Hi,
October Explore the stars is this weekend.
This is the last one of the season.
The forecast looks quite good for both nights.
Oct. 16 and 17
Special thanks to Christopher Go for giving the September talk.
We still have space available and do need more people to set up.
I am expecting a pretty large crowd.
We will have a Pot Luck around 5:30 pm Sat.
Steve Short will give a laser tour of the sky and I will try to set up live big
screen imaging.

Please contact me if you want to join us.

This is a set that was in my 30D and I guess I just forgot. Might bring some
nice memories for a Harvest Moon weekend.

Buy the time Astronomical Dusk here in SoCal takes place (21:20PDT on the 26th
or 04:20UT on the 27th), Jupiter is about 22 degrees above the horizon and the
transit will be well underway. Indeed Europa will exit the disk a short time
later (about 21:30PDT). However Ganymede does not exit until about 22:00 PDT and
Europa's shadow follows soon there after. So nab it low and early. :)

Enjoy.

That is a relief.  A first glance at Bruce's post made me think all the
campgrounds in the area were closing down.  Sounds like it is still just the one
little one.  Still a shame.

Hi all,
Next week is the August Explore the Stars Program.
We have plenty of space available.
August 14,15
Special thanks to John Garrett for giving the talk at the July program.
I am still looking for a speaker for the August program please contact me if you
are interested.
We had a very nice turn out at the July program.

Auggie has made new Explore the Stars Program Home page.

http://nanzscience.com/explore/index.html

I am also looking for more photos to include both astro and otherwise.

If anyone is interested in coming up Thursday please contact me.

Bob

I am looking for volunteers.

As a volunteer you get free camping and a nice spot to set up.

The program consists of volunteers setting their telescopes at the
Observatory Campground on a Friday and Saturday night for public viewing.
Friday night is an informal program and is usually pretty quiet. Saturday
night starts off with a potluck dinner around 6pm and a talk at the
amphitheater around dusk. After the talk there is public viewing
for a couple of hours.

Please contact me if you are interested in setting up.

There is a group that you can join to receive messages.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/expstars/

For pictures of the campground go to:

http://www.nanzscience.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=12

You do not need to be a member of any group to join in, but you do need to
contact me if you are coming.

We usually get sites 35-40. Site 35 can handle several large trailers.

Thank You

Bob Nanz

Paul and I will be hosting our end of summer star party at Plettstone
this year. This is usually our largest and most popular event of the
year.

Conditions will be favorable for mid week so we will host the event
from Wednesday through Saturday nights (August 19-22).

We will also have a BBQ/potluck on Saturday night and plan to eat at 6
PM. Bring something to share if you like. We will provide the
burgers.

If you intend to come, please observe common star party rules. While
we encourage people to visit Yosemite during the day, this is not a
camping spot for people to visit the park. This is a star party... in
the past, we've had visitors who don't know the difference. Also, if
you don't know the dogs, please do not look at them when you arrive.
Don't pet them until they ask for attention. This is common dog
ettiquette. They bark but don't bite. Don't even ask if you can bring
your own pet. Children are always welcome. Loud parents are not
(sorry to be blunt).

We sometimes invite people from our local community to visit and look
through the scopes. I would personally appreciate your help in
showing them a couple of bright candy objects. Our non-scope-carrying
guests have always been polite and fun to have around.

Please contact me off list to RSVP if you'd like to come. Last year,
we had to limit attendees, so please sign up early. Also, please let
us know well in advance if something comes up and won't be able to
make it. This will help us plan to purchase the food and give us a
chance to let someone else in.

Michelle

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for filling me in about "Jove's Eye," or at least your personal
experience with it.

I'm a few steps beneath a 'newbie' at this. I took some Boy Scouts out to Blair
Valley last month and we mooched some views from the good folks there. But I do
know San Diego County camping like the back of my hand. IMHO, the wonks that
give the weather and often incorrect and more often dealing in generalities.
Yes, there are mountain thunderstorms that occasionally bring rain to the
desert. But keep in mind that rainfall in Little Blair Valley measures
somewhere in the range of 2-3" a year, and most of that in the winter. This time
of year you might get a half hour of light rain all summer. When that happens
it is more likely to be in Sept. than July. I also have some insider
information in that my girlfriend's son was camping at Mataguay, near Warner
Springs, all week and it didn't rain a drop despite many predictions that it
would.

Also, congrats on using the word "sinusoidal" correctly in a sentence ;-).
It's a pleasure to be surrounded (in this group) by educated people, truly!

And, as for your quote about 'big' and 'small' govt.....hell, I'd just like our
country to start acting like a First-World Nation rather than a Third World One.
If countries we consider to be 'less' than ours have health care for all of
their citizens, we should too and if millionaires like Paris Hilton have to go
without another diamond earring for her dog to pay for it, I say that's right
baby!

take care,

Robert Young

I was going to go to Little Blair Valley last night and to some dark sky
observing, but the humidity and call for possible t-storms, stood me off. I am
no that familiar with the ins and outs of the San Diego desert's weather. All is
well that ends well. As it turns out I had been looking for a bargain on a drive
system for a Vixen GP2 mount for quite some time and someone in Corona, about 30
miles east of me, made me an offer I could not refuse. So I spent the gas money
for LBV on the drive system instead. Ok... more than the gas money.

