SeniorNet's [SeniorNet] Listserver email network.
This message is sent to all subscribers upon
joining, and periodically thereafter to the entire list. If this
message hasn't been updated since the last time you read it, feel free
to move on to the next post.
If you're new to the group or want a quick
refresher on how this email group works, please read on! This message
contains essential knowledge for all members and will answer MANY
common new-user questions, so please take the time to read it through.
If you have any questions about any
of the below information
please telephone me using the contact info
at the end of this message.
Setting up some of the operations described
below may require you to CONSULT with someone familiar with them; going
into all the necessary details is beyond the scope of this document.
This file is being automatically sent to you
by the Yahoo eGroup Listserver because you
have joined -- or else a moderator has added your name to the group --
or else the Listserver is sending an automatic monthly 'reminder'
message.
------------------------------------------
WHAT'S A LISTSERVER??
A Listserver (aka Yahoo eGroup) works
similar to a newspaper.
When an announcment is sent,
the Listserver automatically distributes it
to all 'subscribers'.
This Listserver sends email announcements
for local SeniorNet events --
classes, Computer Club workshops, and annual meetings.
It's an ideal system, because:
it's FREE to both announcers and readers
People can SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE
themselves as they wish
Thus NOBODY should be receiving
announcements that does not want them.
It automatically creates a 'web
archive page' of each announcement, that can be viewed by ANYBODY
from any browser from any computer anywhere.
.
IDENTIFICATION -- The Listserver
automatically adds the 'subject tag' [SeniorNet] at
the beginning of the subject line, so you will know the message came
to you via the Listserver.
== 2. AUTOMATIC MESSAGE
SORTING
We recommend you consider creating a
separate email mailbox named 'SeniorNetEgroup' or similar. Then use
your email program to create a 'Rule' (sometimes called 'filter')
that will automatically sort any incoming messages with 'Subject Tag'
of '[SeniorNet]' into the 'SeniorNetEgroup' mailbox.
All email programs have this filtering
capability. Setting up this Rule will prevent Inbox clutter
from Listserver messages accumulating in your Inbox.
== 3. UNSUBSCRIBING
You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any time
you no longer want to receive announcements
from this Listserver.
You simply send a blank email (no
subject, no body)
Then just hit the 'Reply' button in
response to the confirmation request that Yahoo will send you.
Be sure you send this request using your
NEW address, because the Listserver performs the requested action for
whatever email address you are using.
This 'subscribe address'
will also be in the 'Moderators Notes
at the bottom of every email
you receive from the Listserver.
Please try to do this 'resubscribing'
process yourself. It's not that difficult.
If you and all other members
with changing addresses wait for a volunteer to do this task for you,
then they have to stop what they are doing, to do this task for you.
------------------------------------------
Options (If you belong to more than 1 Yahoo
group)
Alternate Method 1: Yahoo ID
-- Note that if you belong to multiple Yahoo
groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo,
rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several groups.
To do this, you first need to get a 'Yahoo
ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address using your Yahoo
'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Gmail Address --
Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google (Gmail.com),
and subscribe it to any Yahoo groups you
belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail address to your
actual address.
Then if your actual address changes,
you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and all your
Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is NOT
recommended.

LISTSERVER INFORMATION
ANNOUNCE ONLY --
This group is set up to be 'announce only',
so only 'approved announcers' can post
announcements.

MESSAGE ARCHIVES --
The Yahoo Listserver automatically stores an
'archive copy' of every announcement sent in the "Message Archives",
which you can browse by going to the 'Listserver Home Page'
The attached 2 photos show SeniorNet volunteer instructor John Beirne (sitting at computer holding mouse), hard at work during the SeniorNet iPod workshop, held last Thursday, and concluding this Thursday evening, which was available to current SeniorNet members.
John's syllabus started right off with the technically-challenging question "Who's the funny guy with a beard and suspenders, Santa Clause?", and went from there to "Learning is like being outside on a sunny warm fall day, if we can relax and enjoy it we can have a wonderful time", and then progressed on to the main topic, the "ins and outs" of iPods and other portable audio players.
The Next Workshop
Don't forget, the next scheduled workshop for Susquehanna SeniorNet members (and the last one for this year) is the "Holiday Letters" workshop, 2 sessions starting Wed Nov 18 at 10:15 (registration required -- see the Susquehanna SeniorNet Schedule Page Paragraph 3 for details.)
This workshop will include page and text formatting, inserting photos, and several other kinds of graphics and working with preprinted stationary. A manual is included.
Registration:
This workshop is $10 for current SeniorNet members. Advance registration is requested 1 week in advance -- in order to print your copy of the manual, and to reserve your seat at one of the 10 computer workstations (by calling the Library 326-0536 by Nov 11, and tell them you want to take the SeniorNet Holiday Letters workshop).
Learn to use iPods to get the most out of them. The course covers setting up the hardware (the iPod itself) and the software (which is on your computer) and its use on both Mac and PC platforms. You don't have to own an iPod to take this course. If you are interested in purchasing any kind of music player, this workshop will help. We will cover how to hook up the devices, what it can be used for (music, books, lectures -- and for many models of players, also photos, and videos. Also dicussed will be how to find content legally.
Registration:
This workshop is $10 for current SeniorNet members. Advance registration is recommended 1 week in advance -- in order to reserve your seat at one of the 10 computer workstations (by calling the Library 326-0536 by Nov 5, and tell them you want to take the SeniorNet iPod workshop).

