Attached are 2 photos from the Wed 3/21 Computer Club presentation of Windows Vista by Zach Fox of  Susquehanna Computer Innovations (SCI).

He demonstrated some of the features, and discussed the different versions.

To the best of my recollection (and don't hold me to this), I think he said:
  • For home users, the 2nd version "up", the "Home Premium" -- might be appropriate.
  • He said the cheapest version, "Home Basic", lacked many of the desirable features.
  • The 3rd version up, "Business Edition" which he had on his demonstration laptop, I think he said was necessary for some networking which he did, but not necessary for most home users.

Other Comments

Interestingly, Zach used to work previously at Chilitech, where our December presenter Matt Hoppes works.  If you recall, Matt had switched from Mac to Windows, and was using a Mac to run Windows at the December meeting, to demonstrate Windows anti-virus programs.   Zach, on the other hand, switched from Mac to Windows when he left Chilitech and started working for SCI.  So both of our last two presenters have had extensive experience with both platforms.

Although a lot of Susquehanna Computer Innovation's  services are aimed toward small businesses, Zach said that they do sell and service computers to home users like us.

I asked Zach what their computers start at price-wise, and  he said laptops start around $600 and up, and desktops start at somewhere around $750 and up.  They custom-build their desktops, which is why the price tends to be higher.

If you contact them, be sure and ask about the "SeniorNet Discount".   Actually, they don't presently have a SeniorNet discount, but if enough people ask about it, it might get them to thinking about it :)  .
