the 2nd time it bloomed in early Oct.). Maybe it will help someone help me to figure this out. :) I included the best pic I could get of the white specks I was able to see at the bottom of the tube. Maybe mine is a hybrid.

We are having temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius and after the cold, wet winter we had, my Stapeliad are rejoicing!
I was lucky to be able to photograph three of them at the same time. They are (clock-wise from the top) Huernia occulta, Huernia clavigera and Huernia campanula. I received the seeds of the last one with that name but I believe it is named Huernia barbata now.
Thanks to everybody for all the sharing of beautiful photos and knowledge!

You are right - Bruyns changed the name definitly - but I would prefer to keep also H. campanulata with using both names. Now Huernia barbata encloses so many different flower types. Bruyns decided to lump the three species together because there are many transitions of those species in habitat.
But the name H. campanulata describes one flower type - a bicampanulate flower with those big hairs (like a basebal bat) in the corolla tube - outside only small papillae (more or less), corolla lobes broader than long.
Huernia clavigera (now also H. barbate) has those baseball bat hairs all over the corolla, getting smaller to the tips of the corolla lobes. Corolla is campanulat and the corolla lobes longer than broad.

Dear Fanda,
the source for the plants is Exotica (Ernst Specks) a nursery in Germany.
Nurseries are as good as there seed sources are. I could ask Ernst about the
history of this plant because he's abroud now. But I know that Ernst and
Dennis de Kock exchanges plants.
Labelmixing is always possible. Nobody is perfect. But I'm convinced that
that plant on Stapeliad info are not a real Rh. macrolobum. It doesn't fit
with the decription. Yes, you are right, they are more macrolobum than
ciliatum - but neither the first nor the second species for sure.
So for me it's a hybrid - may be a natural hybrid (because of the collection
number) - that may be possible too.
But I will wait for Ernst to ask him - you will get answers in winter.
best regards
Friederike

Hello,
I am not an expert for genus Rhytidocaulon, but I think the plant in the
picture is R. macrolobum, not a hybrid.
This one in the picture looks exactly like that one in the picture of Dennis
De Kock on Stapeliads.info, I hope that authors did not make any mistake,
but of course, it can happen. And besides, I think that hybrid of R.
ciliatum and R. macrolobum would like more different, than this one which is
very similar to R. macrolobum, or actually it is R. macrolobum.
I also purchased 2 plants labeled R. ciliatum from Ernst Specks this year
and it flowered like macrolobum. And among R. macrolobums I found R.
ciliatum. So it seems that someone has just mixed up labels in the nursery.
Or the seeds, yeah, they can fly :D
Best wishes,
Fanda

I think this may be a hybrid of R. splendidum and macrolobum, Ernst had seed of what was supposed to be true splendidum but when the seedlings flowered they obviously had macrolobum blood. He also had true ciliatum for sale at the same time and possibly the labels got mixed.
Attached is a photo of one of the hybrids given to me by Ernst, also one of the ciliatum.

Dear Carol,
nice to see your seedlings in bloom!

I was lucky to reach Ernst between two travel tours. I think he can bringt light in our confusion.
We three - Uli Tränkle, John and me - were the only people to whom Ernst hand out those Rhyt. splendidum hybrid seedlings. After seeing 20% in bloom, he throw the hole seedling charge away. So mixing up the labels with those plants is not possible.
But your seedling shows, that the hairs at the tips of the corolla lobes are rare. Comparing the pictures and description of Rh. macrolobum shows the variance of hair growing. Some have no hairs, some a few, some up to 10-15 hairs on each corolla lobe tip.
The plant Peter shows has much more hairs and not a real "thump" on the second half of the lobes.
Ernst told me about a seedling charge of R. ciliatum he sold last to this year. First blooming plant were real ciliatum (he always wait for some flowers before he transfer the seedlings to the shop) - but after some month some plants were flowering like that plant Peter showed us. There were either real R. ciliatum or R. ciliatum hybrids in the shop. After recognizing this he seperate well-definde R. ciliatum from the hybrids and plants without flowers - and throw this part away too.
He told me, that macrolobum and cilliatum alway have self set seeds every year, but the possibility of havings hybrid seeds ist high even if you have many mother plants standing together.
I found a very informative picture of a hybrid between R. ciliatum and R. macrolobum minimum. The amount of hairs at the tip of the corolla lobes are quite similar to the flower Peter showed us.
I think this may be a hybrid of R. splendidum and macrolobum, Ernst had seed of what was supposed to be true splendidum but when the seedlings flowered they obviously had macrolobum blood. He also had true ciliatum for sale at the same time and possibly the labels got mixed.

I have extras of about half, but when you publish a wish list or sales list you need to put down your location due to international regulations dealing with permits.

I'm living in Marseille, FRANCE, where I grow my plants on a balcony. I protect
them from the rain. If it's too cold, I put them in the living room lol but it
is rarely necessary here. And you?
Tistou :-)
Hello Martyn, I made several order to kakteen-haage and each time I'm very
satisfy with their plants. But they don't have most of the plants in my
wish-list. I have not tried eden plants, thanks for the address.

Hello.
I'm a beginner. In February I started some Stapelia, Huernix, and Edithcolea
grandis seeds. The first two are doing wonderfully, many branches, etc. The
Edithcolea grandis are basically stalled at one stem, maybe 6 inches long, with
no branching. They are (for the winter here in Montreal) in a south window with
sun for about 4 hours of the day. Is there any cultural point in particular for
E grandis that is good to know? Or is this pretty standard?
Thanks.
Joe
If you get them through this winter it will be easier next year. I got my seedlings through their first winter by watering with an eye dropper, like 5 drops once per week.