Options (If you belong to more than 1 Yahoo
group)
Alternate Method 1: Yahoo
ID -- Note that if you belong to
multiple Yahoo groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo,
rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several
groups.
To do this, you first need to get a
'Yahoo ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address
using your Yahoo 'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this
process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Gmail Address
-- Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google
(Gmail.com), and subscribe it to any
Yahoo groups you belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail
address to your actual address.
Then if your actual address
changes, you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and
all your Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new
address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is
NOT recommended.

== eBranch Overview by Doug Loss ==
The eBranch is an entirely online library branch that is available to any Lycoming County resident from any internet-connected computer.
It has all kinds of "good stuff" that you probably never even imagined.
The eBranch website is divided into five sections: Get it NOW, Ask it NOW, LEARN it NOW, for KIDS NOW, and Look it UP NOW.
Get it NOW is your jumping off point for signing up for a library card, for downloading audiobooks to listen to on your computer or MP3 player, for downloading ebooks to read on your computer, and for downloading music, videos, and news.
Ask it NOW lets you connect with a live tutor for help with student's homework seven days a week from 3 PM to 10 PM. We have Ferguson's Career Guidance Center here, which gives you information on over 3300 different jobs and tutorials on looking for, finding, getting, and holding the job you want.
LEARN it NOW provides the Auto Repair Reference Center, with instructions on how to do many repairs to your vehicle. Learning Express Library provides tutorials and sample tests for many different things. Learn a Language has many different courses to help you learn another language.
For KIDS NOW has online animated audio story books for the younger kids. There's a section for the preschool kids too. For teens, there are many links to help improve their writing skills, to suggest interesting reading, and to let them interact with other teens from around the world.
Look it UP NOW has everything else we couldn't fit under one of the first four categories. Select "Online Resources (Subjects)" and you can see and browse through all the different areas, from health to legal to business to education. Intuit's TurboTax gives you an easy way to calculate your income taxes.

Well, I'll be talking about the eBranch in total, not just the PowerLibrary stuff. We have a subscription to Morningstar, but to use it you have to start at the eBranch website (http://www.lycolibrary.org).
Once on the main page, click on "Look it up NOW," then select "Business Information" under "Find it Fast search by Subject." Morningstar Investment Research Center is the second link under the "Online Resources" section. You'll need to use your library card number or an ecard account to log in.

Alternate Method 1: Yahoo
ID -- Note that if you belong to
multiple Yahoo groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo,
rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several
groups.
To do this, you first need to get a
'Yahoo ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address
using your Yahoo 'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this
process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Gmail Address
-- Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google
(Gmail.com), and subscribe it to any
Yahoo groups you belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail
address to your actual address.
Then if your actual address
changes, you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and
all your Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new
address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is
NOT recommended.

