The TEXAS Model was developed by the Center for Transportation Research (CTR) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT). The initial development effort started in 1968. The TEXAS Model was originally released in 1977. Several additional projects at CTR added enhancements and new features. The Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provided funding for the development efforts at CTR from 1970-1993. FHWA provided funding for additional enhancements by CTR in 2004-2005 and by Rioux Engineering in 2004-2008.
Dr. Clyde E. Lee was the faculty member who conceived the idea of simulating traffic flow through an intersection. He initiated the first development efforts and supervised several ensuing research projects.
Dr. Thomas W. "Tom" Rioux, a graduate student at the time, became the leader of the team that developed the TEXAS Model.
