Yeah, I know, I'm just figuring that with XMPP, you could get all the
goodness and ease of use that mDNS gives you across subnets without
the headaches of multicast routing.

Hi,

I have a number of Python files which contain classes as well as
module-level functions. Unfortunately the Python mode is unable to
distinguish between functions which are members of a class and those
that are not. This makes the function popup rather misleading (see
screenshot 1, rtrim() and the following functions are not members of
class ZertHd).

I used Python's whitespace requirements to hack around this. Replace
the Defs symbol in RegexSymbols.xml with these two symbols:

This might be too hacky to make in into the regular distribution, but
hopefully someone will find it useful :)

The Coding Monkeys do not create the localizations. Willing users do.
If there is no willing user for a particular language, then it might
never come. When a language has been created it is distributed
separately under the Files section of the Yahoo Group. This imho
pretty unfortunate way of distributing localizations currently only
has Dutch and Danish for version 2.5.x.

If you feel you could do the localization yourself, then you could
offer that to Martin Pittenauer of the Coding Monkeys. I did just
that for Dutch.

old text editor.  We collaborate b/w all the people involved in the
project, mark-up on the fly before moving copy into packaging,
quickstart guides, etc.  I'm wondering if there's something like the
equivalent of templates, or Text Wrangler's Stationary?

Well, the first things you would need are:

1. XCode installed. You can download the latest version of the Apple
developer tools via:
      http://developer.apple.com/fr/

      The account is free. Alternatively you could install the version
that came with your Mac. I always choose to install the devkits for
older versions of Mac OS X as well to stay compatible

2. A localization tool. I use iLocalize ($39, http://www.arizona-
software.ch/applications/ilocalize), because I like it far better
than alternatives such as the free suite LocSuite (http://www.blue-
tec.com/locsuite/). This a matter of preference. You will need to get
accustomed to any tool. iLocalize can be downloaded as well as a
trial version.

3. A talk with TheCodingMonkeys, Martin Pittenauer, if they are
interested in your work in case you want to share it. I always do
this when I'm done and satisfied with the end-result. I also
localized lots of apps that I keep for myself, because I'm not
satisfied with the result or not willing to support updates. Not
every developer is willing to include a localization.
TheCodingMonkeys are one of them, and they keep the localizations
separate from the app in the Yahoo Group.

In iLocalize, choose File>New Project. Select the SubEthaEdit.app as
your source, choose English as base language (or reference language),
and select no other languages. After creating the project choose
Project>Add Language and add French. As a helper you could add Apple
created glossaries for French in iLocalize. Find them via the Help
menu of iLocalize. After you have copied the French dmg, you can drag
the glossary files onto the Manage Glossaries window of iLocalize
under the Glossary menu to the Global directory. After you have the
Apple glossaries available you can use them with the Glossary
Inspector from the Window menu. iLocalize comes with a tutorial and
fine help pages.

After you are done localizing 1119 strings, 89 HTML files, one
ReleaseNotes.txt, you can generate the app and run it from the
Application menu. You can do that intermediately as well too. Some
strings are too big for the standard SubEthaEdit gui, others too
small. Adjust this using Interface Builder (IB) on the nib files.
Double click within iLocalize will do, to start IB.  When you're
completely done, export the project from the Project menu and it send
to TheCodingMonkeys for upload to the files section of the Yahoo group.

Localizing is a lot of work for the first version, especially if it
is your first experience. The first version usually takes me two
weeks or so. Most time goes into the html. Take your time, be
critical to yourself, the learning curve may be steep. The good news
is that updates are usually a breeze. Take those into account as
well, because if you are going to share your work you want it to look
good in this version, but you have to be prepared to keep it up to
date too. A localization is only valid for one version of the
application!

I did a check: Based on the French glossaries from Apple in
iLocalize, you can auto-translate 38% of the strings SubEthaEdit,
leaving you 718 strings, 89 html files, release notes and Interface
Builder stuff.

The encoding doctor comes up you if ty to convert a text to an
encoding that can't represent all of its characters. (E.g. a text
that contains umlauts "öüä" that is told to convert to "Western
(ASCII)"). It gives you the chance to either convert those characters
in a lossy fashion if possible (e.g. umlauts lose their diacritic
mark, aka the dots) or lets you fix the problems manually and try to
convert again.

that says "all open documents". Is any such feature planned?

Another killer feature on my list would be to point to a directory,
with or without its subdirectories, and do a search and/or replace on
all files that match a particular file filter. E.g. *.html, *.htm.
Currently Rosync oXygen has such a feature. It also adds the option
to create .bak files of affected files just in case you replaced a
little too wildly. Is any such feature planned?

So, I've found how to customize the toolbar. And now, I want to add a
save button, but I can't find the save button in the list of available
icons.

Is this not possible? Or, am I just not doing it correctly?

Yes. I hope we will come up with a bit more elegant solution than
creating ".bak" files though... ;)

Usually Cocoa Applications tend to not have save buttons in the
toolbar. There might even be a human interface guideline advising
against it, if I remember correctly.

However I attached two files you can place in your "Library/
Application Support/SubEthaEdit/Scripts" Folder. After a "Reload
Scripts" in the script menu, or an application restart a save button
should show up in the toolbar customization dialog.

SEE icons are appearing in many places on my computer (MBP 2.33 Ghz) - this has
happened
before with a previous installation too. Files (including preferences...) that
belong to other
programs are getting the SEE icon attached to them. Is there a fix for this?

Mac OS X associates the newest application on the system capable of
editing files with files that have no preference for "Open With:".

The fix is to associate the files in question with an application
explicitly:
Select a file in Finder, press Command-I, choose the application in
"Open With:" and click "Change All".

That's a purely cosmetical concern, if I understand correctly?

The problem is that SubEthaEdit is capable of editing .plist files,
tells the Finder so and automatically gets assigned. Indeed you can't
go back to being unable to edit .plist files and therefore having a
blank icon.

If this is a heartfelt issue, please contact me at
monkeys@... and I will send you a personal build of
SubEthaEdit that doesn't tell the Finder that it's capable of
editing .plist files...

Hi,

One of the cool features I've recently come to appreciate in a few of
the editors I work in is syntax folding. The ability to fold stuff like:

foreach a $l {
       # lots of lines
       # lots of lines
}

to

foreach a $l { ...

Is just great for getting a good view on large documents with code.
Any such feature planned/possible for SubEthaEdit?

Is there a simple way to add a time stamp to a document.  It would be really
nice to have a
timestamp icon that could be added to the toolbar.

Is there any plan to support projects in SubEthaEdit?  This is
probably the only thing keeping me from using it as my primary editor.

It would very handy to be able to search my SEE files with Spotlight directly
instead of using
a separate file content search tool.