• The cost to repeat a class is only $12.50. Members are encouraged to repeat classes as often as they like.
• You need to pay a one-time SeniorNet membership fee of $40 to take the classes.
The attached photo shows the group from the Feb 10 Computer Club presentation on Intuit's TurboTax.
This group could probably best be described as an "intimate" group.
But once again Jeff Breon -- the presenter -- demonstrated his ability to both clearly present complicated information , AND make it interesting.
Susquehanna SeniorNet wishes to Thank Jeff for taking time out of his busy personal schedule to organize this presentation, and regrets we did not have more attenders to benefit from all his efforts.
Network Challenges ~~~~~~
Jeff was additionally challenged by the Library's "hit and miss" internet connection -- which when used with an encryped web page (the https: secure connection type), causes you to be completely disconnected from the TurboTax page. This situation resulted in Jeff having to re-login about four different times.
{{Jeff noted that with an non-encrypted web page, you have the option to just sit there and stare at the "spinning wheel", and wait until the data starts flowing again. But with an encrypted connection, the connection "times out", and you completely lose your connection -- which is what was happening with the TurboTax web page. Rudy Wacek remarked, "Now you can see what we have to put up with every week, when we're trying to conduct the Internet Class".}}
Note that if you're running this program on your own computer at home, you should not encounter these network problems.
Different TurboTax Versions Available ~~~~~~
Jeff demonstrated the free version of Intuit's TurboTax, that you can run right from their website. All the data is stored on Intuit's computers. Jeff noted that the free version does NOT do the Pa state tax, but you can use the Pennsylvania Government's tax page to do the state tax, as long as your return is not too complicated. Jeff also demonstrated this Pennsylvania page.
Intuit also offers several upgrade versions at varying costs. Jeff said there is a $30 version gives you the same results, but has a slightly more straight-forward interface. But Jeff noted that the free version gives the same results. Jeff also said there is a $15 version, that is almost the same as the free version, but also calculates your percentage odds of being audited.
Jeff WARNED US that once you click the button to use any of the "paid" versions, you can never go backward to the free version. I.e. your data is forever trapped in the paid version. He said, for this reason, to be very cautious about selecting any of the options, that cause you to be "upgraded" to a paid version.
The Deluxe Version ~~~~~~
Jeff also noted there is also a $90 version which will do the Pa state taxes. Someone with a lot of stock transactions might want this version. For someone with a lot of stocks, there is an option to automatically download data from your stock brokers directly to Intuit, which saves you the trouble of typing-in all the stock data manually. (I think this version comes in a box, on a CD, and you install it on your computer, rather than running from the web page.)
Rudy Wacek mentioned that he had obtained the $90 version, but not for $90. He said he did some searching on the Internet, and using the PriceGrabber.com "shopping bot", he was able to find it for about $50 -- far lower than at any of the "brick and mortar" stores, or other online sources, that he also had checked.

