Mark,

Plenty of great software out their...like scopes and eyepieces, a lot
of what you like may simply be personal preference.

It is well worth checking out the freeware program "Cartes du Ciel":

http://www.stargazing.net/astropc/index.html

It is as powerful and full-featured as many of the
planetarium/charting programs out there. Only costs you a little
time if you don't like it, and it may serve your needs. Also a very
nice freeware lunar charting program from the same source:

http://astrosurf.com/avl/UK_index.html

and a Yahoo Group for discussion of the product:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/skychart-discussion/

If you own a Palm Pilot, I recommend Planetarium:

http://www.aho.ch/pilotplanets/

While not as full-featured as the larger PC programs, it has the
enormous advantage
that it goes with you to the eyepiece. No more printing charts or
lugging laptops:

I use SKyChart III, myself. What I like about the software is that it has some
very accurate algorithms, and also has some very cool additional features, like
"find configuration". This feature allows one to predict occultations, eclipses
and transits based on the angular distances of objects in the sky. ANY two
objects can be used within its database [configurable and can be added to
(comets, asteriods, new planetoids, whatever)] for this feature.

It was one of the first programs to do a good job with chart prints, though most
of them do a great job now, too. Flat maps of planets can be imported and used
in lieu of its default maps. This has the advantage of optimizing, for example,
a Jovian map to allow the program to display the correct position of the GRS
when its Sys II longitude varies.

I like it, and it isn't that expensive. Around US$50 currently, I believe.

Darren.

Or, if you own a PocketWin-based PDA, there's TheSky Pocket Edition.
Like Steve says, these PDA software packages are great tools in the
field. They will never replace the desktop software for planning
observing sessions, etc., but when using TheSkyPE I seldom have to
refer to printed charts while observing.

I use SkyMap and SkyMap Pro as desktop programs.

The June issue of Sky & Telescope magazine (pg. 130) has an article on DSLR
astrophotography with recommendations on choosing equipment. While clearly
a price/performance leader, the Canon EOS Rebel has two drawbacks in astro
applications: no mirror lockup, and it can't use the remote timer. Both of
these features are highly desirable, but you could use the "hat trick"
method as a workaround. I'm sure the camera can be modified, but this costs
more money. The Canon 10D has all these features, as well as a metal body
standard.

Price matters of course, so I'd suggest you consider purchasing online/mail
order. This can save you hundreds of dollars.

The "Russian Hack" that Jay did to his camera implements a number of
features ... one of which is mirror lockup. I remember when he first
started using it he had to buy a remote cable/controller to get the
timer feature.

I use a combination of a few different programs. I use Starry Night
for my desktop and to begin my planning. I use Astroplanner for
making up my actual plans for the night and then I use TheSky in the
field for telescope control.

I have used some desktops like Starry Nights. But my favorite is 2 Sky on my
Palm. Very easy to use. And with 2 Red, you can turn your Palm display to
red. Works very nicely with my T3.

We had many phone calls on the 102 apo blem. I told many people it
had been sold. Turns out, the guy who bought it just called to say
he has financial problems. So the 102 apo blem from Shingletown is
back up for sale! Call me if interested. You will save hundreds and
the performance is top rate. I will keep everyone's phone number
this time!

I will be demonstrating a number of apo telescopes at the annual
SVAS Star B Que next new moon. I may have another blem 102V
available after that.

We are moving into a larger facility (twice the size) as I speak.
Fortunately for us, we have 30 days in which to move and the move is
only next door. We now are a two roll up door business! Far cry from
the garage 4 years ago. So I will be pulling together all of the
junk we have been storing in a separate storage facility (which we
are moving out of) and I will have a moving sale. I will pull this
together over the next week. Lotsa one of a kind items, etc. We will
dump them at ridiculous prices but we do not want them back, so all
sales will be final. I will have it ready, hopefully, next week.

In the midst of all this moving, I am still working full time on the
new 115 apos. Nine employees are working around me. The new shop is
really going to improve our delivery time as we will not be so
cramped. We have spent this past six months designing all of the
workstations. It will be a much better place when we are finally
moved in. We will also have a small showroom with all 12 telescopes
on display. The showroom should open around September 1.

I will keep you are posted here.

Hi Vic,

That's great to hear you are getting the space you need. Any chance of a
"grand opening"

of the new place on September 1st? I'd love to win one of them fine
Stellarvue hats in a

raffle! ;-)

Best of luck in the new digs.

