John,
The Sumo11 board without the expansion bares NO resemblance to a
Handyboard. The Handyboard has to have external memory to work, the
single Sumo11 board uses only internal chip memory. IC 4 cannot be
used on the single board.
The design was specific, I wanted a board that could be baught for
reasonably cheap and work as a stand alone. But I also wanted a board
that was versital and capable of doing a lot more so I designed it to
be expanded into the extremely popular Handyboard yet in a compact
size. The requirements were to build an HC11 controller that would be
interchangable with the MaarkIII robot platform, so I also designed it
to be able to accept the MarkIII expansion that already exists. It was
not an easy task, the MarkIII expansion was designed to work with a
PIC processor, I had to go to so pretty great extremes to ensure that
it was compatable with that expansion, but also be able to work good
with my Handyboard expansion. With my HB expansion you will get full
handyboard compatibility and you will also have some of the features
that the Handyboard's expansion board offers such as servo outputs.
Anyway, to answer you question, no you cannot use any version of IC
on the single Sumo11 board.
-Dan Gates

Dan,

I believe that the latest versions of IC (4.21) assume that you
are using an expansion board but on earlier versions one
had do download extra files to use the expansion board.
Would it be possible to use one of these earlier versions
to program the Sumo11 as it is now without the expansion
board? Are the ports used by the Sumo11 arranged as they
are on the HandyBoard?

Thanks,
John Edwards

I just uploaded a bunch of different programs for communicating with
the HC11. My favorite is still PCBug11, I've used it for years. It
seems like robotics is still behind the times, no one has made a
freeware program yet that will work good on XP and faster machines.
Computers are advancing too fast for us hobby robotisists to keep up.

I've been at school all day, so I haven't been able to keep up with
this thread. Here are my findings so far.

My computer: Pentium II - 500Mhz PC running windows 98SE
      Result: PCBug works fine consistantly

Wifes Computer: Celleron - 300MHz PC running Win 98SE
         Result: PCBug works fine consistantly

School Computer #1: 300MHz PC running Windows ME
Result: PCBug works fine but only tried once

School Comp #2: 800MHZ machne running Win ME
Result: PCBug worked once, failed once due to incorrect jumper
accros button, fixed it and it worked fine once more.
I plan to test on this maching again over the next
                 couple of days.

School Comp#3: 1.2Gig Laptop running XP
        Result: PCBug chokes every time

My conclusion is that higher frequency machines seem to be unstable
with PCBug11, and XP as we all know still has severe issues that MS
refuses to resolve.

If you got it working and have the software, then please upload it
here so its in one place... assuming it is freeware or shareware,
etc.

As a matter of fact, it would also be nice if you leave an address
for the software when you mention it, in the very least.

Thanks,

Allen,

Glad to hear of your progress. Tomorrow I'll finish up putting on the motor driver chips now that I know I didn't make a mistake in my board and then try loading mtr_test.s19.

By the way, it looks like we are practically neighbors. I live in S. Johnson City, TN

Good news. One of the other fellows mentioned HCload. I finally figured out how to use it and the darn thing worked. I loaded the mtr_test.s19 and the lights went crazy blinking.
If a person had an old pentium or 486 pcbug would probably work better but this HCload seems to work fine. You might want to try it

I am having a similar problem. The only PCbug I can get to work on my machine is version 3.24a. When I hook to the board I get a communication error I have been in communication with Dan for the past few days. I have gone over the board checked continuity and voltages and everything seems to be ok, but won't communicate. I sent Dan pictures of both sides of the board and he says it looks ok to him. I am running a 1GHZ machine I am wondering if this might be the problem. I am at a stand still. This one has got me. I use two OOPics and two pics on this com port to program them and have no problem at all. I may be overlooking somthing on the board but I have not given up. Dan has several of these working so I know they will work.
I just can't get mine to work.

