3. Wed Dec 6, 5:30 to 7:30 pm -- Computer Club,
Connections,Security, VOIP
Matt Hoppes and Evette Hill from ChiliTech
will speak on several topics as follows:
Connections - Type of available
internet connections and relative costs: dial up, telephone DSL, cable
company broadband, Chilitech wireless, Chilitech DSL.
Security - protecting against viruses
and spyware.
VOIP - Digital Voice Voice Over
Internet Protocol (Vonage & similar)
Outlook Express - How to share
address books between multiple accounts. (For
multiple users on the same computer, you can share one address book,
rather than duplicating all your addresses for the 2nd
user.)
Repairs - A brief mention about what
computer repairs Chilitech can do. (We don't think
most of the SeniorNet people are even aware of
this).

Welcome
1. The Good Thing About Listservers
Multiple Announcers - These listservers allow multiple
announcers to send information at NO CHARGE to large numbers of
people, that is hopefully of interest to you.
One Address Book - The many announcers don't have to keep track
of email addresses at all, because the Listserver automatically
keeps the one master address book updated.
Self Subscribe - The Listserver allows new people to subscribe
and unsubscribe themselves whenever they like, and
automatically updates the address book.
Web Page - The Listserver automatically creates an archive web
page, which
gives "web page visibility" for the announcements
provides a backup message location where you can
always find the message if you lose or did not receive your copy in
your email.
2. The Bad Thing About Listservers
We cannot seem to get people trained to do the subscribing
and unsubscribing themselves when they change their email
addresses.
With several Listservers in operation, some with a hundred
or more names,
and with people continually asking us to change their
email addresses in the Listserver;
we find ourselves spending all
our time adding and removing peoples names for
them.
In reality, this is probably always going
to be an UPHILL struggle, as I estimate that probably 99% of computer
users in this North Central Pennsylvania region have little knowledge
about using their computers, other than being barely able to turn them
on and off, and I am guessing that they are not interested in spending
the time to learn or do anything more.
3. The Toilet Paper Analogy
Using an analogy, if the subscribe/unsubscribe functions
are considered to be a tool like toilet paper, then ideally it is the
user's job to use the toilet paper. Therefore, if people keep
asking us to do the subscribing and unsubscribing jobs for them
-- then we feel like we are spending a lot of our lives accomplishing
nothing except doing the digital equivalent of wiping people's rear
ends for them.
4. The Plea
Please try to handle the
unsubscribe (details Para. 5 below) and subscribe (details Para. 6
below) functions yourself, whenever you change your email
address.
When you change to a new email address, please try to
subscribe your new address yourself.
(Unsubscribing your old address is optional, but you may temporarily
get 2 copies during the period your mail provider forwards email from
your old address.)
There are links in the footer of each email sent from each
Listserver,
that allow anybody to unsubscribe or subscribe themselves
at any time.
5. How It Works -
Unsubscribe
Just send a 'blank' email (no subject, no body
necessary)
from the address you want to unsubscribe to
'Listname-UNsubscribe@yahoogroups.com'
(where 'Listname' is the name of the
Listserver)
and then reply to the
'request-for-confirmation' that Yahoo will send
you.
(( Note that whichever
address you send this blank message from,
If you have additional questions, email me your telephone
number,
and I can call you, or email you my cell phone
number.
8. Problem Partially My Fault -
Apologies
This problem is at least partially my fault, as when we
initially subscribe new people to these Listservers, we usually don't
tell them that we request them to handle the unsubscribing and
subscribing in the future when they change their email
address.
However, in my defense, often this
conversation takes place in the middle of a dance or middle of some
other meeting, where the person has neither the time nor interest at
the moment to listen to all the Listserver
details.
9. Volunteers Always Welcome
If you're sitting there thinking to yourself, "Gee,
this job of subscribing and unsubscribing people sounds like a fun way
to spend some time", then please contact us, as we can always use
assistance. Let me assure you, it is very glamorous, satisfying,
and rewarding work.
I recently put a 3 minute video (4.6 Megabytes) on a dance web page, that shows my dance partner Rita Stine
and myself doing a West Coast Swing demonstration dance last September
at the Dupont Fire Hall (over near Wilkes-Barre, Pa).
The attached JPEG
shows a screen capture of the movie's web page.
You should be able to play this video if you have Apple's
Quicktime player
It is saved in "web streaming" format, so if you
have a high speed connection, it should (hopefully) begin playing
almost immediately.
((I made this video using Apple's iMovie6
software on a Macintosh computer. Similar software is available
for Windows computers. The video footage was obtained courtesy
of Sounds Of Music Entertainment.))
What This Means To You
While there's nothing particularly significant about us
old folks doing a more or less beginner-level performance, this
could just as well be a video of YOU dancing . . . or
your model railroad in operation . . . or showing you joyfully
unpacking your new Macintosh or your new Dell computer.
Good For Reviewing Dance Steps??
I have been trying unsuccessfully to get the local dance
instructors to put some of the summaries of their patterns on a
similar web page for review. Stop and think about it
. . . how many times have you gotten home from a dance class, and you
can't quite remember whether the "rock step" or the
"pivot turn" is done on the 5-6 count or done on the 7-8
count. So you end up practicing it wrong.
