Swfit news from Italy   Message List

After a great season, with more Common Swifts than usual for all the people I've interviewed here in Tuscany, and after 15 days of enormous "screming parties", now Common swift in my town are clearly diminishing. Tomorrow only 10-20, last saturday in the morning more than 100 with the same meterological conditions.
Pallid swifs (Apus pallidus) instead they are busy in the beginning of their second breeding effort.
Now, the sky is quite...empty.. :-(
During the last breeding season I've done a map of Common swift/Pallid swift territories, noticing a clear separation among them, with pallid swifts always near a water corp (sea, or canal).
This separation is not usual, as other colonies in Italy are "mixed", with common and pallid togheter
The strangest "pallid" new colony I found was in a 30mt high chimney..so we've got our "chimney swifts" too!! ;-)
The strangest C.S. new colony I found was in an old church where the priest had closed all the holes occupied by pigeons leaving only a small cavity each time...and all this cavities was occupied by swifts! Many thank to the priest (not from pigeons..)
Now it's time to me to visit Torre di Calafuria's pallid swift colony..and its strange painter Mr. Fremura..

Thank you for the welcome.
I know swifts will not dart into the first available hole they see, it may take years for them to nest in the boxes i have put up....if at all. I was encouraged when we had 1 swift land on the roof, and another land on the gutter,  also several close passes.   Since then we have had almost nothing. I still remain optimistic, and keep playing the CD.
One qick quetion about the group ....i cannot see the messages i have posted, is there a reason for this  (im a noob, i know)

Unlike the way they fly, Patience is the key word when it comes to getting into a new nest.

Swifts are not in a rush to enter into new holes as they know well it's a one time chance.

Hi all.
Im am new to groups and new to helping swifts.
Like all of you, I am keen to help these wonderful birds out the best way that i can. I have had loads of practical help from Edward Mayer, so many thanx for that.
At the moment I have 6 nest boxes up, but as yet non occupied. It is still early to expect them all to be occupied i know, but am keeping my fingers crossed. The boxes have only been there a little over a week. Have had a few close fly bys, but not hitting as yet. I am playing the CD of swift calls everyday, but continuasly, as im trying not to annoy the beighbours.
I will keep you updated on any further developments.

Ps....i dont think the Sparrowhawk perched on our chimney helped matters.

Giorgio, thank you for the report from Italy. Nikos from Cyprus just reported also that the CS have left the island. The early brood in my balcony is preparing...