Yup. My #1 machine is running XP at 2.7GHz, so I definitely can't
use PCBug. :-D

PCBug was written a LONG time ago when machines were primitive and
slow.

BTW: JBug11 does not work with the Sumo11. I've spent enough hours
trying to get it to work to be sure. It does not.

Thanks for the tip on HCload, I gave it a try and it worked perfect. This pcbug has about made me take the board apart. Pcbul likes extremely slow computers it don't like these gig plus machines. HCload is strange for me to learn how it worked but once I figured it out it worked like a top.

Yup. Even the 'a' version of PCBug11 won't work on a machine that

maximum.

Allen and other members with communication problems,

Ok, here is a rundown of what I discovered after banging my
head against my computer screen for the last two days and
not being able to get the Sumo11 board to talk to my PC
using PCbug11.

Case 1:  Pentium 4 - 1.7 GHz PC running Windows ME
Result  PCbug11 would crash with a runtime
                 error message.

Case 2:  Pentium II 400 MHz PC running Windows 98
Result  PCbug11 would run but when trying to
communicate with the Sumo11 board it would
get numerous communication errors an end up
                 saying " Communication Failure "

Case 3:  AMD 266 MHz laptop running Windows 98
Result  PCbug11 runs, Sumo11 board connects
                 and communicates with no problems

                Conclusions:
                  1. Trust my own work !!!
                  2. PCbug11 does not like fast computers.

Now that this is solved, I can go on to assembly stage three.
                                 Thank Goodness!

Hello Dan,

I thought I would bring this discussion over to this list so that more could benefit when we work out my problem.
Yesterday I told you that I was getting a runtime error when trying to run PCbug11. That problem went away when I used a Windows 98 computer instead of the Windows ME unit I had originally tried it on. I guess PCbug11 doesn't like windows ME either.

Having got past that, I connected the Sumo 11 board to my serial port com1, connected the battery and turned on power to the board. The red low battery LED came on momentarily and then went off as it should. I then followed step by step the sequence for establishing communications and when I get to the final PCbug11 screen, I get a series of communication errors and finally it says General Communications Failure. I have checked for solder bridges and I was very careful in placing correct components in the correct location with the correct orientation. Where should I go from here?

Now I am confused. Looking at the pictures on the WEB the jumper
is shown to be upward diagonally left to right. Is that not the
correct orientation? It is what the text seems to describe. Has the
picture been updated or am I as clueless as my kids seem to think I
am? :-)

Is there a file that lists the errata to the WEB site or is this
the only one?

   Has someone started a FAQ?

   Thanks,
Phil

PCBug11 won't work on any machine faster than about 200MHz. Karl
Lunt's modified version is probably good to 250+MHz or so.
http://www.seanet.com/~karllunt/pcbug11.htm

I have an old Pentium 166 running Win98SE and neither PCBug11
version will work on it.

I've been using HCLoad to load programs, but it's kinda weird and
doesn't always work right either. Near as I can tell, it chokes on
any org to RAM in your program.
http://pages.infinit.net/hc1x/68hc11/HCload/hcload.htm

I'm tinkering with writing my own loader, but don't expect any
results from that anytime soon unless I become unemployed for a
while (not likely).

Did you jumper the Program switch correctly? The photos on Dan's
Sumo11 web pages are incorrect. The text describing how to do it has
been updated tho.

You have to jumper diagonally across the two pads that actually
connect to traces. Look on the underside of the board and you'll see
what I mean. Jumper it as the photos show and it'll NEVER work.

John
I am using Windows 98SE, I seem to have less problems with it when it comes to programing OOPic's and PIC's.
Dan also suggested using it with the PCBug11 program there seems to be some issues with it and XP. Most likely due to it being in DOS.

Allen,

You posted over on the MiniSumoMarkIII list that you got yours together but can't get it to communicate with PC. What operating system are you running ?  Windows XT has some known idiosyncrasies in dealing with its com ports. If you are running XT, try running it on a non XT unit.
