Thanks. I just thought last night that the manual made no reference to
recharageable batteries, and I didn't want to chase stupid user
mistakes with a DMM and a soldering iron.

So tonight I went back with the soldering iron (brute force approach
to debugging), and I couldn't see any obvious faults, so I removes the
ICs and reheated all the soldering joints. I didn't notice any missing
soldering joints, or solder bridges, but I was suspicious of a couple
of IC pins, that I may have over bent the during the original
assembly, so I gently straightened them and reseated the ICs. After
doing this, my Sumovore strung to life with all the usual sanity.

I was also very glad my DMM had a simple frequency counter because I
was having a hard time setting the 555 timer to 38 kHz blindly. But
once tuned, it seems to be almost too sensitive, easily getting flase
triggers from itself (IR directly from the IR diodes).

Thank you.

Is the Sumovore behaviour well-defined if you use 1.2 volt rechargeable AA cells, such as NiCad or NiMH rather than disposible 1.5V AA cells? That would mean...

Glad to hear things are working for you. You can "de-tune" the frequency slightly away from 38kHz to make the sensors less sensitive - I also found the...

To follow up what Bob Cook has already said, use the discreet brainboard for power troubleshooting. The discreet board is resilient and forgiving of power...