The instructors typically retort with, "but we don't
want to 'give' our lessons away" by having them on the
web. If that was the case, we could all
be dancing like experts from using mail order videos. My belief is
that many of us can REVIEW a new pattern from a video, but 98% of us
cannot LEARN a new pattern from a video. We have to actually
take the class and be "walked" through it step-by-step by
the instructors about 10 or 20 times.
SUBJECT: The Tue Sept 12 Susquehanna SeniorNet Macintosh
demo at the James V. Brown Library
by Apple Representatives Matt Little and Rusty
Clementoni
Attached should be 4 photos from last night's 'SeniorNet
Computer Club' Presentation of the Windows-capable "Intel
Macintosh".
First, we would like to says THANKS to all those
persons who took the time to attend and support this Macintosh
presentation -- and fill up the seating area.
((Our biggest worry was that we would have a speaker take the time to
come and do a presentation, but only have only a small handful
of attendees, such as we experienced back in 2004 when we tried to
have Macintosh presenters come to Penn College.))
The 1st photo
This photo shows -- standing on the right, with the tie
and yellow shirt) -- Rusty Clementoni . . . the Apple
salesperson who set up this presentation. Standing on the left
(in the dark blue shirt), is Apple engineer Matt Little, who
did most of the presentation.
Matt discussed the 'Boot Camp' software, which allows the
Mac to boot up-in and run Windows XP right at the hardware level just
like it would if it was a real Windows box. Matt also discussed
the 'Parallels' program which allows the Mac to run a
Windows-emulation program, so you can run your Windows programs
simultaneously with Mac programs. He also addressed many
questions from the Mac users in attendance.
The 2nd photo
This photo again shows Matt Little, standing at
right. The gentleman sitting down immediately to Matt's
left (in a dark blue shirt) is Dale Reeder, from Leading
Electronics, whom we requested to attend. Leading
Electronics is our local authorized Apple dealer. They sell and
service both Macs and Windows computers.
The gentleman sitting in the very left edge of the photo
(in a dark blue shirt) is Geoff Knauth, the chairman of the
local Williamsport Mac Meetup group ( mac.meetup.com/25
), that meets here in Williamsport the 2nd Tuesday of every
month. Geoff and his group were obliging enough to relocate
their meeting from their usual normal location at a local coffee house
where they can lounge and sip on a beverage, to our crowded,
non-beveraged library space, so they could help boost our
attendance.
The 3rd photo
This photo again shows Matt Little, standing at
right. The gentleman sitting down immediately to Matt's
left is Mike Dock (in a dark blue shirt), from Northumberland.
The lady in the left edge of the picture is Bonna Cafiso from
Sunbury. We also had a gentleman from Danville, and 3 persons
from the Lock Haven area.
The 4th photo
This photo again shows Matt Little, the only photo where
you get a semi-decent view of his face.
Attendance Speculations
These people from these outlying towns probably learned
about the program from the Central Pa
Mac Users email discussion Listserver. We also had
quite a few Williamsport-area people who are not SeniorNet members.
I am speculating that they might have learned about this program from
Sun-Gazette writer George Gedon's Sunday article headlined
"SeniorNet to look at Windows vs. Mac".
The attendance sheet indicates that only about 7 SeniorNet
members were in attendance: George and Janice Cohen, Art & Jane
Kline, Fred Stiner, Rudy Wacek, and myself. Thus this program
was really not all that heavily attended by actual SeniorNet members.
But with the help of the Mac Meetup group, Mac users from
outlying towns, and the general community, we were able to provide a
reasonably "respectable" audience.
Rusty Clementoni from Apple Computer will
demonstrate and discuss the new
"Intel Macintosh", that can run both
Windows and Macintosh operating systems.
Dont' miss this eye-opening demonstration, that will show
you how you can now use a Macintosh computer to run the same Windows
applications that SeniorNet uses, but you can also start enjoying the
legendary features and reliability of the Macintosh computers, that
your kids have been telling you about for years.
Also, a representative of Leading Electronics, our local
authorized Macintosh dealer, will be present to answer any questions
about purchasing or servicing Macintoshs.

FYI: Survey Results, from 10/13 Dig. Photo. Computer Club
The 2nd attached JPEG (following the photo) shows the
survey results for the October 13 Computer Club meeting,
that featured Wayne Palmer speaking about Digital
Photography.
We had approximately 20 person attending (plus 3 council
members).
We had 16 of the 20 survey forms completed and returned to
us.
Thanks
We THANK those 16 persons who took the time to complete
the survey form and return it.
Why ?
We announce these computer club meetings in up to about 8
different media.
However, those announcements don't just magically appear
in the media.
A volunteer (Margie Shaw with the newsletter, and George
Gedon with the newspapers and TV) has to take the time to a) create
the announcement, b) get it into the format required by the particular
media, and c) make sure it gets to them.
Therefore it is helpful for us to see your answers to the
"How did you learn about this meeting?" section,
to find out if the time spent creating and placing these announcements
in the media, results in many of you actually seeing
them.
Future Topics
We also try to find out if there are topics, that people
want to see for FUTURE presentations. Another volunteer
(currently Art Kline) studies the
"I'd like to see presentations on
<whatever>" section,
to see if he can identify any topics, that the majority of
people seem to be interested in.
Names Format
If you were one of the people attending, you should be
able to find your initials. Your name shows in the format of
"last initial-first initial". For example, if a person
named Samantha Bastian had attended, in our records she would be
Bastian-Samantha, and she would show up in the second column as
"BS".
