The annual Amazon Web Services (AWS) Start-up Challenge is back with an expanded worldwide footprint! This annual contest, launched in 2007, is a way for promising start-ups to get noticed and compete for an opportunity to win up to $100,000 in cash and AWS credits. Eligible start-ups that are using the AWS cloud computing platform can submit an entry into the contest which describes their business plan and use of AWS paid services.

This year, we will select 15 regional semi-finalists: 5 each from the Americas, Asia Pacific (including Japan), and EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa), respectively, who will each receive $2,500 in AWS credits. From these, we will select a minimum of 6 finalists to be awarded a package of $10,000 in AWS credits and a trip to Palo Alto, California, to attend the final round of judging. Then, after a day of meetings with our judges, we will announce one grand prize winner at a public event for start-ups and investors. The winner will receive a package that includes $50,000 in cash and $50,000 in AWS credits. Read more about the full prize list.

I'm not sure how other women in this forum feel, but could these unnecessary,
sexist jokes be avoided? So uncomfortable, out of place, and disturbing to read.
As a female, I feel offended. Treat professional women with a bit of respect,
for her professional work and not merely *as a woman* that you can hit on.

Denger2 the next meetup will be about women in startup? A point should be made
about eliminating sexism and sexist work in the workplace, because that's a
major annoyance for women in tech.

Sorry if I'm overreacting, but really can't resist to say something.

You're seeing it wrong.

One way to stop sexism is by NOT doing a special topic about women in tech. As it implicitly says that women in tech are something out of the ordinary, worthy of its' own talkshow. THAT is sexist. You don't set topics specifically about men in tech do you?

What Rhein is doing on the other hand, is not sexism. If anything, it's the beginnings of a sexual harrasment suit. :)
As guy kawasaki said, don't look for sexism where none exist.

I'm not sure how other women in this forum feel, but could these unnecessary, sexist jokes be avoided? So uncomfortable, out of place, and disturbing to read. As a female, I feel offended. Treat professional women with a bit of respect, for her professional work and not merely *as a woman* that you can hit on.

Denger2 the next meetup will be about women in startup? A point should be made about eliminating sexism and sexist work in the workplace, because that's a major annoyance for women in tech.

You're seeing it wrong.

One way to stop sexism is by NOT doing a special topic about women in tech. As it implicitly says that women in tech are something out of the ordinary, worthy of its' own talkshow. THAT is sexist. You don't set topics specifically about men in tech do you?

What Rhein is doing on the other hand, is not sexism. If anything, it's the beginnings of a sexual harrasment suit. :)
As guy kawasaki said, don't look for sexism where none exist.

sy sebetulnya sudah sejak lama pemakai pivotal tracker[1] dan sangat menyukai workflownya, cuma sejak PT berbayar udah gak make lagi (kecuali projek eksternal yg di-invite oleh klien), sejak saat itu sy pindah ke redmine ... ya "redmine works",  tapi gak begitu suka dgn workflownya, diam2 sy merindukan tool yg mirip seperti PT

sampai kemudian akhir pekan kemaren client sy mengenalkan saya kpd Asana, setelah dicoba... wew ini dia akhirnya nemu workflow seperti PT, secara personal sy lebih suka Asana[2] ketimbang PT, asana terasa lebih simple dan juga GRATIS he he

btw, proyek ini masih beta, di Firefox 3 sy ada warning kalo browsernya gak disupport, alhasil terpaksa memakai safari buat menggunakan ini ... yeah gak masalah buat sy, toh yg penting workflownya yg sy suka

mudah2an setelah Asana resmi launching, masih tetap menawarkan paket gratis :D ... dan sy berharap versi smartphonenya pun segera dirilis, karena sy menemukan bahwa Asana juga bisa digunakan untuk me-manage task2 yg lebih general (bukan cuma programming aja)

well ini sekedar sharing aja, mohon maaf kalo rekan2 udah pada tau :)

Lack of women in tech is a real problem - it needs to be discussed. Lowering
admission standard and setting 'diversity quota' are sexist. Encouraging women
to do CS is not. I agree that in the workplace, women should not be treated
differently - that's why I think jokes about professional women are out of
place.

Let's agree to disagree. I think making jokes about women in workplace is
sexist.

Lack of women in tech is a real problem - it needs to be discussed. Lowering admission standard and setting 'diversity quota' are sexist. Encouraging women to do CS is not. I agree that in the workplace, women should not be treated differently - that's why I think jokes about professional women are out of place.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Pelaku usaha industri alas kaki mengeluhkan berbagai hambatan yang mengganggu bisnis mereka. Yang utama adalah pasokan bahan baku yang minim, premanisme, dan pungutan liar di sekitar pabrik.

Eddy Widjanarko, Ketua Umum Asosiasi Persepatuan Indonesia (Aprisindo) menjelaskan, industri alas kaki, khususnya sepatu, kerap kesulitan mendapatkan pasokan bahan baku terutama kulit. Pasalnya, pabrik penyamakan kulit dalam negeri masih sangat sedikit. Di sisi lain, impor bahan baku kulit juga terhadang regulasi yang berbelit-belit.