Kirk Condyles for The New York Times
Flora Schmidt, right, is gaining computer skills at the SeniorNet center in Huntington, N.Y. At left is Slava Vero, a coordinator of the program.
By TANYA MOHN
Published: November 29, 2008
NEVER-ENDING bad news about layoffs and unemployment has been sobering for job seekers like Flora Schmidt of Mineola, N.Y. But Ms. Schmidt, who is 73, faces an additional hurdle in landing a part-time job: a lack of computer skills. “If you want to do anything in the workplace, you must know computers,” she said.
Kristin Fabos, executive director of SeniorNet, a nonprofit group, says that “more and more seniors are needing to return to work and finding they may not have the computer skills they need.” Her group has more than 130 volunteer-run computer learning centers in 33 states and offers more than 30 courses, in subjects ranging from computer basics and the Internet to word-processing programs and advanced classes like Excel for spreadsheets and PowerPoint.
“Demand is great, as technology is growing so fast,” said Slava Vero, co-coordinator of the SeniorNet center in Huntington, N.Y. She says the center has a waiting list.
Ms. Schmidt has completed several introductory and Internet courses at the Huntington center and is taking a class on Windows. She worked 30 years as a registered nurse and hopes her new computer skills will help land a nursing paralegal job. “I’m determined,” said Ms. Schmidt, who put two sons through college and says she needs a part-time job to make ends meet.
The percentage of older Americans who use computers is rising sharply but is still much lower than that of the general population. From March 2000 to August 2008, computer use among adults 65 and older almost doubled, to 38 percent, according to data from the Internet and American Life Project of the Pew Research Center. That compares with 74 percent of 50- to 64-year-olds and 86 percent of 30- to 49-year-olds.
Susannah Fox, an associate director for the project, says that technologically savvy baby boomers are swelling the percentage of the 65-plus age group, but that factors like income and education remain significant barriers to accessibility. And for some older adults, the use of computers just wasn’t relevant to their previous careers.
A number of organizations are working to close this digital divide. Most community colleges have technology programs geared to older job seekers. SeniorNet awards scholarships and recently established centers in underserved urban and Native American communities. Last year, it introduced online instruction. Some centers, like the Huntington SeniorNet center, plan to offer instruction to homebound older adults via Webcam and to donate recycled computers for students to use.
Last year, the AARP Foundation started WorkSearch, a program for low- to moderate-income older adults that provides skills assessment, training and related employment services. The program, offered free or at low cost, has 75 sites and has courses online.
Mary Kohl, 50, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, learned about WorkSearch when she filed for disaster unemployment benefits. She ran a day care business from her home, but when it was badly damaged from flooding this summer, she had to close it. She had some computer skills, but not enough to land a good job.
“I wasn’t proficient. Things have changed so much, I need to update my skills,” said Ms. Kohl, who is taking a series of eight classes over four months — including Windows XP basic and advanced topics like Quicken.
Emily Allen, the foundation’s assistant national director of work-force programs, says computer basics are essential even before landing a job. “More and more companies require filing an application online,” she said. Participants learn how to write a résumé on the computer and do online job searches, she said.
Mimi Witcher, 65, of Carrollton, Tex., says she knows how a lack of computer skills can marginalize people. In the late 1990s, she had been a stay-at-home mom for more than 20 years when she had to go back to work. Her husband had lost his job and the couple had college bills for two daughters. “I was 55 and completely computer-illiterate,” she said. For a few years she worked at a local Barnes & Noble and did temp work. She began taking computer classes at Richland College nearby.
Ms. Witcher did so well that about six months later she was asked to teach other older adults at the college. In addition to teaching at Richland, earlier this year she and her husband opened the Computer School for Seniors, www.cs4seniors.com, which offers more than 100 lesson plans online.
Molly Harrod, a research associate at the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University in Detroit, says feelings of insecurity over computers are common in older adults. Dr. Harrod conducted a yearlong study of a SeniorNet computer lab in the Midwest for her dissertation, “No Senior Left Behind: Creating Older Adult Computer Users.”
Students “often made a point of letting me know how successful they were,” she said. “They’d say things like ‘I have a Ph.D. from Harvard’, or that they owned successful businesses, or they would talk about how successful their adult children are.” Almost all of the students did it, Dr. Harrod added, as if they were saying “I’m not dumb.”
She also found that fear was pervasive — fear, for example, of not being able to learn or of looking stupid. “They felt they would be devalued or stigmatized,” she said, “that they would be left behind in society.”
LEARNING computer skills is empowering, Ms. Witcher said. And even the tech-savvy can upgrade.
Dean Hofer, 72, of Richardson, Tex., used computers as an electrical engineer at Texas Instruments before he retired, but found the Photoshop classes he took with Ms. Witcher to be important tools in enhancing his business Web site. His hand- and custom-made wooden pens, sold online and at craft shows, are “an important part of my income,” Mr. Hofer said.
Ms. Witcher says that tackling the computer can be challenging for people who feel uncomfortable in a high-tech world. “I know exactly how they feel,” she said. “Self-confidence is the biggest issue.”

((Although this article describes one of the "latest" Macs, note that you can get refurbished, good as new Apple Certified Macs from Apple Refurbished Store currently starting at $849. This email is being sent using a refurbished Mac that I bought back in 2004.))
What's more Partisan, shrill and exhausting than presidential politics? The eternal conflict between Microsoft and Apple, of course. While the race to the White House will, mercifully, be over soon, the decades-long battle between Macs and PCs--with the negative ads and trash-talking bigwigs--will persist until cockroaches inherit the earth. You think taxes are just a political issue? A few weeks ago, as Apple prepared to launch its new line of laptops, Microsoft execs were on the stump, criticizing what they call the "Apple tax," the premium consumers pay for Macs with the same power and speed as lower-priced PCs.
Market-research firm NPD Group dug into the numbers and determined that, on average, you'll spend up to $800 more on an Apple than you would on a comparable PC laptop. And in most cases, PCs come with more bells and whistles, like Blu-ray drives and more ports for special external hard drives and video connectors. So what kind of sucker would be willing to pay the Apple tax?
I would! Gladly. Where do I sign? After months of reviewing Windows desktops and laptops, I put the new $1,600 MacBook through its paces--and it was like returning from a backward country where nothing works, only to find your homeland is even better than you remembered.
Apple specializes in minimalist design that simply works better. Each MacBook, for instance, is carved out of a single block of aluminum, and this unibody construction creates a stronger, lighter chassis that looks like a work of art.
Likewise, while some of the PC laptops I tried have two separate sets of mice on board--in case you prefer one type over the other--Apple's pointing system has evolved on the new laptops so that the (only) mouse consists of a single glass touch pad. Push the entire pad down to click, or configure it so a double tap does the same job.
Cooler yet is the touch pad's iPhone-like gesture system. Drag one to four fingers across the surface to perform a variety of tasks--move your cursor, zoom, scroll through documents, even navigate among alternate desktops you can create on your machine.
Plus, with the Apple tax comes peace of mind. A major virtue of Steve Jobs' control-freak ways is that if something goes wrong with your computer, you know whom to blame. You call Apple or go to the Genius Bar at an Apple store. End of problem. With a PC, though, you have to try to figure out if you've got a hardware problem or a software problem. Invariably, you will be wrong, and the Microsoft-support rep will refer you to the PC manufacturer. Or vice versa. Repeat.
The best MacBook feature, however, is the Leopard operating system, which I find so much simpler, more stable and more straightforward than Windows Vista. The only possible argument anyone can make in the latter's favor is that, well, it powers some mighty cheap machines. And so, in summary, just as the political pundits have done lately, I'll paraphrase Oliver Wendell Holmes: taxes are the price we pay for civilized computers.:

A Listserver (aka Yahoo eGroup) works
similar to a newspaper.
When an announcment is sent,
the Listserver automatically distributes
it to all 'subscribers'.
This group sends email announcements for
ballroom, swing, and
sometime singles dance events for the
North Central Pennsylvania area.
It's an ideal system, because:
it's FREE to both announcers and
readers
People can SUBSCRIBE and UNSUBSCRIBE
themselves as they wish
Thus NOBODY should be receiving
announcements that does not want them.
It automatically creates a 'web
archive page' of each announcement, that can be viewed by
ANYBODY from any browser from any computer
anywhere.
.
IDENTIFICATION -- The Listserver
automatically adds the 'subject tag' [SeniorNet] at
the beginning of the subject line, so you will know the message came
to you via the Listserver.
== 2. AUTOMATIC MESSAGE
SORTING
We recommend you consider creating a
separate email mailbox named 'SeniorNetEgroup' or similar. Then
use your email program to create a 'Rule' (sometimes called
'filter') that will automatically sort any incoming
messages with 'Subject Tag' of '[SeniorNet]' into the
'SeniorNetEgroup' mailbox.
All email programs have this filtering
capability. Setting up this Rule will prevent Inbox clutter
from Listserver messages accumulating in your Inbox.
== 3. UNSUBSCRIBING
You can UNSUBSCRIBE from this group any
time
you no longer want to receive
announcements from this Listserver.
You simply send a blank email (no
subject, no body)
Then just hit the 'Reply' button
in response to the confirmation request that Yahoo will send
you.
Be sure you send this request using
your NEW address, because the Listserver performs the requested
action for whatever email address you are using.
This 'subscribe address'
will also be in the 'Moderators Notes
at the bottom of every
email you receive from the Listserver.
Please try to do this 'resubscribing'
process yourself. It's not that difficult.
If you and all other
members with changing addresses wait for a volunteer to do this
task for you, then they have to stop what they are doing, to do
this task for you.

Options (If you belong to more than 1 Yahoo
group)
Alternate Method 1: Yahoo
ID -- Note that if you belong to
multiple Yahoo groups and your email address changes:
You can update the address ONCE in Yahoo,
rather than having to unsubscribe and resubscribe to several
groups.
To do this, you first need to get a
'Yahoo ID', then 'link' it to your actual email address
using your Yahoo 'Profile'. Consult someone familiar with this
process for more info.
Alternate Method 2: Gmail Address
-- Another method is to get a free Gmail address from Google
(Gmail.com), and subscribe it to any
Yahoo groups you belong to. Then you can forward the Gmail
address to your actual address.
Then if your actual address
changes, you just change the forwarding address ONCE in Gmail, and
all your Listserver messages are now forwarded to your new
address.
Hotmail gets bad reviews, and is
NOT recommended.
== 5. ADDITIONAL
LISTSERVER INFORMATION
ANNOUNCE ONLY --
This group is set up to be 'announce
only',
so only 'approved announcers' can post
announcements.
I.e., it is not a discussion
group.
MESSAGE ARCHIVES --
The Yahoo Listserver automatically stores
an 'archive copy' of every announcement sent in the "Message
Archives", which you can browse by going to the
'Listserver
Home Page'