When the question was first asked I was thinking desktop/laptop
astro programs not handheld. I should have mentioned 2Sky which is
the program I use the most. The latest version has a choice of color
gray or red screen. I even take my palm with me when I walk the
dogs.

Hi:

I received my new Losmandy DR 125 rings today and happily replaced my SV 78-S
back atop my LX200. I noticed (for the first time) that the retractable dew
shield moves in response to the OTA's orientation: when the OTA is vertical, the
dew shield "falls", due to its weight, to the fully retracted position. Slewing
east and west, the dew shield moves forward. I assume there is a felt pad
between the OTA and shield since I can see small felt fibers.

Is there a solution to this?

Thanks.

Hi all--
I used to use Planetarium on my old Palm which was very good even
with the monochrome screen. Now I use an Ipaq and just today I got
Pocket Stars for Pocket PC from Nomad Electronics--just getting to
know it now but a very nice display, nice set of options, even
includes some navigation tools. Has red-screen option too. Looks
like a good deal for $15.

On my desktop I use Starry Night Pro. Has anybody tried Desktop
Planetarium--good reviews but very expensive...be interesting to hear
if it's worth the high $.

Hi Adam,

I believe there is a solution to this problem. I
remember reading, some time ago, that Stellarvue has
additional felt pads available to increase the
friction between the lens cell and the dew shield.
I'd give SV a call or email them. I'm sure they'll
help you out.

Well, I was sold on Pocket Sky; used on my Casio Pocket PC. But
then I jumped from a Palm m130 to a Palm T3. Suddenly
Planetarium "was alive!". Since then, I have not even looked at
Pocket Sky, as Planetarium on the T3 is awesome on the 340x480
screen; especially in the landscape view. I also like ability to
input your own object data directly into Palm, where Pocket Sky
requires going though Sky on your Mother PC. Pocket Sky is long
overdue for an upgrade, and now that Sky 6 is done, maybe that might
happen. But IMO, today, Planetarium is the more useful PDA
program. On my laptop, I have The Sky, Cartes du Ciel, and Guide.

My Nighthawk came with an extra felt pad just for this purpose I'm

Hi Dave:

What is the procedure for adding the felt pad between the shield and OTA? Does
the shield fully come off of the OTA?

My Nighthawk came with an extra felt pad just for this purpose I'm
sure Vic would be glad to supply you with a replacement.

For those who may not be aware, Astronomics has purchased Cloudy
Nights from Alister St Clair. I guess Astronomics feels a need to
compete with Anacortes, who owns Astromart, plus Alister was getting
burned out by the time taken to maintain the site. Mike at
Astronomics says there will be few, if any changes (at least
immediately). The biggest change will be that the Cloudy Nights
Reports, which previously required a subscription, will now be free.

I think we all owe Alister St Clair a hearty thanks for all he's done
for our hobby in creating and maintaining this valuable resource to
our hobby.

Adam,

Here is what the manual for my Nighthawk says.

"1. Remove the dust cover and unscrew the tapered ring from the
dewshield. Turn the ring and not the dewshield.

2. Slide off the dewshield rotating it clockwise as you pull it off.

3. Add two or three strips of the adhesive velvet over the existing
velvet making sure the edges are adhered to the surface.

4. Replace thw dewshield making sure the velvet is fitted under the
edge so it does not pull up. Rotate the shield clockwise as you
carefully install it.

5. Screw the tapered ring back onto the rear of the dewshield.

Note: The dewshield should never be rotated counterclockwise when
moving the dewshield in or out. This can start to unscrew the main
lens. If this happenes, the main lens can be screwed back into the
main tube with out consequence but it should be avoided.

Never touch the lens cell retainer located on the front of the lens
cell."

Hope this helps.

David

Thanks, Dave. Vic has likewise responded and told me that all new scopes are
shipped with the adhesive felt pads and adjustment instructions. My scope is ~
7-9 months old, so maybe this is a recent issue? Well, in any event, the scope
is otherwise flawless so I look forward to what sounds like an easy fix.

Have a nice 4th.

Great idea and that is something to consider later but with the move
and all the new items, there just isn't enough time. I will take
pictures of the new facility and the party and post them on the site
though.

Hi Mike,

I didn't mean the comment in a derogatory manner. Herb gets a lot of
mileage out of his association with Astromart, and it just makes good
business sense for you, as one of the major national astronomy
retailers, to have your name associated with a well-known website like
Cloudy Nights. Thanks for assuming the sponsorship and ensuring that
the resource remains available to all of us.

Jim
Trying to figure out the best way to spend my $20 credit ;-)