Menurut Eddy, waktu yang dibutuhkan untuk mendatangkan bahan baku impor, mulai karantina sampai di pabrik, bisa mencapai satu hingga tiga minggu.

Proses yang berbelit ini praktis memperlambat proses produksi alas kaki. "Kami sudah sampaikan hal ini ke Kementerian Perdagangan. Kami mohon agar ada koordinasi dengan Bea dan Cukai sehingga prosesnya tak terlalu lama," ujar Eddy, baru-baru ini.

Selain ketersediaan bahan baku, perusahaan alas kaki juga sering menghadapi hambatan sosiokultural di sekitar kawasan pabrik. Harly Widiyanto, Manajer Senior Sumber Daya Manusia PT Chang Shin Indonesia menuturkan, perusahaan asal Korea Selatan itu sebenarnya baru saja mengoperasikan pabrik di Karawang, Jawa Barat, awal tahun silam.

Pabrik ini memiliki kapasitas produksi sekitar 350.000 pasang sepatu per bulan. Meski sudah mengantongi izin pendirian pabrik, Chang Shin acap kali menghadapi tindakan premanisme dari warga setempat yang meminta pungutan liar ke pabrik sepatu olahraga merek Nike itu.

Akan ada pelatihan

Kondisi tersebut diperparah oleh perilaku oknum pemerintah daerah (pemda) setempat yang meminta pungutan tambahan dan proses perizinan yang sengaja dibuat berbelit-belit. Apalagi, perusahaan itu tidak menemukan perlakuan serupa di China atau Vietnam.

Di samping itu, Chang Shin juga mengeluhkan pasokan tenaga kerja terampil yang terbatas. Akibatnya, pengusaha harus menggelontorkan investasi tambahan untuk melatih mereka. "Masalah-masalah seperti itu membuat langkah kami lambat," jelas Herly.

Menteri Perdagangan Mari Elka Pangestu berjanji bakal menindaklanjuti keluhan dari pengusaha. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan tenaga kerja, Mari memastikan akan mendorong daerah agar memberikan pelatihan kepada warga yang masuk kategori angkatan kerja. "Sudah ada beberapa daerah seperti Jawa Timur, yang punya anggaran untuk pelatihan," ujarnya.

Untuk meminimalisasi aksi premanisme, Kementerian Perdagangan berjanji akan berkordinasi dengan beberapa pihak seperti Kementerian Dalam Negeri dan pemda setempat. "Kami akan berusaha agar pemerintah daerah bisa menjamin keamanan daerah sehingga iklim usaha di tempat tersebut lebih kondusif," kata Mari. (Veri Nurhansyah Tragistina/Kontan)

Halo mas Edy dan rekan2 #StartupLokal semuanya,


The CTO Club akan dimulai bulan pertengahan September 2011, dan dijalankan monthly. Klub ini akan menjadi bagian dari #StartupLokal. Untuk yang belum tahu, the CTO Club ini ditargetkan bukan hanya untuk para CTO, tapi juga semua yang tertarik dengan teknikal, tapi lebih ke teknologi tingkat tinggi seperti cloud, scalability, nosql, web scraping, regex, server optimization dll. Segmen pertama adalah pembicara yang sharing ttg teknik-teknik atau teknologi yang digunakan untuk webnya, dan benefit/loss yang dia dapatkan dalam memanfaatkan teknologi tersebut. Segmen kedua adalah semacam konsultasi 'dokter', dimana ada founder yg sharing tentang masalahnya dan rekan-rekan yang lain memberikan masukan atau bahkan solusi.

Rencananya untuk event ini berbayar (should be ok for CTO's right? I am looking at Rp 50K-100K, this includes dinner. Kenapa berbayar, krn komunitas ini akan berukuran kecil sekali, dan most probable akan sulit untuk mendapatkan sponsor. Require input here) dan bentuknya membership (instant membership, bisa register di tempat) tapi harus menandatangani NDA, karena kemungkinan besar banyak informasi yang disharing yang berisi jeroan yang highly confidential dan classified, dan memang eksklusif dibahas di The CTO Club ini saja. Bottom line, The CTO Club ini ada untuk memperkaya pengetahuan para CTO (dan calon CTO) dan mempercepat penyelesaian masalah. Akan ada milisnya juga, dimana member milis itu hanya untuk yg sudah register dan menandatangani NDA. (need input for this too).

Kita juga mempersiapkan program bernama "One Hour with Founder" (still working on the name, any inputs welcome). Basically, setiap minggu akan ada satu founder/mentor yang ngomong. Udah lama kepikiran gimana caranya supaya Jakarta bisa dimasukin ke "Never Mind the Valley" series seperti Beijing dan Bangalore. Karena event #StartupLokal ramai, banyak incubator seperti Project Eden, banyaknya startup yang diakuisisi, dsb. Gimana kalau teman-teman #StartupLokal menulis secara kolaborasi biar Jakarta bisa dimasukin ke series itu. Apalagi disini kita ada jagoan penulis buku, Gw pikir ini momentum yang bagus untuk startup di Indonesia untuk bisa dapat eksposure seluas itu.