So I was in the backyard still fiddling around this goto thingy (another story
all together) when Jove broke past the trees in the southeastern corner of my
backyard. Using powers in my TV-101 that varied from a moderate 155x, to fairly
absurd like around 272x and 303x, I was mesmerized by all the detail the steady,
calm, humid skies brought. The impact site was stark black against an already
dark brown multi-layered polar region. To me it seemed a bit elongated east to
west. It was just past the meridian so I don't think it was a perspective
effect... I noticed three or four festoons hanging off the SEB. More detail than
I can describe.

Before moving to California my interest in astronomy was sinusoidal, and when
Shoemaker-Levy hit Jupiter in '94 I was in one of the troughs. Hence I never
bothered to get out and see the impacts. :( Therefore I am really glad, courtesy
of some space rock I am not familiar with, I got a second chance.

Kudos to the non-stop imagers of Jupiter for making sure no one missed it!

Hi Jeff,

Fun report, thanks.

I, too, was planning to go to LBV last night, but family visiting from
Houston put a damper on that..

John Hoey tells me that he and his girlfriend were the only inhabitants of
the entire valley last night, and he reports that the evening was quite
pleasant, probably better than average, and that it was shirt-sleeves all
night.

I'm jealous.

Several regular attendees will not be able to come this month so we have lots of
space.
Looks like it is going to be clear and warm.
Please contact me if you want to set up.

Thank You

Bob Nanz

Not sure if this is off topic, but there is a nice Active Region (1024 I
believe) and few nice prominences. Solar fireworks for the 4th....
I'd set 'em up if ya got em...

All of these were taken with a point and shoot Canon 570IS. My 30D is still with
Paul Alsing and trailer. : )

Lots of photos, but a few are worth grabbing. And I know a few you all are
waiting to see!

Many thanks to all the organizers and volunteers for making this year's GSSP

Didn't take a lot of photos this year but here is a link to a few:

Jeff,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts (although that's not ever been a
problem for you ;-) Despite my absence, (I was at both a professional
meeting and a wedding at the same time as GSSP), I was with you in
spirit and am enjoying reading on GSSP and now TAC_South just what my
spirit was doing when it was gone. Glad it was imbibing at Chez-
Gortatowsky Wicks along with the whole crew. I'm a bit insulted you
didn't notice it there but spirits can be a bit flighty.

Sounds like you got the whole gamut of weather from rain to clear sky
and had plenty to do while it was raining.

Looking forward to next year in spirit and body if I can swing it.

Curt

My compliments to the entire committee. I believe we showed that no matter what,
GSSP is the place to be in June for Californians looking for a world class star
party.

Most of my memories are more about people than observing, though the observing
was fine.

Of course Becky and Aaron are not on TAC's but I'll pass along my thanks to them
privately.

I think many will agree the Chez Gortatowsky-Wicks was a fine place to hang out.
We are very proud of our hospitality regardless of conditions. Also as many
know, we avoided any alien abductions Saturday night. No one we are aware of in
our living room / watering hole was abducted or affected by chem-trails. So my
number one memory is of everyone who lounged at Chez Gortatowsky-Wicks. Dan has
better food, we have better libations. You decide. :) Thank you, thank you,
thank you... 2 shows nightly ... try the fish, tip your waitress she works hard.

Driving to GSSP with Debbie... no wonder Paul does not like leaving her home! :)

Friday's rainbow and takin pictures of the the Oney's under it. Ya had to be
there...

Hangin with Jimi, Charlie, Paul, Alvin, Debbie, Susan, Eric, Evan, John, and
Ted... what a great time.

Observing with Debbie... we made the 20 inch sing...

Observing Tuesday night with Jimi doin the driving and Bill Porte supplying the
vehicle... then running over to Paul's 25 to go deeper... Man observing don't
git no better... and Jimi's enthusiasm is contagious. Am I lying Bill?

Handing out door prizes with ROzer...

Pot luck night... that was THE most pot luck of any pot luck I can think of...

Ménage à Trois Red - Folie a Deux - Kim and I were long time member's of Folie
a Deux's wine club, it comes as no surpise to me this fruit forward smooth blend
was a hit.

Pizza at Adin Supply... Pete Santangelli should run for office. Smart don't
begin to describe the man... agree or not, a world class mind.

Eric... a buddy for sure... I drank most of his beer... is there any other
greater sacrifice...?

Paul and Debbie... whats to say? You know.

Thanks to John Hoey and Ted for haulin back the scopes!

Heather and Heather Jr... :)

Sopchek... jeezz we have to stop agreeing!!!

Next year!!! (See ya at CalStar!)

Hi Laszlo,
I don't think it is much darker there than home (It's only 5 min from where I
live).  Plus they close the gates after dark.
Jon.

How dark is out by the reservoir in Diamond Valley? I thought the
Riverside

AS had a public outreach there, maybe there are darker areas there. I'm

about to move out to Hemet, so I'd be interested in what you find out as

well.

I live in Hemet and would like to find a good observing location closer than
Joshua Tree.
Does anyone know any good places to observe near idyllwild, or near Lake Hemet?
I know there are some campgrounds around Lake Hemet but I don't know if there is
much clear sky.
Thanks in advance-
Jon Ruyle.
