RSVP please.  See below.  It greatly helps my planning.  But, _do_ come
if you forgot to RSVP.

ALWAYS BE SURE TO CHECK THE BTIP WEBSITE _&_ MAILING LIST FOR THE LATEST
LAST MINUTE DETAILS & CHANGES, BEFORE COMING TO THE MEETING! :)

DO BRING A VOIP HEADSET, available for $10-30 at most electronics retail
stores, & a laptop computer, so you are able to communicate with the
global BTIP community via VOIP.  It is highly recommended that you have
a voip headset, & not rely on a laptop's built in microphone & speakers,
because the headphones keep the noise level down.  Bringing a headset is
not required, but is a great part of the being able to communicate with
the global community. :)

person meeting in Berkeley, please RSVP to me. Thanks.  It helps my
planning.  Please _do_ come even if you haven't RSVP'd, it's not
required.

Better yet, join the BerkeleyTIP-Global mailing list, send the RSVP
there, & tell us what things you're interested in, or what videos you'll
try to watch - so we can know what videos are popular, & we might watch
them too. :)
http://groups.google.com/group/BerkTIPGlobal

=====  6)  INSTALLFEST
Get help installing & using Free Software, Hardware & Culture.
Laptops only, typically.  There isn't easy access for physically
bringing desktop boxes here.

RSVP _HIGHLY RECOMMENDED_ if you want installfest help.  Please RSVP to
me, Giovanni, at the from address for this announcement, or better, join
& send email to the BTIP-Global mailing list telling us what you'd like
help with.  This way we can be better prepared to help you, & you might
get valuable advice from the mailing list members.

If you are new to using free software, an excellent system would be the
KUbuntu GNU(Linux) software.  It is very comprehensive, fairly easy to
use (similar to Windows or Mac), & suitable for personal, home,
university, or business use.

We are also glad to try to help people with software who join via VOIP.
Please email the mailing list with requests that you want help with, so
we can try to be prepared better to help you.

Installfest volunteers/helpers always welcome, in person, or via VOIP.
:)

=====  7)  ARRIVING FIRST AT THE MEETING:  MAKE A "BerkeleyTIP" SIGN
If you get to the meeting & don't see a "BerkeleyTIP" sign up yet,
please:
1) Make a BTIP sign on an 8x11 paper & put it at your table,
2) Email the mailing list, or join on IRC, & let us know you are there.

Ask someone if you could use their computer for a minute to look
something up, or send an email.  People are usually very friendly &
willing to help.  We can also email you a temporary guest AirBears
account login.

We will have wifi guest accounts available for BTIP attendees.  Be sure
you have wifi capable equipment.  Be Prepared: Bring a multi-outlet
extension power cord.

=====  8)  IRC:  #berkeleytip  on  irc.freenode.net
For help with anything, especially how to get VOIP working, & text
communication.

=====  9)  VOIP FOR GLOBAL MEETING
Speak & listen to everyone globally using VOIP.
Get a headset!  See some VOIP instructions here:
http://sites.google.com/site/berkeleytip/voice-voip-conferencing

===== 10)  VOLUNTEERING, TO DOs
Enjoy doing or learning something(s)?  Help out BTIP in that area.
Website development, mailing list management, video locating, VOIP
server (FreeSwitch, Asterisk) or client (Ekiga, SFLPhone,...), creating
a local meeting.  Join the mailing list & let us know.  Your offers of
free help are always welcome here. :)

=====  11)  MAILING LISTS:  BerkeleyTIP-Global, LocalBerkeley, Announce
Everyone should join the BerkeleyTIP-Global list:
http://groups.google.com/group/BerkTIPGlobal
Say "hi", tell us your interests, & what videos you'll like to watch.

Info on all lists here:
http://sites.google.com/site/berkeleytip/mailing-lists

=====  12)  ANYTHING I FORGOT TO MENTION?
Please join & email the BerkeleyTIP-Global mailing list.

=====  13)  FOR FORWARDING
You are invited to forward this message anywhere it would be
appreciated.
Better yet, use it to create a local meeting.  Invite & get together
with your friends locally, & join in with us all globally. :)

Looking forward to meeting with you in person, or online. :)

You have to edit your sources.list and you can specify what you want to
update in terms of main, contributed etc. You'll probably want main only
since it will be distribution mostly security updates, but its not a good
idea to auto-update if thats what you have planned since its always better
to get an idea of what packages are being updated in case something breaks.

Since it's debian, it should be a matter of editing that file that lists the
repositories, file name escapes me at the moment. I don't remember if the
repositories are broken up into categories such as security, if so then it's
just a matter of commenting out the ones you don't want(?). If not then
you're SoL... Goodluck :)

thanks will try that. I'm not auto updating, its just that twice for the
year using apt-get upgrade has updated apps on my server and reduced
their functionality, so i want to just install security updates, till
its time to go from one lts to another.

I am still concerned about the WINDOWS being DICTATED as the OS. Higher cost is
just one reason ....
I have read of many laptop programs throughout the world e.g. Uruguay, but not
with WINDOWS; recently, I got a mail from the OLPC group about a Laptop
for Teenagers (an upgrade from the Laptop for primary schools),  XO 1.5 or
something similar.
What are the Linux laptops that can be used for this project?

The other question we have ask is, does the public service, as it is right
now, have the trained resources to maintain and administer Linux machines?
If they do have an MS Enterprise license, we can assume they have more than
a few IT personnel with experience in Windows administration.

You can exclude apps with apt/yum/up2date etc too or even specify that
certain packages only be updated from certain alternative repos but that
doesn't really help in preventing package hell.

I've done it for a postgresql installation

eg. https://public.commandprompt.com/projects/pgcore/wiki

An example is kernel updates under RHEL, they are excluded by default but
you can force them if you like.

I am thinking along these lines....
Got these articles from the OLPC newsletter:

dropped a bombshell on the IAEP listserv - he explained OLPC's software

Hi,

Now that the 10.1.1 release for XO-1.5 is out, it's a good time to
talk about OLPC's software strategy for the future. We've got a few
announcements to make:

XO-1:
=====

OLPC wasn't planning to make a Fedora 11 release of the XO-1 OS, but
a group of volunteers including Steven Parrish, Bernie Innocenti,
Paraguay Educa and Daniel Drake stepped up and produced Fedora 11 XO-1
builds that follow the OLPC 10.1.1 work. I'm happy to announce that
we're planning on releasing an OLPC-signed version of that work, and
that this release will happen alongside the next XO-1.5 point release
in the coming weeks.

Uruguay Schools to Pilot Windows XO and MS Office8JUL 2009Uruguay's "El País"
announced on the 7th day of the 7th month that 7 thousand 7th graders will
receive XO computers in Treinta y Tres, Uruguay, running MS Office on Windows.
(English translation via Google)
Windows XO laptops in UruguayThe article stresses that Microsoft and the
Uruguayan Central Education Council (CODICEN, the top authority as to school
policy in Uruguay) will be monitoring closely the experience. This is
interesting news considering that so far Ceibal, run by
the LATU (Technological Laboratories of Uruguay, a government-financed,
semi-independent body) has not shown much interest in monitoring and evaluation,
even though it is indicated this pilot will be also part of Ceibal. The CODICEN
Director, Laura Motta, indicates her concern regarding possible backlash from
defenders of open software, saying that "this is not a general change",
moreover, that for Secondary education it has already been decided to work with
open source software, so as "not to be committed to a single provider".The M&E
process should take up to the end of this school year (late November), and
teacher training was begun this week, the second of the winter school
break in Uruguay. No computers will be provided to the teachers, though "10
will be available in every school library".It is not clear if these XO laptops
were paid for by the Uruguayan government of donated by Microsoft, or whether
they have some hardware enhancement. It is said they are "the same" as those the
Primary school children use already. An interesting "by the way" shared by
another source indicates that there will be no internet connection provided for
this
pilot. http://www.olpcnews.com/countries/uruguay/uruguay_windows_xo_ms_office.h\

IMO, once the right people are involved, Linux would be easier to
administer. Then again, if this project was properly thought out the only
things the laptop would need to run would be an office suite and a web
browser...

In case you meant me and not Carrol, I don't typically use Ubuntu in
production. I'm forced to use RHEL.

If you are a hardcore Python developer looking for some new project work
(or
even possibly a new CIO/CTO position, depending on how good you are), give
me a shout. A guy I know here in the Washington, DC area is looking for
very
talented Python developers, and knowing Django is a serious plus given that
it
is their framework of choice. He's looking for someone who is willing to
put in
serious time, not just regular office hours but Silicon Valley hours, to
help take
his company to the next level.

Briefly, the company is a crowdsourced creative company. They connect
creators with companies seeking media work in a crowsourced fashion. The
company focuses on doing video work as opposed to graphic design types of
projects. However, the person they are hiring would be a direct employee
or
contractor to the company, not a member of their creative community.

E-mail me directly for a bit more information, and I can make the
introduction if
you're seriously interested. He's tapped out his well of resources, so I
figured
I'd put this out to these groups to see if anyone was interested in working
with
this company.

That's all I got.

P.S.: Please don't already work for Google. :)

My 2 cents. In giving laptops to the children, I am making the
assumption that there will be a syllabus. Which would lead to the
children being taught how to use the chosen os. In trinidad windows is
the major os and as a responsible government spending my tax dollars,
they will have to prepare the children for the world of work, which
means windows.

I am not against linux being taught in schools, but it should be taught
as a second os not a first, and preferably done at the level of form 5 - 6.

But are we really teaching them how to use the OS or how to use the computer
and the Internet to achieve competence in a particular study area? If we
make the assumption that there *is* a syllabus then I think this makes my
case stronger.

All they need is an office suite and a web browser to access resources in
the syllabus. For instance, they shouldn't need a specific OS to learn
geography or literature. From an administrative point of view a specialized,
Linux distribution geared towards being an office suite and a web browser
should be both easier and cheaper to implement and maintain.

Children aren't stupid and you would find that some would find ways to get
these laptops to do things they weren't meant to do and we would've
inadvertently spawned a new generation of hackers. These would probably be
more interested in computing related studies later on.

Of course, if we simply want to train the next generation of Windows users
for our currently Windows dependent work-force then Windows is necessary.

Lots of advertisements for IT personnel in ministries these days, almost as
though some spring cleaning is being done. If they don't currently have the
resources then they can put out some more ads and give RHS/DN-leveled
individuals a ten-days.

p.s. While I'm here, +10 Obeahman points to Carroll for reviving a topic I
hoped would remain dead.

India <http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/india> has come up with the world's
cheapest "laptop", a

device
that costs $35 (£23).

India's human resource development minister Kapil Sibal this week unveiled
the low-cost computing device that is designed for students, saying his
department had started talks with global manufacturers to start mass
production.

Louise is a complete stranger. Until 10 minutes ago when I discovered she
was located within a mile of me, I didn't even know of her existence. But
equipped only with a smartphone and an increasingly popular social
networking <http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/socialnetworking> application
called Foursquare <http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/foursquare>, I have
located her to within just a few square metres, accessed her Twitter account
and conducted multiple cross-referenced Google searches using the personal
details I have already managed to accrue about her from her online presence.
